Orcas Preying On Dolphins (CAUGHT ON DRONE)

- Footage of Orcas preying on dolphin caught on the drone! Late in the afternoon on 6-29-19 during a Dana Wharf whale watching trip off the coast of San Clemente, CA. Our passengers on the Sum Fun with captain Brian Woolley had a front-row seat to this encounter. 3 ETP Orcas pursuing common dolphins, they had corralled a common dolphin and her baby, they separated the mom from the baby. The screams of our passengers say it all we were rooting for the baby to get away but the little guy is no match for the APEX predator! We warn you that this video is graphic may not be intended for children to watch. As always it looks like the Orcas are playing with the dolphins like a game of chase, but Orcas play to win!
-
The drone video was taken by Matt Larmand, also we want to thanks Oceanside Whale Watching for finding these Orcas in the first place!

Dana Wharf is the premier year-round whale watching company in Dana Point. Beginning in 1971 we are the pioneer of whale watching adventures in Orange County, California.
We interact with over 1000 whales during the Gray whale migration in the winter and view hundreds of 90 feet Blue whales in the summer. Sightings of Orca, Humpback, Sperm and Finback Whales are not uncommon.
In addition to whales, thousands of dolphins, sea lions, seafaring birds, and even sharks are found year-round in our waters, so we always have plenty of wildlife to see.

At least the baby dolphin fight to survive like a hero...rest in peace baby...
What’s crazy is even the baby dolphin is probably about 4-5 feet long, and still looks like a minnow next to the Orcas.
The bigger one never give up defending the smaller ones by confusing the orcas
That's the mother dolphin and the smaller ones were her babies.
I've always known orcas to be expert hunters. But due to their size I always had a hard time imagining how they could catch up to dolphins and seals. This footage gave me a chilling visual how fast they are even with how much bigger they are.
They are slower, but that was a baby. Notice the large dolphin never ran away. It might have been the mother...
Orcas can't dive deep, either, whereas dolphins can dive *Incredibly deep*.
Tragoudistros.MPH- i just looked up dolphin top speed and orca top speed and it looks like orcas are actually much faster.
Maybe not as nimble though
I'm curious how much of this might have been sport for the orca as well as training

