Your content is always interesting and entertaining, and this installment is no exception!
You can’t include everything, but one surprise omission: No Brunswick Stew? I grew up in New York State but moved to Atlanta in 1981. One of my first culinary discoveries in the South was Brunswick Stew, and I’ve never been in a Southern restaurant without ordering a bowl!
    Thanks again for your channel!

No such thing as "low fat or low calories food" in the South!!

Boiled peanuts are very popular in Queensland Australia too, but no so much in the other states, I personally don't like them😂

Krispy Kreme: it's the red "HOT NOW" sign you're looking for. If it's lit, they're making fresh donuts.

We love your videos! We're planning a trip to Europe in the spring and would love to bump into you. However, I have a couple of corrections for you. 1. We live in Cuenca, Ecuador and you CAN drink the tap water in Cuenca. It is the only city in Ecuador that you can drink the water. 2. Being originally from Louisiana, my specialty is pecan pie. I'm sorry to say you pronounced it wrong. It's actually "puh-con". 3. Not a correction, but a huge 👍 for showing my favorite Blue Plate Mayonnaise!

It's pronounced puh-kahn, not pee-can. The pee can is what you use when the driver won't stop for a bathroom break.

Note: depending on where you are, you can ask for unsweet tea, or a blend of unsweet and sweet tea, if you don't like too much sugar, because sweet tea is true to its name. You will find unsweet tea as an option where there has been more influx from the North, like the Raleigh area in North Carolina. Btw, re trying the biscuits in the South: "the flour is different" = the South uses far more butter LOL (even though the flour really is different - softer - and that is a factor).

I am headed to Birmingham, Alabama, in July. From California, and I always love the food around the country AWAY from California. I loved the southern food in Savannah, Georgia, and my goal is to try smoked chicken with white sauce and fried green tomatoes in July.
    Any suggestions are welcome :)

With the shrimp boil along with cray fish and crawfish we also throw in some live crabs, red and green bell peppers along with the small red potatoes and corn…you can actually throw whatever kind of veggies to your preference just be mindful of your veggies because some cook much faster than others for instance if you want okra in it you would throw that in during the last 5-10 minutes depending on how fast the liquid is boiling.

I was a little skeptical. Could he do the South justice? Would he have the same level of expertise that he shows in the wonderful European videos? Much to my surprise, yes! This is a great introduction to southern food for tourists. The only challenge is identifying the distinct regional cuisine within the south. For example, hush puppies in the VA tidewater or Carolina low country are usually sweet. In the Gulf South, they are usually savory with onions. Great job!

You're making me hungry for southern food! Yum. Just a short question: What makes sweet tea sweet? Is honey used? I enjoyed this video. 😊❤

Barbecue in the south in addition to regular red sauce also has a mustard sauce that is to die for!😊

Thank you for calling it what it is, "traditional southern cooking" - not "soul food!' It won't be long before lasagna and wiener schnitzel will be called "soul food", so sick of "others" stealing what's not theirs to legitimize themselves!

    • @kevinerose
      @kevinerose 4 місяці тому

Right. Everyone was poor back then when everyone came together to swap recipes and cook good food. When I think of "soul food" I'm thinking even things that the poorest people were eating like chitlins and pig's feet and chicken feet. And brains or tongue. Stuff like that. Then you are really getting some culture with that sort.

Collard greens are simmered for a couple of hours or so with ham hocks or other meats; definitely NOT sautéed.

    • @AlexA-zk6cp

Both dishes are similar and rice is in both dishes. Rice is cooked in the pot when making jambalaya but with gumbo the rice is cooked separately. There’s usually okra in gumbo and not in jambalaya. Gumbo is more like a soup or stew.

I think the other thing is there is a lot of variety of food items in them. Probably some seafood like shrimp and some sausages included in that. For veggies probably corn and okra and other hearty veggies. I'm from the North so that is about all I know about it.
