Orpheus sung this song for the first time after I saw the end credits scene - an incredible addition to the change of mood of Hades' court after that moment. Definitely made me tear up.
In the actual legends, after Orpheus lost his wife, he sang in such melancholy that it drove everything to tears to the point in which even inanimate objects would weep, the gods got so tired of his songs but couldn't do anything about it cause his song drove even the happiest among them to tears. When he failed his contract with hades to lead his wife out of the underworld without looking at her, he attempted to commit suicide in order to be with her again but every time he tried to kill himself the methods he took would always lead him to fail, poison would leap from his mouth to avoid being consumed, the rocks he would smash his head upon became soft piles of sand or mud, when he tried to drown himself the water would always push him to shore, knives to his heart would crumble to rust before ever reaching his skin, when he jumped off of cliffs the wind would safely carry him to the ground, the fires he plunged himself in would instantly reduce to cold ashes, the world did not want him to die. He finally died when nymph followers of Dionysus attacked him in a drunk/blind rage because they became increasingly angry that all he would ever sing about was melancholy an anger that overpowered their sorrow. They literally ripped him to shreds and when they were done they realized they had killed perhaps the greatest musician that ever lived and attempted to remove the evidence by throwing his remains in a river along with his lyre.

I remember when I got this game. I opened up the mini art book and saw Orpheus and was so shocked as the tale of Orpheus and Eurydice was my absolute favorite Greek tale. When I got the option to unlock him. I grinded a lot. And then when I encountered Eurydice. I kept going back and forth between the two because I saw the opportunity to bring them back. And the moment I died because I thought to increase the heat really high. I came back and heard Orpheus singing this and I started crying. As I already liked Eurydice's version. But hearing Orpheus sing and have the song have a new meaning with Orpheus. It broke me
thanks to the devs for playing the version with the main vocal line like 15x in the game before finallly giving us this great backing track to sing along to - love, a compulsive harmonizer
How, just HOW can a real-life man sing like he actually IS Orpheus of tragic legend, who sang so sorrowfully women were brought to miscarry and bring about plague, and does it SO FUCKING WELL???!? HOW IS THIS MAN REAL
I absolutely love Orpheus, I was so amused at Dionysus being like “Zag, Zag, get this, we trick Orpheus that you and are like, connected! It’ll be so funny!” It’s a nod to Zagreus being referred to as Orphic Dionysus, before Dionysus was made into the Hellenistic version that he is and remains to this very day
I respect this game sooo much for not just picking and choosing info... especially since there's SO MANY little details and stories that are conflicting when it comes to the greek gods and legends. I can genuinely get cherry-picking too, but they were like nah, we can make it work.
At the same time I was doing the Orpheus and Eurydice route, I was doing the Patroclus and Achilles route, and the first time Orpheus sung this, I had just gotten done talking to Achilles about how he wanted Zagreus to send all his love to Patroclus, and I got SO SAD.

When i first respawned and heard this i just stopped and took this in. And wow this song just stuck with me. It truly is incredible hearing euradyce and orpheus and how it changes meaning.
I never really focused on the lyrics of the song when I had first met Eurydice and so when I got the song and gave it to Orpheus I knew he was going to sing it eventually because storywise it made sense, but then when I died and came back and he missed her so much and she gave him the song because deep down she still loved him and just hearing this song, destroyed me. Such a beautiful beautiful song, such a beautiful voice, it's so perfect and its absolutely my favorite song in the entire game.
Its soooo beautiful. I remember coming back and Zagreus took note of how mournful it is. Also I wish this was included on the soundtrack..slight bummer there.
I imagine Hades hearing that song at the desk with the same grumpy face but tearing apart inside, wishing the best for her beloved Persephone and her possible return. Sorry if I make spoiler, but you have to know a lot since you are here.
In the actual myth. When he failed to save his wife he played constant sad music so powerful and full of sorrow the world wept with him. The Gods couldn’t stop him because even they were too over come by his sad music to do anything. Every time he tried to kill him self the world itself refused to let him die. Rocks smashed over his head would turn to sand, knives rusted and turned to dust before they touched him, water would carry him to shore, the wind would carry him back to the cliffs edge. He couldn’t die, because his music made the world feel too bad to let him die. I can only imagine how much Orpheus’s music is tearing Hades up inside and the grumpy god is doing his best to stone face the whole song.

