Why Benedict Arnold Was An American Hero (And Still A Traitor) - Hilarious Helmet History

  • Sure, Benedict Arnold is a traitor but he was also an American hero! And you'd probably become a Benedict Arnold too if you were underpaid, constantly skipped for promotions, and had the world's worst bosses and co-workers, all while pretty much ensuring America didn't lose the war as soon as it started.

    If Arnold had died at Saratoga, he would be remembered as one of America's greatest heroes. Just another "what if..." example in the long parade of history !

    The simple fact is, we would have lost the war if it weren't for Arnold. But that's part of what made his treason so painful.

    • @alexavalos5437
      @alexavalos5437 7 років тому +35

      AtarahDerek he was treated like shit. If you read up about him, he was kind enough to supply his own troops with his own money while congress didn't send them anything. He should be held as a hero, but unfortunately, the people in charge of him at that time weren't exactly the brightest

    • @AtarahDerek
      @AtarahDerek 7 років тому +12

      Alex Avalos He was underappreciated and mistreated by everyone but Washington. But that does not excuse his actions. What's more, he deeply hurt the one officer in the entire army who truly did appreciate him. America's bitterness at Arnold isn't so much because he defected after we treated him like trash as it is because he stabbed Washingdad in the back.

    • @alexavalos5437
      @alexavalos5437 7 років тому +6

      AtarahDerek I know for fact that he hurt Washington. Those 2 were like brothers, and I believe that was enough for him, I just wish history would talk about this more than just saying " he wuz bad n shiz"

    I myself have read some Benedict Arnold books and to be honest, I don't blame him one bit. Like was said in this video, he was treated like garbage for doing things that today would warrant a medal of honor. After being treated like garbage for so long, the British offered him an offer where he wouldn't be treated like garbage and accepted. I would have done the same! I'm surprised John André was not mentioned, he was a big reason why Benedict's traitorous happenings did not go so well. People in history have become traitors for much less than Benny did and I don't blame him one bit.

    • @alexavalos5437
      @alexavalos5437 7 років тому +62

      Unfortunately, a majority of the population doesn't have the same view point here. He was shot in the leg, lost his horse, even used his own money and fortune to supply his American troops, yet he was still treated worse than some other really bad generals. The battle of Saratoga should have been his victory as he literally charged at the enemy, while the other "general" just sat back at his camp and watched

    • @grimdagamer
      @grimdagamer 7 років тому +19

      Agreed. I don't think "he was a dick" is a good enough reason to hate him or forget all the amazing things he did. But I admittedly don't know as much about this as I would like to. Also, John André got a very brief mention at 6:16 :)

    • @WalterLiddy
      @WalterLiddy 7 років тому +14

      Well I think the question is what was he fighting for in the first place? It seems like he was more interested in being glorified and having people recognize his contribution than he was in the actual goal of national independence. If that's the case then he was just a victim of his own narcissism. It's fine to crave acknowledgement when you're great at what you do, but when what you do is waging war, none of that matters as much as being justified in the war you're trying to win.

    See? History is so much more interesting when you populate it with real people with real problems and personality flaws, instead of legendary heroes who were without fault. Not only are you stripping that person of their humanity, you also sterilize the context in which they performed their legendary (or, in Ben's case, notorious) deeds. But nope; history class is just step one in instilling an unjustified sense of national pride which is then twisted into blind patriotism through subtle manipulation and political pandering.
    I'd like to be able to blame modern times for these drawbacks, but assuming that it was any different during Roman, Egyptian, or Babylonian times would be naïve and inaccurate. Sigh...

      The context of Benedict Arnold and the American Revolution in the US education system is that textbook publishers and creators are put to through a rigorous washing of history to make it as bland and synoptic as possible while also maintaining a mythologized version of the Revolution [and American History] that was just in all aspects. This mostly because of Texas State Board of Education isn't down with anything that critically questions the people or events involved in a lot American History and if they don't approve of the textbook, publishers will just do major edits [or drop it since the book will be sold at a loss in very few states if they did].

    • @frankm.2850
      @frankm.2850 6 років тому +3

      Actually it wasn't even different earlier in American history. If you look at early history textbooks (or modern ones made for Texas) they're basically propaganda. Not that that's much different than how we've used history for most of the lifetime of the species. Romans kept factual historical records, as did China, but the VAST majority of of civilizations throughout history have been less interested in modern history than what we'd think of as mythology. Romulus and Remus being a perfect example.

      Alexander M. I write full titles when it is something like "turn"
      Cause if you read a reveiw out of context "turn is a really good show"
      It doesn't make a lot of sense. Since "turn" is a verb.
      Advertisers have better ways to spend money than on youtube comments.
      Hell if they paid for a comment. They'd pay for at least a few dozen upvotes too.
      Id check out "tim pools" videos about reddit. He has his brother, "reactor" on, he explains how posts are tailor made to appeal to reddit and get upvotes. Thats the kinda stuff you gotta worry about.
      Oh and a recent video about paid product placement in news articles. That is supposed to seem natural. Crazy stuff

    In the moment he mentioned "teenager", I thought - she was 19, right? I didn't know this detail from his life, but I know Cracked is crazy about these old "perverts" (meaning guys, having relationship with a woman, who is either around 20, while he is in his 30's, or a 18 year old guy, who dates a 17 year old girl, or something like this). Arnold was in the military, he probably didn't want to start a family too early, because he needed to focus on his career... And he wanted more kids, which might have been a problem with older woman, so he chose a girl, that was in the ideal age for having kids. That is not bad reason, that is the best reason.

    • @ssl3546

      No kidding, it's not like the alternative was a 30-year-old college grad with a career. Whether he married a 19 year old or an old maid, it's all the same, except the young one is prettier, can breed and will live longer. It's a total no-brainer.

    pronounced 'jibbet', it's related to the word 'gaol' (which is pronounced and was subsequently replaced by 'jail'). The phrase 'flibbity gibbet' also comes from those old school public torture prisons =D
