    We’re Not That Far From Being Able to Grow Human Bones in a Lab
    www.smithsonian...
    “‘Grow your own bone’ might not sound like much of a business slogan, since even children do just that naturally. But EpiBone, a two-year-old company based in Harlem, New York, has adopted the slogan because it sees a big opportunity: Surgeons perform about a million bone grafts in the United States each year, either with the patient’s own bone tissue, necessitating two surgeries, or with synthetic or donated material, which a patient’s body sometimes rejects.”
    3D-Printed 'HyperElastic Bone' Could Quickly Mend Breaks
    www.seeker.com...
    “A cheap and easy to make synthetic bone material has been shown to stimulate new bone growth when implanted in the spines of rats and a monkey's skull, researchers said. Human trials using the biomaterial, called Hyper-Elastic Bone (HB), could begin in the next five years, according to the research team from Northwestern University.”
    Bone Growth
    www.bbc.co.uk/s...
    “The skeleton of a newborn baby is made up of more than 300 parts, most of which are made of cartilage. Over time, most of this cartilage turns into bone, in a process called ossification. As the baby grows, some of its bones fuse together to form bigger bones.”

    the fourth method was used on me after i had a terrible accident. they took out some bone out of that iliac crest of mine, the left side... about the volume of a tablespoon... then they grafted it to two of my left hand fingers which were completely shattered due to the accident. took about 2-3 months of bed rest but was worth it. my iliac crest grew on its own and is good as new now.

      Did that to my destroyed clavicle as well. Had 8 screws with a plate which broke, suggested this and am better off, although if I am to bump that part anywhere (a year after) still can see the stars. Healing iliac crest was way more painful than healing clavicle.

    does that mean stem cells will help blind people gain their Vision back and help deaf people gain their hearing back?

    • @Ipanophis
      @Ipanophis 7 років тому +24

      adrian ortiz depends on whether you were born blind or injured.we can fix injured or lost eyes. but being born blind is sometimes caused by genetics. their own stem cells likely could not help unless it was an epigenetic mechanism

    • @AifDaimon
      @AifDaimon 7 років тому +5

      adrian ortiz if born blind and/or deaf, there's nothing you can do but to adapt to it. If you somehow lost your vision or hearing at some point in your life, however, then stem cells can come to your rescue.

    • @fergoka
      @fergoka 7 років тому +4

      Not really. I mean not yet...First we have to wait for a successful eye transplant but is almost impossible doe to the insane complexity of nerve system of the eyes.

    • @Ipanophis
      @Ipanophis 7 років тому +11

      Actually, it's not that hard now. We have been doing the wrong tech. Recently, we have started reconnecting severed spinal cords of para/quadriplegic patients. So eyes are the next step. Instead of trying to connect them. We inject stem cells and allow them to set up their own pathways. The spinal cord thing was middle of last year.

    There is a 4th option, synthetic bone graft. I had one implanted several years ago to repair a hole in my tibial plateau. The graft is gradually resorbed and replace by one's own newly generated bone tissue.

    How does the human body know how to heal to the exact state as it was before an injury?

    • @kobetaylor4683
      @kobetaylor4683 7 років тому +3

      Steinar Jakobsen because before the injury your body grew on it's own already. It mainly follows the code in your DNA, your body has lots of copies of DNA, DNA to cells or the human body, is like lines of code to a computer. So if a bone breaks, the body grows it back the same way it was before, because that's how it grew in the first place, using that same part of stored DNA. Hope that helps explain a little :)

    Does the 3D printed scaffolding remain as part of the bone itself, or is it somehow broken down or removed? What material is the 3D scaffolding made from? I’m an undergraduate trying to specifically dedicate my life to researching tissue engineering so it would be much appreciated if someone could clear this up for me :)

      Explicit Tech And you won't be needing to attach your old arm because your body will regenerate yourself a new arm after applying stem cells ! :D. jk Now just imagine if that was possible? lmao even aliens would be jealous of our tech.

      I've got a bit of bone nercosis going on, so this will help if that's possible. I don't want arthritis.
