- After listening to this Richard Wright gem; a solo piano demo of what eventually became the unforgettable piece "Us And Them" from the masterpiece "Dark Side Of The Moon" I felt I had to make this short tribute movie. This outtake is from the newly released "DSOTM immersion CD" set and so captures the beauty of this immensely talented pianist/composer/singer. I was 14 years old when I first heard "Dark Side Of The Moon" and this was my favorite piece, forever changing my destiny, steering me towards the path of becoming a life long musician and composer. The immense space in Pink Floyd's music taught me that music could be a boundless edifice that we could actually reside in, take refuge in and in it find every kind of emotion accessible to mankind. I was fortunate to see the original "The Wall" performance in Los Angeles 1980 but sadly never got to hear them play my favorite pieces from "Dark Side", Wish You Were Here", "Animals" and all the other great albums that came before. My closest approximation to their music is probably my ballet "Gaudi -- Dancing About Architecture" where I created musical pieces inspired by the architecture of Antonio Gaudi; in other words, music that one can reside in, dance in, live in. The piece "Finca Guell Pavilions" actually recreates the slot machine montage from "Money" into a classical scenario, something that to the experienced Pink Floyd listener is obvious from the first tam scrape. Richard Wright's unique sentiment has crept into many of my piano compositions; the solo piano pieces in my chamber opera "A Dream Play" and the immersing sound-space, and at the same time intimacy, of my chamber ballet "Romeo & Juliet". Of course, just like Richard Wright I could not do all this without the invaluable contribution with the great musicians I have the honor of working with. Richards monumental addition to Pink Floyd has never been in doubt and I remember how the hair on my fore-arms stood up when I saw and heard them reunite for that one concert in London a few years ago. What a gift to us all that was; that the animosity between these hyper creative but often sometimes aversive musicians could be put aside for just one moment in time again, now unfortunately, after his untimely passing, forever impossible until we all get to play "The Great Gig In The Sky".
So simple, and gentle. What an extraordinary piece of music. Wright was a soul of Pink Floyd. Just listen how lifeless and empty The Final Cut is compared to other albums(still like it though). He was one of those band members who are always overshadowed by others, staying in a background and creating their magic, being absolutely irreplaceable part of the harmony.
Excellent! He was not the front man in Pink Floyd but his contribution was a vital piece of their success. He was an incredible pianist.
I think this is the VIOLENT SEQUENCE
Only a beautiful soul could produce such an emotional score. x RIP Richard x
Grandissimo e sottovalutato
Rick had a very distinctive and subtle feel for harmony. Always just a little unexpected twist in there that pulls in your attention. Pink Floyd would have been the poorer without him.
Bring on the feels.
it got me too...
Fantastico ,Richard wright
This is NOT a demo of Us and Them. This is a piece called The Violent Sequence which was originally recorded for the Zabriskie Point movie sessions but the director rejected it because he found it too "depressing". Wright reworked it for DSOTM and it became Us and Them.
Wow. I did not know that! I really need to give Zabriskie Point a listen at some point.
Abhijith D'Souza Which would make it the first demo of 'Us and Them'
+Abhijith D'Souza You're 100% correct . I think it was Italian Director Michaelangelo Antonioni. Off now to dig out my Zabriskie point album on Vinyl!!
There's a DVD called Classic Albums: DSOTM. It's about how this album came together. They talk about this track and Zabriske Point. Roger even does an impression of the director Antonioni, "eet is too sad!"
Abhijith D'Souza correct "-"
I could listen to this for hours on a loop
Thanks! I had no idea this has been released. I've only ever heard very dirty copies of it.
He is the soul of the Pink Floyd. RIP MR WRIGHT
Sequenza musicale celestiale R.I.P. Richard
RIP, we all miss you.
This song always brings tears to my eyes. So gentle but has a profound effect on one's soul.
A few years ago I had watched how US & Them became the Classic it is. Someome made this short film & it was fantastic giving the History of the song ...while the song played. I've been looking for it ever since....its not an interview...but it was well made...with love.
Es un placer espiritual escuchar este gran tema que por supuesto trae un air melancholic, abrazos a todos los floydianos!!!
Understated brilliance of epic proportions
Beautiful!
Soberb!!! From Brazil
Simply WONDERFUL !!
stunning in its beauty, starkness and simplicity
goodbye Rick...5 years today...the lights are on but there's no one home...
RIP Rick.x
Chokes me up every time thanks for the upload!
Fantástico! Nunca vai existir mais nada assim! Great!
Very good job.
Congrats, thank you for posting this masterpiece.
I wish there was a piano only version of Marooned by Rick. I could listen to him play all day. His playing fits my mood on most days.
Home. Home again. I like to be here when I can.
J'aime beaucoup ❤
R.I.P Richard Wright
Allways the best who dies first.
Thinking of you.(9.15.2008). The time is gone. The song is over. Thought Id something more to say.
RIP
i did that yesterday here at work like for 4 hours
I think Rick was banned in Pink Floyd, otherwise he could replaced Roger in the compositions. For me the best work he has done is in the hommage to Syd Barrett, Shine on you crazy diamond, where the talent does not reside in Gilmour's solos, but in the opening and closing of this masterpiece. I always get upset when the majority smile when David plays his guitar. "But you didn't listen to the intro ?! ". I can´t help it.
thats why they say pink floyd is a state of mind or an experience that changes on life
The "demo" descriptor is actually incorrect.... this WAS the original Zabriskie Point soundtrack recording of "The Violent Sequence".
Originally planned for Zabriskie Point but this is his personal demo version which was released on the DSOTM immersion set.
Rick.... =')
LA VOZ DE DIOS
originally named "Violent Sequence"
fail that's Zabrinkie Point :)
:')
avaliable on bootleg for years to a point....in a way...
fsc0071 syd barrett died first, making the best dying second technically.
Torrey Dunn You read that whole description just to comment something so damned disrespectful?
Patrick McCutcheon i can see whereyour comin from. richard is my favorite. i doubt i meant that im a mean way. definatly didnt intend to upset anyone.
Torrey Dunn Your whole statement is idiotic and leaves me scratching my head as to how you managed to think that comment would not draw criticism.
Gilmour & Wright are/were Pink Floyd. Not Roger!
All together.......