I just realized when Eurydice says “Good riddance To all the thieves To all the fools that stifled me” She’s referring to Orpheus. That why when Orpheus sings it it’s so painful for him. Not to mention her moving on.
When I emerged from the styx and heard Orpheus playing this song, it absolutely changed how i felt about this game. It went from just being a cool game, to being a GREAT game.
Early on in my playthrough, I came extremely close to completing my first run and barely failed. I felt incredibly bitter about it, but hearing this version of the song made that anger at myself short-lived. I think spending a good 5-10 minutes listening to it really helped me calm down enough to make peace with trying again the next day.

I didn't immediately get hooked by the story until Orpheus showed up. I just...really liked him for some reason. I really wanted to help him more than Zagreus in honesty.
I think there's a faint echo of eurydice's version of the song at "good riddance". I checked the other one and it seems it's the same only it's Orpheus this time around. Don't know if I'm right but it seems to only occur on that one part of the song. That's fucking cool.
Oh wow! I hadn’t even noticed that. Good catch! There totally is! There are other parts of the song that you can here the faint echo of Orpheus’s voice but at that good riddance it is definitely Eurydice!

Wow... i can't say I've ever heard someone sing at that octave. It both makes me uncomfortable and pleased at the same time. This is the equivalent of "Uncanny Valley Music".
Its quite beautiful, and its made rather fitting because its sung in falsetto. I don't know too much about classical/ancient greek music, but the idea of singing in falsetto fits the character Orpheus. The tale of Orpheus and Eurydice, being about musicians, was among the most frequent greek myths to be translated into opera. Orpheus, like most leading male roles in early opera, would have been performed by castrati, nowadays either a countertenor (male operatic falsetto singer) or woman. The fact that Darren Korb not only holds to this tradition of the role of Orpheus but also makes it still sound incredible in a more modern musical context is incredibly impressive. Korb has my vote as best soundtrack composer out there, maybe tied with Austin Wintory.

We're given a game with only four levels that keeps us coming back to play it again...and again...and again. Maybe this game is a representation of mortal incarnation itself.
this game is quite deep in fact
It broke me
WHY isn’t this on the official soundtrack?
There’s Eurydice’s solo, and there’s the duet, but Orpheus’ solo is absent. Baffling.
Maybe he wanted to give credit where it’s due?
Or hypnos forgot to put it on the list
@@thebaseandtriflingcreature174
HYPNOS IT’S YOUR ASS THIS TIME!
thanks to the devs for playing the version with the main vocal line like 15x in the game before finallly giving us this great backing track to sing along to

Haha yes! Eurydice's melody was like immediately there for me as well 🙊 Have never had such a beautiful experience in a game 😍
How, just HOW can a real-life man sing like he actually IS Orpheus of tragic legend, who sang so sorrowfully women were brought to miscarry and bring about plague, and does it SO FUCKING WELL???!? HOW IS THIS MAN REAL
Power of music my friend:)
❤️🖤💛
Is that really the power of Orpheus’s music? So sad that it caused miscarriages and plague?
@@rickyrojas2500 more than that too in the legends.
Trudging out of the Styx and hearing Orpheus's singing gives a sense of sorrow, and yet also comfort , as well.
I just stumbled on the duet and I just realized it's a game. Thank you for introducing this to me.
First time I heard the Eurydice version I thought she sang it perfectly, but the Orpheus version is just hauntingly beautiful.
When I am sad I listen to Orpheus sing. I only played Hades recently and when I heard him sing my heart just twisted and it still does
I absolutely love Orpheus, I was so amused at Dionysus being like “Zag, Zag, get this, we trick Orpheus that you and are like, connected! It’ll be so funny!”
It’s a nod to Zagreus being referred to as Orphic Dionysus, before Dionysus was made into the Hellenistic version that he is and remains to this very day
I respect this game sooo much for not just picking and choosing info... especially since there's SO MANY little details and stories that are conflicting when it comes to the greek gods and legends.
I only just discovered this game about a week ago. It's incredible.
Poor Orpheus
He goofed up, but only because he loved his wife...
If he loved his wife like he proclaim he did, he won't need to look back.
But he did
@@tingpekang1087 Yeah becausse he missed her
Your argument doesn't make sense. You have to realise that feelings can make you do things that are not logical at all especialy love - the strongest feeling of all.
Because if he didn't look back because he loved her then why did he looked back, hm?
What other feeling made him look back at her?
@@lorax1274 Because he asked the oldest of the three brothers? Because that God sow fear and what was that word again?
Doubt yes.
Doubtful that the God of The Underworld let him have a chance to take his wife's dead soul back to the living world.

