I speak for all of us contemporary vinyl collectors when I say we ADORE the ritual- that's the point. Having the physical object, holding it in your hands, admiring the artwork, poring over the liner notes, listening on "the big speakers", it's all part of ACTIVE listening! Cassettes are booming too, among smaller artists who want to offer physical media to their audiences! I collect on both formats, as well as CD and digital- they all have their place in enjoying great music!!!!

I am a contemporary collector, but I have been collecting for 30 years, so perhaps I have been in it longer than many people currently in the game, and maybe with that comes a different point of view. I can’t say I personally LOVE or adore the ritual, rather I tolerate it because that’s what often leads to the best sound. I love the end result.

Wonderful clarifying conversation. I would just like to say that I'm a 74 year old lifelong musician, a former classical pianist who was on a full scholarship who taught myself guitar and played professionally, mostly in Greenwich Village for 21 years. I know that I hear things that few others can hear. When this masterpiece came out, I used to frequent stereo stores trying to find the best speakers I could find for as little as possible, a lot. Virtually every store I went into was playing this album. Incredibly, this damn thing sounded great on EVERYTHING. To this day it amazes me. How can a record sound great on every single speaker? Thanks Donald and Walter, and everyone involved in the creation of this masterpiece. David Crosby's favorite album.

The recent Grundman release of Aja on vinyl is absolutely stunning, I've been listening to the album since I was 15 (so around 35 years and counting) and I was hearing details I've never ever heard before. Fabulous.
The Gaucho release on the other hand, has been nothing but hassle for me. I've had two copies now from The Sound Of Vinyl, and both have had a significant skip at exactly 1 minute in to Babylon Sisters. I suspect a pressing fault, but TSOV deny this is the case.
EDIT: If this was filmed at the same time it was uploaded, I'd just like to add that its good to see Donald back to full fitness again after his recent illness and hospitalisation.

My frame of reference for this statement is Sunken Condos. I hope we get at least one more, PLEASE!! And Donald, please check out Rick Beato and grant him an interview also. P.S. We are looking at Donald in this interview as a nice guy but maybe people don't realize that this guy is the voice of Sooo many great recordings, like Josie, Babylon Sisters , Kid Charlemagne, I mean, and I am not blowing smoke up his ass but do we realize just how great this "old guy" really is??!! He is right up there with the Beatles and I mean that as my sincerest compliment.

Wow! Two takes on Wayne Shorter's solo over Aja. Wish they would release BOTH takes! Thats the best sax solo over and probably the best instrumental solo ever.
The fact that these guys all knew each other meant questions regular people have didnt get asked and a lot of repeat questions did get asked. I think the reason Donald left early was he got bored. Still there were interesting technical descriptions about the mastering of Aja that are interesting to hear about for those who want to know how Steely Dan got their perfect recorded sound.

And I'm a big fan of cutting at 45pm. It's just that in this case, I prefer the AB better. Not in every single area, if you pick it apart, but I enjoy listening to my original more.

That would be a remix, not a remaster, and it would never be the same. It’s impossible to recreate the original 2 track mixdown from the multitrack, no matter how talented the mix engineer is. Doing that would be a disaster for anyone wanting the best version of the original album. It would be incredibly expensive to do that even with digital in the chain. All analogue? Same equipment used at the time? It’s not even realistic even if you’re dreaming. I can see why it’s seems like an option, but unfortunately on a technical level, it can’t even get started.

Pretty interesting! Kind of ironic though, if that's the word, that apart from Bill Schnee's, the audio quality here is so f-ing murky. 🙄

Iv,e been pondering this question for years. Did Donald and Walter ever consider hiring Jaco Pastorius to play on any of the tracks on Aja or Gaucho? I tried to ask this question through Donalds fan club on FB, but the question kept getting sensored and declined?? Thx anyone who knows!😊😊

I was hoping this dull group would expand on arguably the best solo in history. Steve Gadd & Wayne Shorter!

There are only a handful of people in this world for whom I would turn into a blithering idiot if I ever met them. Donald Fagen is one of them. Paul McCartney is another.

Very informative but maybe you chaps should invest in a better internet connection/computer. I love Donald sitting in front of his books and trying to read the titles freezing the picture is impossible.

Sure will be glad when you're done with the Steely Dan releases. Other artists deserve some attention too.
