I used to play Battletoads in Battlemaniacs hoping that "the next stage will go back to a beat 'em up style. I know it." but it never did. If they had kept the style the same as Stage 1 and 2 it would be a classic. RIP.
I played Battletoads Double Dragon all the time with my mom as a kid. It was one of our favorite SNES games. We never tried the "B" setting, that would have made it a lot easier!
I just received my SNES mini yesterday (I know, about 8 months late...). Thank god for this channel! I'm just watching a ton of your videos and making lists of games to add to the adorable, little console. Thank you!!!
Battletoads & Double Dragon is one of the best SNES games ever, imo. It's a LOT of fun especially in co-op, there's really good variety with levels and styles, and the game is full of humor as well. Also, its soundtrack is superb. Seriously, it's one of the best OSTs in the SNES and that's saying something! Don't believe me? Look up the soundtrack and listen to the tracks. So atmospheric, cool, pretty, catchy. It's great.
Player mode A (where you can hit each other / friendly fire) is suuuuper fun when playing with a buddy! I remember laughing my ass of nonstop because we would accidentally boot each other off the screen and get so angry, but it was all in good fun and we'd end up cracking up. God I miss those days :D
On the NES version of Battletoads/Double Dragon, my brothers and I loved setting the game to You Can Hit Each Other mode and focusing on killing each other, with the enemies as mere distractions. Those were good days.
@@koteynikoi-kotei9301same! I wanted a beat em up not random stages in each level. Like damn can I fight again? I felt the same about the earthworm Jim games.

The hardest level on all the battletoads games is the race against the portal thing. That is the level I could never get past on all the games. Turbo tunnels, snake pits all easy
I swear I'm the only person I've ever known who's just... never had a problem with the Turbo Tunnel, in either the original game OR Battlemaniacs. It's the snake level that always gets me! That's almost always where I get my Game Over, in both titles. I also really enjoy the mix of level types -- I specifically prefer original Battletoads AND Battlemaniacs to Battletoads & Double Dragon because there's a greater variety of level designs. It's not ALL beat-em-ups, but constantly changing from one gameplay type to another. That's super rad, and really fun for me! In the original Battletoads, it was always the ice stage I really looked forward to the most -- though that underwater stage with the tubes and the gears that would chase you was also super cool, and both the waveboard and jet stages were like the Turbo Tunnel but even better. Too bad I had so much trouble getting to those latter few stages consistently thanks to that stupid-ass snake stage! ;) I love the snake stage in concept, and the NES game's version of it was much easier than Battlemaniacs' (which i don't think I've ever actually beaten!), but it's just SO DAMN HARD...
@@ti-guylesbarniques556 i never really tried to get that far in battlemaniacs because it's basically a remake that's missing almost half the levels. so i've just started playing the nes version lately. the snes version looks so nice, wish they would have kept all the levels or just had completely unique levels.
@@Jack_80 It's pretty much a repacking of half the levels of the NES version, true. It looked nice, but a lot of the charm was missing for me, especially the music. The NES game soundtrack is crazy good. Battlemaniac had like one good track I can think of and even then it's not on par.
I used to play Battlemaniacs with my cousins every new year's eve around 3 or 4 years straight, only got after the Turbo Tunnel once. Either way very fun, never gets old.
After almost 23 years I should try to beat the Battlemaniacs game, once again. Used to beat it without using a single continue. Thanks for this remind video ;)
I used to play it on a daily basis until I memorized every jump and turn. I even could play it through losing only 1 life on the whole game, and only trying to get more lives at the second stage. I dont think I can do it anymore, though.
Regarding the Turbo Tunnel, isn't a stage that requires a lot of memorization, in a game with limited continues, better to be early than late? At least you can get more reps in to practice if you don't have to overcome so many obstacles first. Just a thought.
Man I just found your channel and every single video I have watched so far I totally agree with your opinions on every review you have done. I loved battletoads & double dragon when I was a kid. Still trying to find a copy for cheap to play again.
The Battletoads Arcade is amazing. I love how it perfectly captured the "edgy ninja turtles" aesthetic complete with blood and gore and stuff it was great. The only other time Battletoads has been done justice after the NES game is in the Killer Instinct cameos.
