Nossob Rest Camp is one of the most popular accommodation options in the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park and lies approximately 170km north of the main entrance gate at Twee Rivieren. Nossob is so popular, in fact, that you usually have to book your accommodation there nearly a year in advance to get a booking.
Nossob Rest Camp has a filling station, a swimming pool and a small shop that sells gifts, basic groceries and wifi vouchers. There's also a small information centre with stunning photos and animal facts next to reception.
There are two types of chalets to choose from at Nossob: The River Front Chalets, which have a view over the Nossob riverbed, are newer and better equipped than the regular chalets, which are a bit more basic and not located next to the fence.
There are also two campsites in Nossob - a large, main campsite with small stands right on top of each other, and that shares a communal ablution block, and a smaller, more private campsite next to the fence with Premium Stands that are spaces further apart and that have exclusive ablution facilities and kitchenettes.
Nossob Rest Camp's power goes off around 10pm each night and only goes back on around 5am each morning. Don't walk around without a head light and closed shoes after dark, because snakes like Cape cobras and puffadders are common in camp.
Nossob's main attraction is the camp hide that overlooks a productive man-made waterhole that's flood-lit at night along the Nossob riverbed.
In the mornings, I typically drive north from Nossob towards Kwang Waterhole, because lions are often found in the road here. Just after sunrise, I aim for Cubitje Quap Waterhole to photograph doves, sandgrouse and all the predators they attract, as well as large raptors that come down to drink around midday.
In the afternoons, I usually drive south from Nossob towards Kaspersdraai and Cheleka waterholes in search of cheetah. Around sunset, I like to be at Marie se Gat, a waterhole that's bathed in golden light in the afternoon. I've seen lions here many times.

Thanks so much for sharing Villiers, your routes much what I follow when there. We were visited end of Feb beginning March this year and with the good rains this year and Kwang overgrown I found myself pushing more north and Bedinkt and Polentswa most rewarding. Exceptional destination and my favorite.

Excellent, Villiers, I see very few Nossob related videos. Only Mabuasehube and then the focus is mainly on beers, braai and 4x4. Nossob dies first in such videos

Do you know about the Mana pools National Park in Zimbabwe and if you know how is it like to stay there and how is the sightings of the big five there

    • @TheSafariExpert
      @TheSafariExpert  2 роки тому

I do know Mana Pools, Mariska. Sightings are best in later winter (August to October) when game flocks to the Zambezi River. Ellies en buffalo are virtually guaranteed and you stand a good chance of seeing lions if you stay for long enough. Leopards are very hard to find and I don’t think they have rhino.

Thanks, ED! It’s funny - Nossob is actually my least favourite of the main camps, but not because I don’t like it. I just love Mata Mata and Twee Rivieren more 🤪

@@TheSafariExpert This is true, all three are brilliant, the only drawback I find with Mata Mata is the fact that you are limited to a single road for game viewing. Fortunately its a very productive one!

Hi Villiers, thanks for your excellent vids. My wife and I are in the middle of planning our first KG trip in June and have been fortunate to get 5 nights in chalet accommodation. Due to availability we will be doing some hectic back and forth between camps and we would welcome your advise. The first night is in Nossob but we will be coming in from Kakamas …. is this at all possible distance and time wise if we left Kakamas at 6am to make the camp before close? The second night is Mata - Mata. What would you suggest for the days route? Night 3 and 4 are at !xaus. What would be best for the day’s circular route, perhaps head towards TR and back between those nights? Night 5 is TR but we will be heading for Namibia the next morning so when to leave camp as its a 450km day to the overnight. Looking at this the planning is logistically terrible but it was all we could do to get any accommodation. Thanks for your time on this. Ian & Charlotte.

Sjo! That's a lot of driving 🙈 You should reach Nossob in time if you leave early on day 1. On day two, leave Nossob very early and make a game drive to Mata-Mata via the upper dune road. That leaves you with the afternoon to drive around Mata-Mata. On day three, take a slow drive down the Auob River and explore it until you have to head to !xaus. I'm not sure whether it's worth driving back to the Auob River between nights 3 and 4. Perhaps try to explore the area around the lodge (in the dunes) with camp staff - I'm sure they have some activities. On day 5 you can do a game drive to TR early in the morning and then have the afternoon to explore the southern part of the Nossob River. On your last morning, head out very early towards Mata-Mata along the Auob.
In my opinion, this is the 'worst' possible way to explore the Kgalagadi - too much hopping around, but I understand that availability plays a massive role. Enjoy the trip!

@@TheSafariExpert Thank you Villiers ... I cannot agree more about this trip and it's planning. My mom would have said "dis gat kant voorentoe seun" but nouja. The problem is !Xaus as we booked in Oct and all there was, was originally MM for night 1, and then TR for nights 2, 3 & 4 ... that would actually have been fine ... if it was not for me as I though let me surprise my dear wife with 2 and 3 in Ix and this is the outcome. I have been on the SANParks site daily since to see what could change and Nossob came up last Friday ... so that actually made it worse ...LOL! But we are super keen even though it's a little crazy with the up and down but we have a 4x4 so should survive, with 2 weeks in Nam after that. I usually do motorcycle rides to Nam every year so this is a whole new world. Cheers Ian

Hi Villiers. Again thanks for the info. I managed to book TR for the first night so no Kakamas to Nossop crazyness … so I have a night in Nossop for June 19th to cancel. If you know of someone looking we can coordinate and I will cancel in time. Either way I must do so within a week from today for the sake of other travelers timeframes. Cheers Ian

Hi Villiers! I'm planning a trip to KTP next year.
Firstly, is May a good time to go? Secondly, will a 4x2 Ford Ranger be able to get to Nossob and Mata Mata?
Thanks, and keep up the good content!
