Battery Saving Switch in Digital Caliper

  • One of the problems with cheap digital calipers is relatively quick battery drain. Even when the caliper is "turned off" - so it seems.
    In reality, the display off doesn't mean that the circuit no longer drains the battery. Current measurements reveal that a cheap caliper turned off continues to consume the same, or almost the same, current in both ON and OFF state. A quick remedy of the problem is removing the battery when caliper is not in use. Another remedy is to install a switch cutting off the battery.

    I always take the battery out.

      There are two reasons for doing that: 1. To save the battery from depletion, and 2. To prevent it from leaking inside the caliper.
      A mechanical switch solves problem #1.
      A lithium battery solves problem #2.
      But in case of LR44 or SR44 batteries (Mitutoyo calipers), I would buy them brand name, fresh, and always replace for a brand new every few years.