I wonder how many people laughed that idea when you first brought that up and how you are laughing back at them now with the inclusion of banjo and kazooie as well as the Minecraft fighters which apparently is owned by Microsoft even though that's on all platforms
That's so wild you said that.. I was thinking the other day how there is too many unnecessary characters in SSB Not that it's not fun to have a huge selection screen, but the first 2 or 3 Smash Bros had more popular characters which was the whole point. But recently I just think the characters are flooded with not needed lesser known characters. But having BATTLETOADS?!! Genius Sir.. You my friend have just officially WON 2020 lmaooo
I hated Battlemaniacs but the one with Double Dragon was great. I always found that spaceship part real hard though. I don't know if it's like that in other game but in Double Dragon 2, if you choose mode A and you kill the other player, you get to steal his life. It's a great way to gain more life if playing solo.
I was enjoying battletoads and double dragon and thought it was pretty good UNTIL I got to the spaceship level with a machine gun mid boss that I could not even fucking hit. I practiced with states and just kept getting gunned down. Then it reminded me that this game contained typical battletoads bullshit. The bosses should atleast have some kind of pattern. It seems you have to pull some type of bullshit to cheap out the bosses.

What's crazy is that Battletoads in Battlemaniacs was the easiest to me although Battletoads and Double Dragon is still my fave. BT&DD got harder to me after the 3rd stage because of the annoying ship controls and tougher enemies. Battletoads NES is Battletoads NES. I may have gotten past the snake level once.
Should mention that in Battletoads/Double Dragon, Billy and Jimmy's jump kick makes the beat-em-up levels WAY easier. It's essentially an extra difficulty setting: play as the humans or play as the toads. Heh, I wish my dad had a jump kick attack. It would have made it much easier for him fighting off a whole herd of stampeding wildebeests that one day at the gorge....
"A mode" was in the original double dragon for nes so that you can fight each other (ignore the inital cpu baddies) and see who wins. I imagine that's why here as well
Battletoads and double dragon is definitely worth playing. But for Battlemaniacs it depends on what level of challenge your looking for. In my opinion that hacksaw level alone (I think it's level 5) almost makes the whole game harder than battletoads for nes. Also the turbo tunnel was a very cool level in both games. I think it's unique amongst all levels in video game history and it sure does feel satisfying when you finally beat it.
I remember playing Battletoads in Battlemaniacs back in the day and I couldn’t get past the Turbo Tunnels. Very hard. As for Battletoads/Double Dragon, I wish I played the whole game without cheat codes.
The NES version is the best. The fluidity of the controls and the movement of the game is just better. Also the sound isn't all muffled and synthesized
A LOVE LETTER IN DEFENCE OF BATTLETOADS IN BATTLEMANIACS lol Battlemaniacs is a remake of the NES game indeed but for those who never played the NES version, it's a completely fresh, awesome and most impressive game ! Yes of course you would expect that the beat'em all gameplay would be a little more proeminent after level 1, but at the same time, once you realize that the ambition of the game is precisely to make you experience a different and exciting gameplay for each level, you understand you're playing a very unique (and non-repetitive) game for once ! Then you could say that the game is hard. Well yeah, sure. But it's not insanely hard ! With a little practice, it's really rewarding to master the entire game, especially on two players mode ! This is what we call a "challenging game", and that's really a part of its charm ! And it's not challenging because the controls are broken or the difficulty is so cruelly unbalanced that your victory reposes on only shear luck ! There's a lot of "die and retry" sure, but then again it's a game you CAN master ! And it's particularly thrilling when you do, because you can anticipate these intense moments of action and tension when, for example, you get at the ending of level 2 (with the sudden speed up between the narrowing spikes !) or the ending of level 3 (when the walls are suddenly not blinking and forcing you to an extreme death-slalom !) or even in the middle of level 4 (when your speed and your timing has to be perfect to slide on ice and catch the right snake at the right time !) I mean, it's really not the routine of the beat'em all, when you just get more and more stronger opponents and you just beat them again and again. Here everything is well-thought out to give you an intense experience of diverse kinds of gaming ! I would nuance a little bit by saying that the last level is not the most inspired, probably the biggest weaknes of the game for me after so many great levels. But on the other hand, the bonus stage with the keels is AWESOME. I really don't get why "snes drunk" is so dismissive while talking about it. It's fast, it's tense, the music is amazing and it's a chance to get some extra lifes before getting to the more challenging levels ! As for the "2 players mode A", I don't get why it is pointed out as a flaw, I mean "why not ??!" At least you can choose to use it or not ! Personnaly, I prefer "mode B" because it's already an enough challenging game as it is, but if you're starting to master the game and want another layer of difficulty, this is great ! Besides, "mode A" is a lot of fun ! As said in the comments, it is fun when you can hit your buddy once in a while (accidentally or not 😎), or even when you're suddenly making a big mess for not paying enough attention to your surroundings ! Finally, the rock soundtrack is REALLY awesome and the cartoony graphics are among the best ones at the time ! So as I'm concerned, Battlemaniacs is probably in my top 10 games for the SNES, and it should be better known among the aficionados of action games on this console.
