- Опубліковано 3 чер 2024
- This amazing cartridge by Ralph Benzinger allows you to easily install TI-99/4A .BIN files (Roms) to an SD card for use by the TI-99/4A. This allows you to have a single cartridge that can run/play most any application/game on a stock TI-99/4A console. This is a great way to consolidate all your old cartridges into one single cartridge that will reduce wear and tear on your original console.
In this video, we'll launch a few applications and try out several games and even the infamous "Don't mess with Texas" demo! So sit back, grab your favorite beverage and let's have some fun with FinalGROM 99 and the TI/99/4A!

Ti 99/4a -- the DeLorean of home computers.
If you liked this video, you may really enjoy this one: ua-cam.com/video/CG3n5KGkImU/v-deo.html from about 2 weeks ago. New for the TI-99/4A.
My first computer - was such a great period of time to grow up. Thanks for this.
The TI-99/4A was my first computer too Mark, it was a great time! Almost magical back then when everything we did/learned was totally new and exciting. Not sure if you've seen this yet but I do have several TI-related videos on this page: wagnerstechtalk.com/retro-computing/ Some you may particularly like (if you haven't seen them yet) would be TIPI and Dragon's Lair (sure to impress) for the TI. In the video description, there is a power point created by the developer that explains how he pulled it off.
@@WagnersTechTalk wow - that Dragons Lair is some achievement - it’s amazing to me that the scene is still alive after nearly 40 years. I went C64, Amiga 500, Amiga 1200 after my TI. It will always be special to me.
hearing that parsec laser is some serious nostalgia. I didn't have the synth module. But it needs the creaking of those red joysticks
Just got my Ti99, and was looking for a nice full review of this. Cheers. Top marks!!
Thank you so much! Planning more TI Stuff soon. Always makes me happy to see people like/subscribe. I have some new TI stuff to review, so please stay tuned.
Seeing this video bring a lot of memories with my TI, Parsec was the best game for me. I also now want to go undig the TI (is at my parent's house, I hope), get this FinalGROM working and play with it on my 42" plasma TV.
It's a lot of fun playing the games I grew up on again. Many of the original carts I still have in the attic, but having a single cartridge that can play them all is great since it reduces wear and tear on the original hardware. Of course, playing those games and demos that I've missed over the years is great also. This would be my #1 TI accessory recommendation. After that, it would be the TIPI (video in my list if interested).
What was TI thinking in early '80... What a mistake to make! Great to have these days FinalGrom99. I still find me running
Extended Basic and video Chess :)
The FinalGrom99 is a pretty awesome option these days, if you can find one. They seem to be somewhat hard to find lately, but if you can nab one they are totally worth having!
Man great video! These games are so much fun. Alpiner was a classic back in the day. ( 1984) Moon patrol was always a cool game. I like the way the car floated when it jumped! Made it feel like it was in low gravity! Donkey Kong is still a great game! Thumbs up!
Couldn't agree more!
Greets from Ireland....cool stuff buddy
Greetings from Alabama, US and Thank you! I"m glad you enjoyed the vid.
Hello Wagner, great review, really enjoyed it! How often do you find the 32k memory necessary with the older software? I know the homebrew stuff usually needs it. Thank you for the review!
Not an easy question to answer, all depends on the software being run. 92% of the cartridge-based software won't need the extra 32k (estimate).
@@WagnersTechTalk Thank you for taking time to answer!
huge thanks for this video; the TI-99/4A was my 1st home computer at the age of 13.
any clue on the language used to build the famous pirate adventure "treasure island" game? was it written in assembly language?
while loading it from cassette into the command module , I noticed the tape noises during the process were a bit different from a regular basic/extended basic code.
thanks a bunch for any help.
My first computer was also the TI-99/4A at about the same age. I loved the Pirates Adventure game by Scott Adams, that was awesome! From what I understand, Scott is still active in the TI community. You may want to check out this forum where you can post your question : ti99.atariage.com/ I honestly don't know what it was written in but I assume Assembly.
Glad to see the TI gets the same cool gadgets as the C64!
Definitely check out the TIPI if you haven't already, that combined with FinalGROM99 is an awesome setup!
Now I wonder if this could be adapted to the 48k ZX Spectrum with the cartridge interface?
Woot, i have one of the blank PCBs for this. Havent gotten around to populating it yet.
