One of the most sophisticated bands, one of the greatest albums. I love steely Dan and I was born after Gaucho. One could study only them and become a great musician.
I’m 30 years old, recently discovered steely dan and then later I discovered aja. At first I thought their only good songs were reelin’ and do it again. So glad I decided to give Aja a chance. The very first song- black cow, immediately sets the mood and SLAPS and the album only gets better from there, culminating in the incredible Josie.
I was 9 In 1977 I wore my mom’s eight track out. Wore out a vinyl copy also. 1986 Wore out the CD. In five years. Now Downloaded forever. Fantastic work.
Watching the back stories and the stories about the playing/licks/interactions makes watching this almost as fulfilling as hearing the tunes, thank you Mr Beato,
Every song on this album was a gem. The peak of SD's creativity in writing and performances. Have used it a thousand times to help perfect my drumming, especially improving feel and subtle phrasing. Thanks guys.
Whenever I have some kind of new way of listening to music, the test for me is listening the Aja album. It’s like a benchmark. It’s the richest most nuanced thing I can play.
One of the best groups of all time... I say that reserved because tastes vary but musical talent and writing is extraordinary, nearly any real artist would agree
Don and Walter could fly to the far reaches of Siberia and within twenty-four hours of touching down, they’d have the ten best musicians in that part of the world inside a studio, making incredible music. Those guys attracted talent like ants to a picnic.
Chicago may have introduced Jazz-Rock fusion but Steely Dan took it into the Stratosphere ! The “Pretzel Logic, Royal Scam, Aja Era” is My Most Favorite Steel Dan Albums !
1:26 - Steely Dan: the only band who can start recording an album in 1977, take a little over a year to finish it AND still release it IN 1977 LOL Think his timeline was a wee bit off :P
@theivory1 "..Got a case o dyni-mite,(guitar lick) I could hold out here all night.(more guitar) Well, I crossed 'My Old Man' back in Oregon, Don't Take Me Alive!"..
It's a bloody shame they lost a couple 5.1 tracks on aja now there will never be the album aja in dvd audio a sad time in music history no aja in 24bit 96 kHz 5.1....
As great an album as Aja is, I think the follow-up - Gaucho - is just as good, and probably better. I've no idea why that record doesn't get more acclaim....
That is Dennis Chambers I recognize that hat anywhere. ALSO That is NOT Benard's set up. Tell me how many times have you seen Benard play on more than a 5 piece kit? Yet alone a Pearl kit. I'll wait...
As a guitarist I can say JOSIE is the easiest to play...maybe that's why they love playing it. Steely Dan music is great no doubt but the hype of what they allegedly went through,in the studio, isn't the Mark of greatness. Could it be the LACK of it...or just micromanagement that borders on the anal.
Is the young guitarist seen in many of these Steely Dan studio videos the same guy who now plays with The Eagles and does a lot of the guitar solos from their old work? Looks like the same guy. A really phenomenal player. Anyone know?
Exactly! Donald Fagen has such a great, dry sense of humor and observations. What a genius.

True!
No doubt.. dynamics, melody, groove, and that intangible factor.. they had it all. Long live the Dan
😮😮😮

Aja was probably their most solid record. Its almost like a collection of "greatest hits"
I was 9 In 1977
I wore my mom’s eight track out.
Wore out a vinyl copy also.
1986 Wore out the CD. In five years.

Fantastic work.
Man, a CD player in '86! I didn't know anyone in real life with a CD player until like '91 at the earliest 😂 Didn't get mine until '94
Nothing sounds better than vinyl. Is the original sound flavor and feeling
@@soulchorea Bought mine 1989. The LP passed away.
Watching the back stories and the stories about the playing/licks/interactions makes watching this almost as fulfilling as hearing the tunes, thank you Mr Beato,
This is a truly classic album. Thanks for putting this up, the musicianship is fantastic!
I bought this album in 1977 and I played with earphones and feeding my son at the same time especially Deacon Blues 😊
LoVe the Chuck Rainey ! AJA an absolute Classic !!
Every song on this album was a gem. The peak of SD's creativity in writing and performances. Have used it a thousand times to help perfect my drumming, especially improving feel and subtle phrasing. Thanks guys.
I so appreciate all the hard work that goes into producing this ART. Sounds great... thank you to everyone that brought this to my ears.
All I can stomach in life and that they threw Ian Dury in this makes it even stronger...Aja was an industry standard
They got the right balance musically with Aja which makes it a classic album.
Steely Dan proves that nobody is bigger than the music. The music gods always wanted it that way.
I enjoy The Classic Album series.Aja is my favourite.
Whenever I have some kind of new way of listening to music, the test for me is listening the Aja album. It’s like a benchmark. It’s the richest most nuanced thing I can play.

