Great point about steering the outside leg/ski along a circle at the same time you are shortening the inside leg ... beautifully simple. Also liked the explanation of shortening the inside leg to increase edge angle WITHOUT adding tension/flexion in the outside leg. I thought the hopped edge release and reset was such a great example of what can be accomplished while retaining great posture/structure.

jf i absolutely love the videos and the approach! the long lost art of steering everyone starts in a snow plow and there speed control is through steering .
after watching all your videos one right after the other ! I realize im just tipping and in hard compression i'm going to work

I told them ,that is it from you!I'm infected about this kind skills and movements. It's big different bec. ,not just push hardly the outside leg,and during this time make a pedal with inside legs. thisburning my legs earlier with the old ski technik.Yours give for me much deeper feeling and harmony. Thanks a lot!

As I get ready for this season, I am really enjoying these videos JF...Merci encore. The point about the belly button towards outside ski...just perfect. The set of exercises where you steer under the inside ski...also awesome.

A lot of good drills here. I wouldn't have known from looking at the title. Very clear intuitive explanation. I can feel what should be the correct movements just by listening to you; let's hope I do them properly on the piste!

Many thanks for great instructional videos and for Project 2016 especially.
The main idea of your skiing approach is a core strength.
Can you please advise some exercises on the ground (i.e. in the gym) for core strength.

On a point of etiquite other skiers don't often encounter some one skiing up hill towards them and they react badly. Your demos are exquisite and I hope my peers confuse you with me, I work the same progressions, we dress alike and put our goggles up when speaking. i like your style. And now... my progression of stem turns into Javelin Turns as demonstrated by Micala Shiffrin.

I am a 50 yr. plus level 3 PSIA member still teaching and I think you, John gillies and Sebastian Michael are outstanding. helping my old skiing as well. Chuck

This is far beyond. The best ski technique video on youtube.I think you teach better than Daren turner and warren smith. But i dont understand someting.Arent you carving? You only talk about steering. You say shortening inside leg makes you edge the skis and carve right?Isnt this carving?People say simply roll on edges, roll the knees etc than you carve, you say simply shorten inside leg.So if i wanna carve, should i only shorten the inside leg?

    • @JfBeaulieu76
      @JfBeaulieu76  9 років тому +2

+Mehmet Berk Arslan Thank you for your comments! For sure I am carving, but I think it is important to develop some precision in the steering in order to develop more versatility.

Steering is used to guide the direction of a ski that is tipped on it's edge.

Hey JF this series of video's has been the most help and the most inspirational I've seen for years. Your common sense natural approach is fantastic. One question, when you steer is it the leg rotating in the hip joint which seems to me more of a pivot or do you drive the foot round the arc whichseems to leave me on the back of the boot. Be great if you could clear this up for me.
Absoloutly brilliant stuff though, many many thanks. Mike

    • @JfBeaulieu76
      @JfBeaulieu76  10 років тому +2

Bonjour Mike, thank you for the good words. There are 3 elements I use to steer effectively:
      1) Anchor the core
      2) Use the glutes ( keep the outside leg long)
      3) Use the adductors to create a cross under effect ( BOS cross underneath the COM vs the opposite)
The combination of those moves with a proper mix of pivoting and edging create strong steering. I do have a feel that my leg is rotating slightly in the hip socket, but I try to reduce the twisting effect and work more with a "deviation" of the direction of my skis with the 3 point above. Hope to ski with you soon. Jf
ps: When you say: "you drive the foot round the arc which seems to leave me on the back of the boot"
The foot is driven by the 3 elements above. If you feel the back of the boot, it is because the Core is weak.

0:40 This is what it looks and feels like, it is NOT how you make it Look and Feel like that. You balance on your downhill arch and lean your hip into the hill more as you move your upper body more down the hill. That makes your leg angle steeper which put's the ski more on edge and it bends more because of it's design and the ski turns more. Did I say anything about steering the legs? When you turn the steering wheel in your car, do you push your feet through the floor and push the front tire around? This is Show with No Tell.
0:50 He isn't even "Steering" his legs when he demonstrates it. Watch his hip go into the hill as he drops his downhill shoulder to compensate so he is still balanced on the downhill ski.
1:18 This is 100% wrong. He has no idea what skiing is. Sure he can ski and has a cute accent but he is Clueless. This couldn't be farther from reality. When his hip goes into the hill, the tip of his ski digging in more which bends the ski more and it turns more.
1:52 Keep your legs at the same length when you are standing sideways on a hill? Really? Stand on a staircase sideways and try that.
2:00 How exactly are you going to role the skis on the side? Knees and ankles were not created to bend Sideways! Inside leg getting shorter? How exactly do I do that? How about getting off your inside or uphill foot and balance on the arch of your outside or downhill foot? Doesn't That teach people something?
3:30 Every time he rises up, he should be telling you to get off your downhill arch and balance on your uphill arch.
3:50 When he skis for himself he DOES NOT DO THAT! he feels something that leads him to believe he Should do that and is oblivious to what he is actually doing. That's the difference between a Two Dimensional Reactor and a Three Dimensional THINKER!
    '
4:05 This is how ridiculous this is getting. Do you see him forcibly pushing down on one ski after the other? When HE balances on one foot after the other to make turns, he feels pressure building up so he tells you to apply pressure down on that foot. What he doesn't realize is, skiing is a constant state of You falling down the hill. When you get off your downhill foot which you were balancing on, you start to fall. Because that fall is making your legs fall also, the uphill foot will instantly roll over onto the arch/inside edge of the ski and the ski will turn as designed and it will come around and catch you. THAT, is the pressure he feels building up. He is telling you to make the pressure happen by forcing your body Down because he has no clue what is going on yet he has 6,800 followers! Look at him push that ski around! Why does he have skis on if he is doing the work? Does he drive a Flintstone car?
4:30 This was nothing but Gibberish! How do you activate your core and then your lower body? What does that even mean?
4:40 You keep looking for that uphill skis that will trace an arch for you. This is no language barrier here. He simple Wants to be a famous ski instructor on UA-cam without offering anything. How's that helpful uphill ski search going JF?
4:50 Notice how he is Now getting off the downhill foot and balancing on the uphill foot. With his weight on that uphill/outside arch, his SKI makes the turn NOT him! With all those Down motions he is trying to Force gravity to pull his foot down harder. Ridiculous. Just stand up on the arch of your uphill foot and go for a ride. If you want the ski to make a tighter turn, lean into the front of your boot, move your hip into the will and your upper body down the hill and the ski will bend and turn more.
5:20 All this cross over crap is just that. He is telling you to force something to happen that AUTOMATICALLY happens when your feet are going across the hill and your upper body is facing down the hill. He has absolutely No Clue how to teach skiing! 75,000 views!
My index finger tips are getting blistered. I think you will get the point if you Think and study what I've said. P.S. I don't have an accent or much of as bedside manor but I DO know how to teach people how to Understand what skiing I and what you have to do to allow your Skis to make the turns. That's what you expected when you paid all that money right?
