  • Hi Folks! As winter begins to near its end this becomes an excellent time to transplant or add new plants to your gardens. This week we are planting some new rhubarb plants in an area that gets dappled sun/shade. This is an area we wanted to get some plants into that could provide an interesting texture to the landscape and provide something great to eat too! Join us as we get these new plants in the ground.

I found this handwritten recipe in an old book. No directions really, just the ingredients. But man, oh man, is it ever good! I’ve converted many a rhubarb hater with it. It comes out like a custard. Heavenly!
    Rhubarb Pie
    3 cups fresh rhubarb, chopped
    3 eggs, well beaten
    3 Tbsp flour
1 ½ cups sugar (I usually reduce this a bit and it’s still plenty sweet)
¾ tsp nutmeg (I sometimes substitute fresh lemon verbena in the summer)
    1 Tbsp butter
    Place in uncooked pie crust.
Bake at 450° for 10 minutes. Reduce heat to 350° for 30 minutes.

I make a rhubarb sauce that I really enjoy.
    Rhubarb Sauce
    1/3 C Sugar
    1/4 C Water
    2 C Rhubarb
    1/8 tsp Nutmeg
    1 tsp Lemon Zest
In a saucepan, bring sugar and water to a boil. Add rhubarb; cook and stir until rhubarb is tender and mixture is slightly thickened, 5-10 minutes. Remove from the heat; stir in lemon zest and nutmeg. Run an immersion blender through it for a smoother sauce if desired.
Can be used in place of pancake syrup or on ice cream.

I'm on Denise's team. But I did learn something about rhubarb and when to pick. I had a rhubarb plant that grew over my sidewalk in the back yard. My neighbor next door came over one day and hacked the plant in half and took all those stalks. No she didn't ask and she had to do it when I was gone because is was right by my sliding glass door in the back yard. I'm glad I moved the next year.

Hey, thanks for being on my side.😊. I am going to give all recipes for rhubarb a try and see if I like it. Someone suggested rhubarb lemonade which sounds delish. What a story of your neighbor. I guess we all have a weird moment with our neighbors. Thanks for watching.

Try a young stalk, peel it to cut back the tartness, then dip it in sugar and take a bite.