You'll love it!
im going to buy the same :)
There are no lower case characters in TI Basic. The Alpha Lock latching key switches the character size from large to small but they are always upper case. The “Adventurs” expansion cartridge allowed the Scott Adams adventure games to be played. These displayed upper and lower case characters but your commands (GO NORTH, GET MATCHES etc) all still were upper case. If you tried to play a game using theJoysticks (Wired Remote Controllers as TI called them ( you got 2)) if you had the alpha lock on the up control did not work. It also had strange keystrokes for certain characters quotation marks (“) were [FCTN] and [P] and other things. You need a manual. I learned TI BASIC in the mid to late eighties. I found out how to change lines in programs to cheat or by-pass obstacles on simple adventure games. Who remembers listing the programs for help.
Correct. There are small caps, but no lower case.
5:20 - "Yes, you can actually browse the internet on your TI"...ROFL, Why yes you can! I was playing games on CompuServe in 1990 on my TI-99/4A, in fact! Before they closed down TI-99 support, they had ported access (at a premium rate) for DIRECT 'internet access'...of course, you were reaching it (in the far-less visual age) on a dial-up modem (as far as I know, the fastest speed you could access on a TI was 56k dial-in, though).
Ah, I remember CompuServe! Back then, couldn't afford the monthly fees but I think I did try it for about a month (free trial). Around '87, I had a CorComp 9900 micro controller (fully expanded, all internal cards) and two DSDD external drives. Those were the days! Sadly, I sold it off and used that to buy an Amiga 1000. Still kept the TI console, carts, disks, etc. but wish I had never sold the CC9900.
Nice video!! I have the FlashROM99 and I was wondering if I could use the same files that are used on the Final GROM99. If not do you know of a site that would have files that would work? Thanks.
Thank you :) Yes, they will work (I also went from a the FlashRom99 to the FinalGROM99). Also, check out the links in the video description, links to everything you would need are there. Hope this helps!
Hello again. I can see the programs but when I load them nothing happens. I have the memory expansion and yet nothing. Any ideas in what I'm doing wrong?
@@dagglock7615 Sorry, meant for you to try the ones from here ftp.whtech.com/Cartridges/FinalGROM99/
hah i had no idea they even released a real Pitfall for TI. I got my hands on a TI and Speech Synth off ebay but now i need to get a final grom
It was a 3rd party developer that created Pitfall for the TI, if I recall correctly it was around 2009. He did an awesome job with it. Another one that was crazy impressive is Dragon's Lair: wagnerstechtalk.com/retro-computing/#Dragons_Lair_for_the_TI-994A_Home_Computer-_NEW_in_2019_FULL_Play-through_in_practice_mode
@@WagnersTechTalk yup I love that video i could not believe dragons lair when i saw it. Incidentally I actually have been playing DL on NewWaveToys Replicade cabinets lately and waiting for space ace!
Hey Wagner, does this FinalGROM emulate disk or tapes? You didn't show Tunnels of Doom.
Not according to the manual here: endlos99.github.io/finalgrom99, for that you would need a disk drive or cassette player and/or a TIPI.
@@WagnersTechTalk that's what I thought, darn it.
@@scorch33 Maybe in a future update, not sure if it's technically possible (may be). But having all your carts on one and eliminating the wear+tear is still a definite win in my book ;)
@@WagnersTechTalk I totally agree. I'll have to see what I can do to make a program recorder for my TI, I think i saw somewhere that sells the ToD cassettes still.
This is awesome!
Happy you enjoyed it, I have a few others on this channel which may be equally interesting. For the future, I've picked up a few more TI-99/4a items for review as well ;) Stay tuned to WTT!
I have noticed you are sold out on FG99's. Making more???
@@chrisglidewell3011 Hi Chris, not me. I don't make any of this stuff, just buy it for review :) You can check with www.arcadeshopper.com to see if he has more available or coming.
@@chrisglidewell3011 I just ordered one from arcadeshopper.
When you get it, please post back with your thoughts on it. Probably the most used item I own for my TI-99/4A! Also, be sure to check out the links in the video description -lots of great stuff there for you to add to your FinalGROM99!
Just so I am clear. You download the bin files on a computer. Save them on an SD card. Then insert the card into the finalgrom?
Yep, that's pretty much it. Then insert the FG99 into the TI (with the SD card installed), browse any subfolders by pressing the associated letter and launch.
Hi
I am considering getting my 7 year old a Texas Instruments TI-994A for basic and educational cartridges. Any opinion on a better choice for her?