This might be a reference to Sandman ( i have zero sources, i only noticed the physical ressemblance). Orpheus is a minor character, but the pale skin and his hairs made me think about it first (achilles and other humans have a more "alive" skin tone. The hairs are more those of sandman -who looks like neil gaman-

When i first respawned and heard this i just stopped and took this in. And wow this song just stuck with me. It truly is incredible hearing euradyce and orpheus and how it changes meaning.
I don't think I will ever not be stunned by Supergiant's music
I cried when I heard Orpheus sing for the first time
His singing is so sad, I believe the gods struggling amongst themselves to restraining from crying when hearing him play his song.
I hope to remember this song when I'm old, so I can experience this joy again
I keep listening to this again and again. Cant stop and dont really want to
I love singing along to his part at Eurydice, it’s so satisfying
I want this played on my funeral
I never really focused on the lyrics of the song when I had first met Eurydice and so when I got the song and gave it to Orpheus I knew he was going to sing it eventually because storywise it made sense, but then when I died and came back and he missed her so much and she gave him the song because deep down she still loved him and just hearing this song, destroyed me. Such a beautiful beautiful song, such a beautiful voice, it's so perfect and its absolutely my favorite song in the entire game.
The singers performance is so good, you literally can’t help but stay and listen.
Shame this is not included in the official Hades soundtrack on Steam, it is the best version imo.
Its soooo beautiful. I remember coming back and Zagreus took note of how mournful it is. Also I wish this was included on the soundtrack..slight bummer there.
Thank you for the upload! I've been looking for this song in the game folder, but no luck for me
This version is so miserable... I love it.
Hearing Eurydice's version of this song is so blissful and heavenly, but WHY AM I A SOBBING MESS WHEN HE SINGS THE SAME SONG?!
Yeah, I’m pretty sure you get the reveal about Persephone before Orpheus
I was so incredibly happy to see Orpheus sing again! And now I have a nice ambiance when flirting with Dusa!
His voice is so unique and perfect for this song. So much feeling in his words wtf genius
OH MY GOD!!!
I had no idea that Darren Korb provides the singing vocals for Orpheus, he sounds AMAZING!!! My heart literally exploded when I found this out.
I mean, this guy voices two characters, including the lead character. He's the composer and the audio director for Supergiant.
I mean, this is amazing. This is one the greatest games ever. ❤️❤️❤️🤯🤯🤯
I just realized when Eurydice says
“Good riddance
To all the thieves
To all the fools that stifled me”
She’s referring to Orpheus. That why when Orpheus sings it it’s so painful for him. Not to mention her moving on.
You're truly a hero for sharing the Orpheus only version, it was the one track my copy of the OST was missing
This game... Is just so special
Lyrics:
Farewell
To all the earthly remains
No burdens
No further debts to be paid
Atlas
Can rest his weary bones
The weight of the world
All falls away
In time
Goodbye
To all the plans that we made
No contracts
I'm free to do as I may
No hunger
No sleep except to dream
Mild and warm
Safe from all harm
Calm
Good riddance
To all the thieves
To all the fools that stifled me
They've come and gone
And passed me by
Good riddance
To all
Farewell
To all the earthly remains
No burdens
No further debts to be paid
Atlas
Can rest his weary bones
The weight of the world
All falls away
In time
My favorite version of the song, so sad and beautiful.
A shame that the "Orpheus only" version isn't on Spotify.
Thank you for uploading this, I love his solo :)
It has been years, but I still remember the moment I first heard this song. What a gorgeous melody
Playing this after a breakup. Wish them luck, walk away, don't look back.
I love the tonal difference... its so moving 😩
I just recently beat Hades for the first time, and when I respawned, I just sat in the hall and listened to him sing. I literally cried and decided that the first side quest I took seriously was going to be his.
The fact this is sung by Darren amazes me. This man has the vocal range of an actual God.
Hearing this for the first time, will always be legendary
When i heard the song, i was in pure awe, not only because it felt i was progressing a lot, but because i changed the world while so, and this song just told me all of this
Damn that "farewell" at the start sent shivers when i respawned

Though as a musician it's kind of funny to see Orpheus holding a lyre while the music is clearly being played by a guitar-like instrument.

Wow... i can't say I've ever heard someone sing at that octave. It both makes me uncomfortable and pleased at the same time.
This is the equivalent of "Uncanny Valley Music".
You mean this low?
I gotta say, I am surprised how well Darren can handle these extremes, both high AND low.
It's not the octave, but the tone of his voice that gives it that feeling.
@@tara-duncanmcleod3433 Not enough singers utilize Falsetto now and days. Most try and force that range into head voice. Only modern one I can think of is Brendon Urie