Still I find Dolphins are very hard to prey:) They can run...even the babies are born Usain Bolt
Which is why orcas ambush them or they chase them over open sea like wolves do deer. Hunting a smaller version yourself would be extremely difficult. Dolphins are just as smart and much faster than orcas but orcas have developed techniques to offset their quick movements. Like boxing timing negates speed. So they have to pick their shots or the hunt is pretty much over.
@@dwanrobinson if dolphins are faster, they just need to swim straight.
God that mama dolphin would have lived but she refused to leave her calf to be eaten. Talk about a dedicated parent so sad
LITERALLY just had this video loop off the beat alone.. then you got killer whales and dolphins in synchrony while giving us the end of a story . brilliant
It's hilarious how 3 gigantic predators were so committed in chasing down a tiny baby dolphin that is like a single Cheetos stick for us.
What is up with the screaming in this?
The music makes me feel like I’m being chased to
From 1:20 onwards:
Baby dolphin is pushed away from boat and away from mother by 1 killer whale as 2 decide to hold up the mother by the boat. There was one killer whale that was bigger than the other 2 by a bit(imo) it has a pronounced white patch behind the dorsal fin and tail on top of its body. Both senior orcas have big white patches though so it gets tricky.
The 2 holding by the boat take off to chase baby and - complete speculation here- the mother dolphin goes quiet to hear “speaking” going under water to listen where baby went and is going.
There’s a lull while camera finds the action and mother isn’t “herded”. I’d imagine while camera is searching, the one killer is being loud and the other 2 come silent and very quickly to try and sneak attack the young one.
Regardless, once camera comes back the mother dolphin sees a chance and goes to the right of the orca formation- probably calling to her baby. Under water it is loud at this point. The baby is also on the right of the orca formation, and you can see the killer whale farthest to the right(the juvenile orca, feint to cut off the reconnection at 1minute 42 seconds. It’s a small move but was important. Kinda like turning his body. Like a “nah not that way”.
Right after that, you see the mother dolphin was right behind and baby dolphin wanted to go right. In the meantime the center killer lunges for baby dolphin and it’s forced to the left.
1 minute 47 seconds- The real attack is on now.
If you keep your eye on the juvenile killer whale, it switches positions to the left side of the formation. He turns his body sideways to make a barrier and set up an angle of better probability for the attacking whale. The baby dolphin won’t swim toward the white stomach but can’t go right either.
1 minute 55 seconds- middle/ big killer whale releases a sound/yell/shriek along with a burst of speed... can see the bubbles! pushing the young one away and left, towards the white stomach of the juvenile. The killer that was covering the right side of the formation, switches middle, once it’s sure baby is going to the left, while the center killer and the bubbles continue forward, taking up the right side of the formation. The attacking orca mistimes the push. Fascinating to think maybe the bubble screen also somehow aided the charging whale like a “smoke screen” but idk. Regardless the whale that charged the baby missed.
2 minutes 3 seconds- The young killer whale completely whiffs, somewhat lazily from inexperience. He doesn’t cover the center. I think if it was more experienced the hunt is over but baby makes it through.
2minutes 10 second - Mama dolphin ain’t having it and decides it’s time to risk life and limb. The 2nd orca chases hard while the youngest orca follows. Baby dolphin dodges both, and comes back towards mama dolphin, but the big killer whale was between mother and baby, cutting off a reconnection.
2 minutes 13 seconds- you can see the biggest orca do another acoustic attack or something- another bubble trail. This stops baby from going behind her. Mama dolphin is gets desperate coming in dangerously and distracts by diving down. They do link up briefly, but the big killer gets fierce and then chases mama dolphin aggressively (not sure)
while 2nd orca goes all in on the baby. I believe juvenile has another half hearted miss too. Not sure.
2 minutes 47 seconds- 2nd orca(?) is alone in pursuit, juvenile....somewhere. Mama dolphin swoops in distracting the solo orca, while one that chased her away previously comes back from out of screen, but goes for baby dolphin. Jumping to force it down? Mama and baby link up briefly. Young killer gets some redemption by chasing them(2 minutes 48 second briefly and disappears out of screen) as big killer comes around and joins. Big killer takes the lead and separates them for good at 2 minutes 52 seconds
Now they are by the boat- which brings me to my biggest speculation yet. I started the commentary at 1:20 because at this time by the boat the 2 killers herded the mother and she did not want to go around or under the boat! She waited until the 2 left and then came around the boat behind them. Once they get back to the boat at the end, you can see the mama dolphin is still the same way. She knows the young one needs to stay in open water. Idk what happens for sure but it looks like the young one tries to get around both the 3 killers and a boat and probably thinks to boat will help. The baby can’t go left or right or straight(in it’s young mind) so goes down and tries to do an 180 away....basically ending the chase because the baby has less locations to come up to surface for air. Perhaps the white hull of the boat was too much like the bubble attack and white stomach of the juvenile at 1 minute 47 seconds. Who knows. But I do see multiple strategies to hunt here for sure! And there was a whale leading the acoustical attacks/bubble screens- imo. Fascinating! Sorry for the errors can’t tell the big ones apart sometimes.
I used to fish on the Sum Fun and the Clemente when I was a kid, I'm 67 now. The owner at the time, Mr. Hansen was our next door neighbor.
Great footage!! Too bad for the sound though.
Yes no crazy sound
Simple, turn it off. 🙄
Wow, great footage.
To the people complaining about the sound: TURN IT OFF, or don't watch. It isn't hard, people. 🙄
Outstanding job. Great video and good music. Felt like I was there! A+.
That kid and mom is both heck of a fighter!
There are two types of killer whales. Some are hunters for large prey, such as fur seals, dolphins and whales. Others feed exclusively on fish. These subspecies do not even interbreed with each other, apparently due to a different lifestyle. Some are real sadistic hunters, others are peaceful fish-eaters. I like the latter more.
Transient and resident orcas
Like chimps and bonobos
What about eating fish is more peaceful than eating a seal? It's silly to judge animals by human standards.
@@pCeLobster seals are way smarter and more complex than fish
Not too peaceful if you happen to be a fish.
that baby did good in outmaneuvering the orcas for some time... still sad he got eaten tho. also the mom really never left her calf until after she knew it was eaten. at least the mom lived.
The baby dolphin did well tho in running for his life😓

