- THESE TECHNIQUE HAS ITS USE. SOME ARE PRIMARY OTHERS ARE INSERTS BUT NEITHER ONE IS CONSIDERED MORE ADVANCE OVER THE OTHER - These techniques are what we refer to as inserts. They are used for certain situations where they're most likely to be used. Many have argued that many of these are extremely difficult to pull off in a sparring situation, which indeed is true if you try to use it as your primary tools for defense. As I have mentioned earlier, these are inserts. They tend to show up at circumstances where they're appropriately needed . This is achieved through constant practise and having them tested in pressure drilling and fighting until it becomes instinctive wherein without thinking about it you are able to pull them off especially in tight situations . The reason why most fail to appreciate the functional use of these techniques is because during sparring time wherein one is supposed to learn, the attitude is focused so much on winning. As a result they become too cautious (of course there's a time to adopt this attitude) Therefore the tendency is to apply techniques that they are only most comfortable using and tend to stick to that all the time. They don't dare themselves to experiment anymore. I tell my students "If one wishes to learn how to apply these techniques in actual sparring, then stop focusing on winning and being too careful for the meantime and let yourself be vulnerable this time in trying to apply them." So what if you get hit while trying to execute them, It is part of learning! Keep doing it again and again. You will fail for sure, many times (and that is perfectly alright) but that is a necessary step and the price you pay if you wish to succeed. Sooner or later with constant practise and diligence, your mind, sword and body will begin to move as one and will instinctively know the right moment when to pull them off.
Note: But be careful, not all techniques we see around are functional. Many are merely a product of theatrics. And not all techniques are appropriate for our body type (techniques that that are applicable to a small man might not be applicable to a tall person. Either you adjust the mechanics of using it or just leave it to those who can use it) Those are the ones we should avoid. Remember practise it first and see whether it would really work for you or not. If not, don't throw them away. Keep it instead and give it to those who might find them useful. That is if your goal is to be a teacher.
These techniques were deliberately done in a slow manner for the purpose of this video.
