this video is perhaps one of the few instructional videos which are cleanly shot and illustrated. thanks killersoundz, I was going to work on my '80 cb750 head in few days and this certainly helps and gave me the needed confidence. I think I might just be able to create my own valve removal tool using a C clamp now that I know what it looks like :)
Your spring clamp face that sits on top of the valve spring is on upside down. The "flats" on the side of the face are meant to saddle over the top of the spring to avoid sliding or slipping off the valve washer.
Yeah, sorry but the proper way to do these valves is to cut them with the proper 3 angles. These are hardened valve seats and so lapping take a long time to produce any meaningful results. By cutting them, you refresh the angles to promote better valve sealing. The only time a lap may be of real use is if you are mainly cleaning the seat. Also, a lot of valves are stellite coated and it is very thin. Lapping can remove that coating.
The problem is that it won't last as long, and if the lapping was done with new valves, it can damage them. Bottom line is that the job isn't as good as it could be. How long did the leak down test go for? There was a leakdown test, right?