That was incredible!
dont know why everybody hates the sound? I freaking love it! Perfect shots of the perfect nature out there.
Great footage! Looked like they were targeting the young dolphin!
What’s with the screaming?
Very difficult to watch cause it looks like they were chasing baby dolphins and the mother was trying to divert the orcas. Felt bad for the little kids screaming in the backyard. They’ll be have nightmares for some time.
Your both Idiots! The people and kids that are on this “Whale Watching Boat” were all cheering for the Orcas. Not screaming for the dolphins to get away so your completely incorrect about your assumption. Further more, Orcas are not monsters and it was an adult Dolphin that they were chasing and that’s how they eat to survive. So there is nothing sad or difficult to watch in this video. It’s like a Lion eating a Gazelle. Same Principal. Same survival skills. So grow up people!
@@richardchandler3820 Nope, they were hunting the juvenile dolphin that was accompanied by its mother, if you can't see that in the video, you are blind. Most predators hunt the young of other animals, which are easier catchable prey.
@@richardchandler3820 The same principle applies if you're being chased and devoured by a Grizzly or a pride of lions.

Amazing footage i was actually at full att ....no wonder sharks are terrified of orcas and sometimes dolphins too
Man being a nature lover I respect all animals and there way of life but always find it hard to see dolphins getting killed by orcas
Yep, they’re basically cousins due to them being in the same family
Hard to watch orcas kill anything. The aquatic versions of humans. These things tend to find new ways to kill their prey and they attack humpback whales for fun. I didn't even know they had fun until I watched that.
Well everything's gotta eat something unfortunately life isn't free we all have to take life in order to live ourselves that's just the way things are
The same way family hate their own n kill their own
How do you feel about porpoises being killed and tossed about like play-things by dolphins? It happens. Do a youtube search. Predators predate. It's life.
The majority of those dolphins were babies :( ! This is some insane footage! I’ve never seen anything quite like it ~
there was only one baby and its mother in the footage
for apex predator, the orca actually doesn’t easily catch the dolphin. you can see there’s still successful coordination between the dolphins to outmaneuver the killer whales
Hey, I thought we were family!
amazing how the drone picks up the humans talking. Also yes sound is looped.
Nice footage 👍
The speed they all move at times . This was heart breaking but very intresting
going after the baby dolphin and the mother is frantic. heartbreaking!
really good footage...gj
Wow! Never realized how fast orcas can be!
Truly impressive, amazing agility despite their size. They're the apex predator of the ocean, no doubt.
And with little effort
Boat full of whiny spectators.
They are there to see them hunt and then bitch about it.
Stupid sound editing.
I see fishermen, dolphins and orcas chasing game fish.
P.S.
Orcas are big dolphins, same family.
It seems mother dolphin is trying to save the baby, after getting the prey orcas play with it for fun and then eat it
Yeah.. and the dolphins were successfully separated from their pack.. if only the pack were there, the orca might not have a chance
You would see blood if they ate it. They caught it twice but she got away. Once she reunited with her mother it's all over. They both escaped. If you notice the orcas are still trying to give chase but are too tired.
They're not playing with it , they are tenderize it.
@Zubair Mohd Orcas move their prey around to practice their hunting skills, they don't play with it, nor kill them for fun. Bottlenoses do something worst to porpoises, but don't eat the porpoises, unlike what orcas do(eat them, and the porpoise).
They play with all their preys like seals and dolphins before killing them and eating u can see orca attacks on humans and trainers aswel

Easier to catch. Plus Orcas love to “play” with their food. Usually to train their own young on how to hunt (I saw at least one juvenile Orca).

That’s it I wanna see this in person
I did in the Sea of Cortez! They eat the entire dolphin except for the lungs and bronchial tube which ends up floating on the surface of the water in a pool of blood.
Why do the dolphins double back toward the orcas?
The orcas are chasing the baby and the mom doesn’t want to leave it so she’s trying to get to her baby who is swimming for it’s life, even at the very end when you look closely and see the baby dolphin in the orcas mouth, the mom was to the right of the screen following them.
They left the mother dolphin alone
She is a much harder prey and they worked hard to get the kid already.
Look how they are passing their catch around under water to drown it.