To be fully honest, one little cheatcode that can indeed improves your experience of the game is : During the "tradewest presents" at the very beginning of the game, press and hold A, B, and Down, then press Start. It will give you 5 lives (instead of 3) and 5 continues (instead of 3, I think) it helps a lot, I admit 😉
He called one of the Double Dragon guys "Sid" when the screen said "Jimmy" I don't bring it up to "own" him or harp on him at all but I am legit curious if there's an obvious (to somebody) reason why that would happen? I only played the first double dragon and it's been 15-20 years since I played it...
I just realized I've never played a Battletoads game of any kind. Same goes for the NES Batman. I guess those came out just after the 16-bit consoles from Sega & NEC came out.
that hoverbike level on the genesis is annoying. when you have to jump over the 3 walls in a row, it's so much more awkward to time because it makes you jump twice as long as in the nes version, but the walls seem to come at the same rate. idk, the genesis version looks a bit nicer, but i prefer the style and feel of the nes version. the snes version would be much better if they didn't cut out nearly half the levels.
the music and graphics in this game are so good. It is hard though. I never could beat the race against the portal thing. Not in nes or this one it always always catches me they dont make games like this anymore for better or for worse.
I loved the fact that you could hit the other player. My brother and I would play with Game Genie and infinite lives/energy and just crack ourselves up sabotaging the other guy.
Currently have Battletoads and Double Dragon on cartridge for Snes. Trying to beat it by yourself sucks. My hands are done by the space ship level. Get a friend who is willing to help.
Battlemaniacs is great and brings the difficulty without the game being too long. I always find myself using warps in the original because there are so many stages.
I never played Battletoads and Double Dragon, so I can't give my opinion on that. I have played and beaten Battlemaniacs, though, and I have to disagree with the final part of the video. If you have to choose between the NES and SNES versions of Battletoads, play the SNES version. It's still difficult, but it's less cheap than the NES version, prettier, the two bonus levels allow you to stock up on extra lives, and if you feel like some grinding, juggling those bugs in the second stage can net you the max amount of lives. Also, if you have a slow motion controller, you can make the last part of the speeder bike stage easier.
Fans made those crossover games SNES Drunk imagined. Knights and Dragons combine Knights of the Round with Dungeons and Dragons. Final Fights LNS combines Final Fight with Street Fighter and other Capcom beat'em ups.
Idk if it's just me, but I prefer the Sega version of Battletoads and Double Dragon. The controls feel smoother and the music has a deeper feel to it. I remember playing the SNES version, and the enemies SWARM you. In the Sega version, it's still tough but seems more fair. Again, it could just be me.
Hey i hope you read the comments. I have some Games, that i would like to recommend for you to review Legend (from Arcade Zone) the 7th Saga EVO Search for Eden Joe and Mac 1,2,3 Star Wars Trilogy Metal Marines Parodius 1,2,3 Thanks in Advance and Greetings from Germany!
Battlemaniacs always felt like it was a shortened version of the NES Battletoads. Plus, Battlemaniacs didnt really any fist-fight levels so it never made full use of the characters' fighting capabilities. It was a disappointment in general to say the very least.
