Pipers had to wear a kilt because trousers could not contain the ballocks of steel they had. To enter the hell that was no man’s land, armed with nothing but pipes, is true valour. Lest we forget!
Pipers were normally kept in the rear during WW1. With some rare exceptions (and only at the start of the war), the idea of pipers going over the top or leading men into battle is a myth. It just never happened.
The piper was so instrumental in the morale of troops . Just knowing they were still Alive playing was enough to keep even the most dire of circumstances to push men to valor
I learned today that my Dad's Uncle died at the battle of Loos. He was in the 7th KOSB and fell the same day that Laidlaw played his pipes, so it is quite likely that he heard this song in his final moments.
2 Pipers were awarded the Victoria Cross during WW1,they led the assault when everything went to hell in a hand basket.again, only guys braver seems to b"Doc".
Loos surely?(!) 25th Sept. - 10th/13th Oct. 1915. More than 70% casualties on the Allies side. "From what I can ascertain, some of the divisions did actually reach the enemy's trenches, for their bodies can now be seen on the barbed wire." - Rawlinson God Bless all that made the sacrifice. Many whose resting place is known only to Him. Lest we forget [for more than one day a year!]
It is often 'regurgitated' that the Hun was instructed to specifically aim for officers & pipers - because they were the greatest motivational elements. Remember; the Brits were strongly Class indoctrinated so did as they were told but fought hardest for, & with, their mates/comrades. The original 'Band of Brothers'.
I can see the piper that went over the top leadin everyone, during the battle of the Somme.jus the pipes.those dudes are brave to point of stupid like medics.

Imagine being pinned down on the beaches of Normandy ..death and destruction raining down . The slightest movement drawing withering fire from 50calibre machine guns and entrenched 88lbers .. as you look around and see compatriots and comrades friends and even family members blown to bits or riddled with holes . The horror is overwhelming..nothing but despair, smoke and death linger on the air ..hope is lost ... then all of a sudden the earsplitting screech of the jocks pipes breaks through the sound of the munitions . The veil of Despair is torn asunder by a lightningbolt of unmistakable sound..Unimaginable levels of fear would've crippled the Germans in their tracks and the morale boost to the allies wouldve been immeasurable . Godbless the pipers and their balls of iron.
I've heard better sounds coming out of cats in heat. How anyone could ever think that this form of music is appealing in any way is clearly off-kilter.

So this is the correct pipe music then.
“I pity the man who hears the pipes and was not born in Scotland!”
You don't need to be Born in Scotland. I'm German, Born and raised in Hannover, but the pipes and drums always gets me.
The battle of loose , a piper played this to inspire British and Scottish soldiers into a bayonet charge

Remember Bill Millin, who stormed the beaches of Normandy which nothing than his bagpipes to courage his men to fight the germans. Balls of steels!
He also was wearing a sgian-dubh, or "black knife", sheathed inside his kilt-hose on the right side.