Tough question, honestly. My first computer was a TI-99/4A so I'm a bit partial to that machine. There are a lot of really good educational games and my kids were exposed to it early on. Most kids these days already know how to operate cellphones, tablets, etc. so not sure it would keep her interest for long. That said, of all the computers of the time TI really had a nice selection of educational titles which are, for the most part, timeless. Back when my kids were growing up, I didn't have a cart like the FG99 to let them try lots of different educational titles. So, it may be something worth considering for your child. One of my daughters did like Facemaker and I wound up creating a PalmOS (i.e. Palm Pilot) implementation of it as a result. That said, it's hard to say how well children today will appreciate it. My guess is,they'd rather have Mom/Dad's cell or tablet :) You could try emulating a TI first to see what she thinks using an Emulator such as Classic 99: www.harmlesslion.com/software/Classic99 This will let you run a TI on your PC, you can also install educational titles, games, etc. so she can try it out first.
Getting all the cables, monitors, etc. for some of this older equipment can sometimes be a little challenging and an emulator may save you some expense. I hope this helps!
@@WagnersTechTalk very well said and most likely true. I had showed her some Basic videos and she is very interested. I figured as TI also has a big listvof educational titles it might be worth a shot. The Finalgrom would seem to be a great chance to have all the educational titles loaded on one cart but I would need to understand how to do that.
I updated my reply with a link to an emulator called Classic 99. This might be good for you to try out, load up a few titles and see how she likes them. It could save you a few $$. If she loves it, then yes definitely encourage it!
One more note, if you have trouble with Classic 99 and would like to see a detailed video on it let me know. While I'm not an expert at it, I've used it enough to help get you started. If you do decide to get a FinalGrom99 then I recommend visiting ti99.atariage.com for more questions than I can likely answer. There are a lot of great folks there that will go out of their way to help you, like they did me on a few occasions. To get started with the FinalGrom 99, you'll want to start here: atariage.com/forums/topic/253095-%F0%9F%96%A5-flashrom-99-finalgrom-99-repository-08242019/ or here ftp.whtech.com/Cartridges/FinalGROM99/
@@WagnersTechTalk Awesome! Thanks so much for this info.
One confusion I have is does the finalgrom have all the TI cartridges loaded on it or do i need to find and load them myself.
The emulator looks great but I am looking to get just the educational carts.
Woah!
I just got a bare PCB and are gathering all the parts, say a prayer for me in my attempts to do surface mount component soldering
oh man, you must have some serious skills! SMT Soldering ain't easy, let me know how it goes!
@@WagnersTechTalk I have some decent hot air SMD soldering equipment so in THEORY it shouldn't be too big a deal, it should just be a matter of lining things up correctly, putting the right amount of solder paste and heating it up without moving anything or causing bridges, I've got some old surface mount PCBs I'm going to practice on first. I'll let you know how it works out, though it might be a while before I complete it as I've got parts coming from all corners of the earth for it and no doubt that's going to take forever.
@@joesmoe71 That's awesome, you sound like you know exactly what to do! I couldn't imagine hand-soldering it, so going with the paste+hot air SMD is the way to go for sure. Man, that would make a great UA-cam video!
@@WagnersTechTalk I've done a LITTLE smd work, mostly just reflowing chips that started coming off boards, I've also got a binary clock kit with parts as small as the finalrom99 so if I can manage to get that to work I should be ok to do the other. I doubt I'll do a video of me doing the soldering but maybe I'll put up a quick one to show it off if it comes out right. If you want to see how it's done there's a bunch of videos here on youtube about it.
built quite s few over the last year or so, once you learn drag soldering, it’s a breeze.
Any chance anyone is making the finalgrom99 or selling one in 2023? Just came across a TI and i'm so excited. Was my first computer. Thanks!
Congrats on getting a TI! It was my first computer also. I've seen a few FinalGROM99's on ebay (just did a search, there is one in the UK for sale). One of the best places for the latest TI info. is on AtariAge, link here: forums.atariage.com/forum/164-ti-994a-computers/ . Tons of excellent info. there! You may also like some of my older videos on TIPI and Dragon's Lair for the TI-99/4A : wagnerstechtalk.com/retro-computing/
@@WagnersTechTalk great info; thanks! I found that same one on Ebay from the UK last night and ordered it. I think they had 2 available. :) I'm heading down the rabbit hole now... I was lucky enough that the one I picked up today had ALL the manuals for the computer, the voice unit, memory unit, all the game books, two joysticks... I'm over the moon. Even has some blank keyboard tags! I doubt I'll use the tax software. lol
DOOD!
My wife isn't going to like me spending part of my paycheck on this! Oh well.
You can always tell her you're saving money, you won't have to buy any more TI cartridges again :)
@@WagnersTechTalk that's perfect! And it would be exciting to play homebrew too.
