AKA "the divine" John, as well. One of my favorites, too. Especially love the Mahler and the Sibelius 2!
My wife played under one of Sir John's proteges, an Aussie conductor named Patrick Flynn. Patrick was brilliant and, like Barbirolli, exacting to the point of mordant criticism of unprepared players. It was always in the service of the music but, by the 1980s and 1990s, that was no longer considered acceptable and Patrick never got a posting worthy of his immense talents.
That aside, I agree that the Elgar LP sonics leave much to be desired which is tragic considered the beauty of du Pre's performance.

His Butterfly with Scotto and Bergonzi - now that's a recording!

Great video thank you! I saw him live once at the very end of his career in Leeds (Eroica). I was very young (9) but enjoyed it. My mother heard him many times beginning after the war at Bellevue in Manchester (which was basically a circus tent). She also heard Furtwangler in 1948 in Birmingham with the BPO. She preferred Sir John. I believe his work with the NYPO was quite good (you can hear this on recordings) but anyone following Toscanini was likely to pale in comparison, especially someone so relatively inexperienced. The VW is an absolute reference Tallis - but can I also recommend Silvestri with the Bournemouth recorded in Winchester Cathedral and Stokowski with the RPO late in his life, absolutely incredible string sonority.

"Sea Pictures" with Janet Baker is one of my favorite recordings...it's so beautiful, it's sublime. I can listen over and over and it never gets irksome; the music is wonderfully evocative Just stunning. I have the coupling with "The Dream of Gerontius," which is a bit of a harder work to get into...for me, at least.

Hello, thank you for an interesting channel, very interesting series about conductors, I would like to encourage you to create an episode about gramophone cartridges, which of them do you consider suitable for playing classical music, if possible, thank you in advance and best regards

I agree the cello concerto is dreary, but sea pictures and sound is wonderful, the emi legends reissue on cd is great

Of the Elgars I have, I probably like the 1986 EMI Classics CD the best. The Esoteric SACD is also very good but it doesn't include Sea Pictures. The latest inexpensive vinyl release is passable to my ear but I'd love to hear the ERC version.

Is that sibelius 2 recording the one where Sir John's mother passed the night before the session?

Sir John was one of a kind, and so glad great long play examples (LP's) of his music making.
Sad that his time in America was ruff on him.
Slatkin was kind & respectful to include Fanefare for Glorious John on his RVW set 👍

Certainly was. Yes, the NYP time was unfortunate, but the orchestra is famously difficult to work with. Gotta be Toscanini-like :) Cheers, Anthony

The Alto pressing of the 'English String Music' must be nice. Have never heard a bad issue from them. Sometimes tough to come by in N. America. Added to the want-list. Very much enjoying this series. Cheers.

      Thx.
It’s usable, probably the weakest Alto I’ve heard, but getting a clean OG is getting prohibitively expensive. In the meantime, the Alto gives a good account of itself.
