  • Beekeeping is challenging in late summer because we really aren't sure if we should add another super or not. Today, we'll see if the hive can draw out 10 medium super frames in the month of August, after a nectar flow.

I have a similar horizontal hive, and I added a super this year. Just remove the hinged lid, and replace the clear cover with a wood framed queen excluder. If you put one on the left and the right, you can lay the horizontal lid across both supers, and cover the middle with plywood.

A roller works best to only add wax to the rim of the cell, wax in the bottom of the cell is a hindrance.

Hey Dave, the wax that you are usine does not look very clean. how clean should the wax be? thanks.

It is actually very clean. It's from my honey comb capping then I strain it through an old t-shirt. How clean should it be? Never use wax melted from brood comb because it has cocoons in it.

When you showed your Horizontal Hive, and soon after mentioned your Burns Feeding System, I was wondering how you plan to feed them during winter. And as far as using a super, I think Ricky uses hinges that allow easy removal of the top by pulling out the pin. I plan to do that on mine at some point so I can put a super on each end. Of course I'll have to make a temporary cover for the middle. Looking forward to hearing your thoughts.

I like to use the small 2-3" foam rollers for trim work. I also remove the foundation so I can roll to the edge as I've found sometimes they won't draw out to the edge of the wood.

I modify and sell hive tools. I machine a pattern on the handle, typically hexagons or hearts. I laser engrave peoples names on them too. But one of the main modifications I make to all of them is changing that bevel angle. I machine it to change it from about 15 degrees (factory angle) to 4 degrees. Everyone loves how much easier it is to get between the boxes. Thanks for the info David i look forward to watching the follow up.

I added a clean super at the beginning of august and checked it today - they hadn't touched it. But it wasn't a strong hive, they just requeened in July so are building back up again. Thanks for this tip with the wax though, I will apply it to my clean super over the winter sometime, when we have some wax after harvest. It should help get the hive off to a good start next spring.

What if your nectar and pollen flow is insane and never ending? My bees are going insane producing. Over 200lbs in less then a month from 1 hive and going hard still Aug 24. Probably get another couple supers full before having to set them up for winter. Others are splits but growing quickly for next year production.

  • @brogers6672

hi, I split a strong hive about a month ago, the remaining hive was to make a new queen, which I think it should be hatched, mated, and laying by now (?) It has four mediums, with the top one completely full honey and bees brimming on top and front. I'd like to add a super under the fourth one, but worried queen fighting may be going on if they are hatching at this time. Should I worry about this, or just go ahead and add a super. I have one with empty drawn frames. We have a lot of fall flowers in the field coming in soon, unless drought kills them off. Also, the fall flowers tend to produce a honey that can cause dysentery, I read somewhere. Would you be worried about including this fall honey with the wintering hive? Sorry lots of questions, but they're all connected.

New subscriber here from the UK. I'm one of those people with a lot of health issues, but I'm driven to be outside having spent most of my life being around horses. Now I can't have them, my garden helps support my physical and mental well being. If I wasn't allergic to Bees I'd probably have them, but instead I live vicariously watching others who do, and making sure my garden provides for them as much as possible 😁

Learned so much this year from beekeeping. I keep watching your videos David. Got the bees on the flow supers now and each hive has 2 deep brood boxes full. Rescued several hives from downed trees after the storm in town so I've got several hives now and still plan on buying several from you in spring. Hope all is well.

Hello David, new bee keeper here. I am in California and as I'm sure you know we are experiencing a hurricane . I have 2 hives, I strapped the hives so they can't blow apart, is there anything tips you could help me with to help protect the bees? Should I feed them before the storm gets here in case it's a few days before they can fly again? Any ideas would be helpful. I also pounder a fence post along side both of the hives and strapped the hives to the fence posts. Thank you

what part of the country you live will determine if the bees can fill those frames. In southern ontario our bees are still filling the frames. I always add more wax to the frames.

I had actually added a medium last week, because I’d heard when your frames are 70% done then add a box. Which mine were. Because you said your colony must be strong and have fully drawn comb. I went to check if those frames were drawn full now. They weren’t so I removed the medium box and moved the undrawn frames in the deep box to the centre a bit. They were a nuc at the beginning of July. I’ve been feeding them because I wanted them to be big and strong for winter. Alberta Canada. They had started to work in the medium a bit.

I had three year old foundations (Pierco single wax) and lightly brushed some fresh wax on the frames. Aug 1st put on a hive that was a deadout last winter started this spring with a queen cell. The bees are drawing the wax as the cells fill up, maybe four frames with nectar and 3-4 with some wax drawn. I used a wet frame as a primer through a metal excluder to attract the bees into the super.. Just letting the bees do their thing because the brood box is already heavy. My intentions are to get the foundation drawn, not interested in making honey.
