Many speakers list frequency response as a range, e.g. "30 Hz - 20 kHz"; this is usually the point at which the deviation reaches -3 dB (though there's not uniformity on the 3, and unfortunately it's often unspecified, as is the reference point from which the deviation is measured, or how it's measured). The questioner was pretty clearly asking about this.

      For electronics the -3dB or +0 / -3dB points are quoted, loudspeakers historically are quoted + / - 3dB, see www.ecoustics.com/articles/understanding-speaker-frequency-response/

Hi I got some really loud tweeters in my car the thing is they have a higher noise floor so I hear a hiss. Is there anyway I can keep them loud and dynamic but take away the hiss?

I have to agree the frequency response curve is difficult to interpret but I believe it has some merit for the person who has some experience. For example a speaker with a bass rise in the 100 to 200 Hz range might sound OK playing rock music but not ideal for other types of music. Of course, as you say, the listening test is the most important thing as specs can not tell you much about the real character of the speaker. How it handles transients, how detailed the base is, etc. Even listening tests can be misleading at times. I often felt that if a speaker sounds impressive on certain types of music it may be over emphasizing certain parts of the spectrum. Still the ear is probably our best judge but just make sure you like the way it sounds on the music you like to listen to.

Detail retrieval vs timbre vs texture? The latter two are hard to evaluate when comparing speakers/headphones to other units.

JBL Authentics 500 goes 40 Hertz.
    Advertised.
    But then it goes deeper.
    Like 35 Hertz.
    They rate it wrong?
It does not lose sound after 40 Herts.
    It goes deeper.
    How does that make sense?
    Frequency range 20000 - 40.
    But goes deep???
    How???
JBL Partybox 310 also goes 32 Herts but is rated 45 Hertz???
    I am so confused!
    😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫

You can tell from specs which speakers aren't worth testing by ear.
It doesn't give you an answer to which speaker you need, but it does narrow down the range of choices.

You are a magician, specially with the useless information most speaker builders give with no reference whatsoever.. Maybe you can elaborate what it is you use in the specs to make your first choice.

If it grossly out of spec, then sure. But honestly I have never come across a pair of speakers that have advertised specs that are so piss poor that you can truly discard it. Especially considering most speaker manufacturers will embellish and pretty much lie on their specs anyways.

No you don't want a flat response especially in the crossover region you'll get amplitude that given frequencies and boundary deflections an undesirable sound
SPL is a good indication on speakers capabilities what you should be looking for and impedance and cabinet impedance

Our hearing also has a frequency response and frequency range. I like to EQ with a +4dB at 12kHz to rejuvenate my hearing and recover some of the treble I lost by aging.

    • @ThinkingBetter
      @ThinkingBetter 4 роки тому +4

@@nopinionocomnt Yes absolutely correct. You don't want to go shopping for a speaker just for that quality. Usually the best speakers don't come with such "tweak". Of course I'm aware that the high-end audio industry has got itself into some absurd philosophy that all EQ is bad. This is a huge bummer for audio.

Tone controls give and tone controls take away. I am definitely more of a musical timber kind of guy. If introducing some phase variations messes with the soundstage, that doesn't really bother me. If you desire to 'see' the musicians in front of you, go to a concert (when this COVID-19 stuff gets back to some reasonable semblance of the old normal, but don't jump the gun; in the mean time, be well, be safe).

    • @gaba665

Stephen Smith Phase variations at 12kHz are my least concern and besides, through the entire frequency range, the phase is already a mess when you have multiple drivers, cross-over filter and room reflections. Phase is an example of something you can measure but where listening can be a better judge what is optimum.

@@ThinkingBetter Exactly. Sorry for the poor phrasing on my part, as I realized after clicking the reply button. It was not my intent to single out "you" personally, but rather the broader audience of Paul's UA-cam channel. Mea culpa. For those who consider soundstage and image an important part of the listening experience, that is certainly a viable position. But it is not the only one. Music reproduction is just that, reproduction. And I enjoy it immensely; sub-optimal room acoustics, aging ears, and all.

Paul, I like the way you refer to bass with your left hand, and treble with the right hand. 2:06
Keyboards are arranged this way, and so are graphic equalizers. I just noted that on older vintage gear with knobs, the bass control is usually on the left, and the treble on the right of that.
The part I found disturbing is that I am watching you, and watching your hands respond in the mirrored image reference to what my brain had to sit and process what it was seeing. Funny how perspective and point of view change things, just like our hobby.