I personally, totally disliked the sNES version ... because they took out things that where good ... and replaced them with things that where boring, like that first boss. How on earth can one compare that boring Stonepig to the ingenuity of fighting a boss through his eyes ... Yes most of those bosses in the original Battletoads where kinda easy(just dash-tackle most of them), but the level design was crazy back in the day. I mean in each level you had to do something different then in the level prior. That was supercool back then, when most games(like the Double Dragon games) just gave you one thing to do, bash bad guys ... and that with one set of moves that never changes in the whole game. Battle Toads and Double Dragon was super cool too, there are even nowadays not allot mashups like that(the only other come to mind is the SNK VS Street Fighter/Capcom games). Though somewhat short(when compared to Battle Toads) it was still a blast to play.
I greatly prefer the graphics in Battletoads & Double Dragon... the nes style pixelart looks great with an enhanced palette, and the sprites in Battlemaniacs are so big that the gameplay suffers for it.
I played both recently and the Genesis version of Battletoads & Double Dragon is just better, mainly because it controls/feels nicer and the enemy AI isn't brutal.
The beating each other up mode was what me and my bro loved most. Had we known we woulda gotten this back in the day. To us it was just a beat em up that had some other enemies you had to kill and we would have to put our fight on hold to beat bosses. We used it to resolve some disputes too. Hours of fun. Save us beating each other up in real life.
I used to play Battletoads in Battlemaniacs hoping that "the next stage will go back to a beat 'em up style. I know it." but it never did.

To be fully honest, one little cheatcode that can indeed improves your experience of the game is :
During the "tradewest presents" at the very beginning of the game, press and hold A, B, and Down, then press Start.
It will give you 5 lives (instead of 3) and 5 continues (instead of 3, I think)
it helps a lot, I admit 😉
I wish BattleToads had made a Contra collab like they did with Double Dragons.
What developer made the mash-up game, the Double Dragon team? (Technos)
I still prefer the genesis version of battletoads.
Jay_Slash_DRM
They are mostly rehash of the nes battletoads games.
In my opinion a great remake...
...except the punch and kick sounds, they are WEAK.
that hoverbike level on the genesis is annoying. when you have to jump over the 3 walls in a row, it's so much more awkward to time because it makes you jump twice as long as in the nes version, but the walls seem to come at the same rate. idk, the genesis version looks a bit nicer, but i prefer the style and feel of the nes version.
the snes version would be much better if they didn't cut out nearly half the levels.
the music and graphics in this game are so good. It is hard though. I never could beat the race against the portal thing. Not in nes or this one it always always catches me
they dont make games like this anymore for better or for worse.
Que maravilla de juegos en aquella década, muy buenos recuerdos junto al snes
Nes version of Battletoads & Double Dragon is one of the best Nes games of all time
I loved the fact that you could hit the other player.
Bsttletoads and Double Dragon always seemed like an odd pair up to me.
It happened because Tradewest had the rights to both at the time, and they wanted a quick cash-in on both properties before the licenses expired.
Billy and Jimmy
+Brian Newhard The Final Fight part of my brain disagrees
don't you mean, BIMMY and Jimmy
Who the hell is Bimmy? It's not even a real name!
Bimmy and Jilly
Never had the patience to get past the first level...and I like the smaller sprite scheme on the nes.
I did manage to beat battlemaniacs that one time, but YEARS ago!
2:50 - Billy and....What-now..??
Both games are really great and awesome. Thanks for the upload :)
They should make a Double Dragon/Final Fight crossover someday; maybe Linda and Poison could be friends!
The SNES Battletoads definitely benefit the most from better sound. So much more satisfying hit sounds, rocking music, etc.
Again, it could just be me.

zackdufois I will definitely get to 7th Saga and EVO sometime, I can guarantee that. The others I'll put on the list.
I passed....battlemaniacs
...but double dragon and battletoads i just could not
Why didn't you tell me "Thanks for watching and I hope you have a great rest of your day"? I feel played.... like your video games...
Battletoads and Double Dragon was the only one I've managed to beat solo.
Huzzah! Excellent review *****!
***** Thanks
I want a battle toads game made like DMC or Bayonetta
I play this game solo with Sid!
I love both games, it prefer Battletoads and Double Dragon. The intro is excellent.
You can play mods and hacks of Final Fight with Street Fighter characters
I use to rock turbo tunnel
That fuckin turbo tunnel
I remember rage quitting the jumping level so many times