Nice to watch world class craftsmanship in 250p. A juxtaposition in the tradition of Steely Dan. They would definitely love it too.
Aja is my favorite record but I do love all their work.
Dude, Donald, playing stance is very Stevie Wonder.
Josie, love that track !
Aja is their best LP but I do love 'Kid Charlemagne' from 'The Royal Scam' which is their best song!
Aja is a masterpiece!
Time out of mind also. Don’t forget
@@TJ_CrayonBeltFeeder Mark Knopfler plays on that!
More than 20 years later and Jon Herrington is still Fagen's primary guitarist.
He's good!
What a good feel to see IAN DURY again. Hit me, Reasons. What a great remebrence
Steely Dan is in my top 5 favorite bands ever and Donald’s “Night Fly” is a top 10 album.
Their music is unlike anything else in the best way.
Don and Walter could fly to the far reaches of Siberia and within twenty-four hours of touching down, they’d have the ten best musicians in that part of the world inside a studio, making incredible music. Those guys attracted talent like ants to a picnic.
Would Probably include Leonid & Friends, from Russia, check them out!
The process of making this album is like painting with fractions
Chicago may have introduced Jazz-Rock fusion but Steely Dan took it into the Stratosphere ! The “Pretzel Logic, Royal Scam, Aja Era” is My Most Favorite Steel Dan Albums !
& Leonid & Friends covers Chicago, Blood Sweat & Tears, & more, better than originals!
Great show, however... :
1. No mention of "I Got The News"?
2. No mention of Steve Gadd's classic drum solo at the end of "Aja"?
Right?..."Broadway duchess, darling if you, only knew!" -Blows me away every time when McDonald slices into that minor bridge.
@stellagranos72 Yeah, what'sup with that?
Donald Fagan kind of reminds me of Stephen Hawking.
RIP Walter!
I love this album, love this music4
Who are the Hollywood rangers set they mentioned while at the mixer?
Imagine a Frank Zappa recording session if the musicians found Steely Dan sessions strenuous.
1:26 - Steely Dan: the only band who can start recording an album in 1977, take a little over a year to finish it AND still release it IN 1977 LOL
Think his timeline was a wee bit off :P
He's always been a little shaky on details like that.
Released in 77..
Thanx so much for the post!!
Love that
Title track⚡
Love all the trax!

Love these guys
Fascinating !
Be at peace Donald---you done good.
What year was this made?
1977.
Look at those buttons lol love to see a studio or sing for fun .
8:52 Ian nails it!
Thank you. It's priceless. ♥
Agreed on Aja but I'd pick Peg as their best song.
where i can find this in hd ?
Wow wow wow!
what is your source?
I'm currently in Asia... and I'm BLASTING Aja...
This comment really deserved like 10k likes. Sorry for the delay.
My old man didn’t like them, so I was probably 20 before I really heard them and they took hold. Somehow That was 30 years ago.
@theivory1 "..Got a case o dyni-mite,(guitar lick)
I could hold out here all night.(more guitar)
Well, I crossed 'My Old Man' back in Oregon, Don't Take Me Alive!"..
Holy crap Dennis Chambers at 3:39!
what happened to the version with the japanese subtitles lol
I love em but damn is those Dan boys dorks!
More like geniuses.
Flowerdoodle2 Yeah, “they’re” dorks....
Nobody slaps dat bass like dorks.
Genius dorks.
It's a bloody shame they lost a couple 5.1 tracks on aja now there will never be the album aja in dvd audio a sad time in music history no aja in 24bit 96 kHz 5.1....
Dark hair and glasses? Looks like a young version of their current guitarist jon Herington.
..Who is a master!
Does anyone know who the gent playing Rhodes in this video is?
Todd Boyer Are you talking about Donald Fagen?
No, I know who Donald is, and he's playing the Grand, I'm referring to the black gent at the Rhodes.
@@Dartman6someone named him in a comment elsewhere.
@@bradlyscotunes9156 I've found out since I asked the question that the gent is Paul Griffin who also played on some Steely Dan recordings.
stripped down to guitar and bass at 4:30!
FYI I blocked 1945tekecaster for his waste of space comments ;-)
Then thank the heavens for a little pretension if this is the result.
Miss my TV on no cable company let's you get to a 1000 then I go to community counseling for help Joyce Workman that died. Could not either.
REMEMBER DAVID PALMER?
YEAH ME NEITHER
Stop YELLING! Don't need all caps!

Yes
Really bad sound and video quality here. Better checking out the original UK documentary this is taken from! Disappointing.

Could it be that YOU border on the anal..?
I was surprised that the opening lick on Josie is super easy to play!
Love the band but not the hype.
No audio, lame
No, you're lame. The audio is fine.
