Well dood. If you suck at Q-bert you probably haven´t tried hoging the cabinet in a 45 degree angle? Same goes for a controller on emulation on a modern system. Hold that controller in a 45 degree angle. A world of difference, I promise.
Philip Wilcox I think he mentioned Phalanx in another list somewhere, but I'm not *completely* sure about that. It has to be mentioned for the box art alone, though.
I know about it, but due to time limitations, we went with just a small portion of the games that I pulled for this series. We all are going to have hidden gems that we want covered. Some had to make the cut.
In regards to Peace Keepers, that trilogy consists of Rival Turf, Brawl Brothers, and Peace Keepers. Glad to see it make the list, it's an awesome game.
Neat observation. probably how they easily named the character from taking it from their company capcom. Also, capcoms name comes from shortening their actual company’s full name: capsule computers.
I always forget about the MSX. I have some friends that fullfill my MSX needs. Super hard to collect for(have to buy stuff online mostly now). Thanks for the background on the Valis.
Jason it was a pleasure to have met you,Paul and John at the Portland Gaming Expo. I would like to thank all three of you guys on taking the time to chat me. I admit being star struck to have met all three you guys in person. Your panel was both AWESOME and informative. I would also like to thank you all for the free game I received at the panel that was xbox's 007 Night Fire. Paul actually flipped in my direction and I was very happy catch it. John thank you for DVD on collecting. Rock on
Love this segment of your show! I just started my SNES collection and this is a great way to learn about the systems hidden gems. Thanks, keep up the great work and keep them coming!
I'm playing through Shadowrun Returns on the iPad right now. Are you familiar with that new game? How does it compare to the Genesis version? I heard it might be the spiritual successor to that
I found this channel yesterday when i was watching cgr. I love this channel now, so far this is the only channel i have watched where i will watch the ads. Keep up the good work
It's funny to see Captain Commando in this list when actually it was very famous here in Brazil during several years. We could easily find this arcade around here, and people loved it, as for Cadillacs and Dinossaurs, another famous one that was not ported to the snes. Excelent video by the way...
One game that I liked that wasn't on the list was "Brain Lord." It is an action RPG with a top down view and a heavy emphasis on puzzle solving. "Brain Lord" is (in my opinion) Enix's (now Square Enix) take on the Zelda series. Very good game and worth checking out. :)
I forgot all about Brain Lord! I remember me and my brother renting it a few times but can't remember much about the game other than I loved it. I had no idea it was obscure in any way.
Tradewest's Plok (for the music alone) and Soldiers of Fortune (Chaos Engine) are two "hidden gems" worth checking out. And Shadowrun SNES is one of my all-time favs.
One of the best hidden gems I ever played was an r-type style game called U.N. Squadron. Awesome game. Upgradeable plains and bombs made it one of my favorite games as a kid, you should check it out.
Firepower 2000 was called Silkworm IV on the Amiga and what made it awesome, is the levels were streamed from disk, so you didn't have to wait for the next level to load.
These hidden gems videos are my absolute favorite videos to watch. I didn’t think there was anything left to discover on the Super Nintendo and man was I wrong! I tried a few of these games you guys discussed and I had a ton of fun. Thank you for reigniting my love of video games MJR and John Hancock love this channel! 👍
I liked the extra at the end where you showed some really unique and cool controllers. I think the hidden gem series is my favorite out or your videos. I would like to see another for the original PlayStation and Xbox if you have enough material for that. Keep up the awesome work on this channel!
The three games in this trilogy by Jaleco were named Rushing Beat, Rushing Beat Ran, and Rushing Beat Shura in Japan. Their US names were Rival Turf, Brawl Brothers, and The Peace Keepers, respectively. Although I hated the moronic robot enemy and cartoon character icons in Rushing Beat Shura, I found it moronic that the music was cut from The Peace Keepers (yes, there was music in the game and it was pretty good). However, aside from enemy names and some cut scenes, Rival Turf remained unchanged and you could actually access the full and unchanged game of Rushing Beat Ran through Brawl Brothers legitimately through a secret code. I also owned The Peace Keepers.
Glad you enjoyed the Expo and our Panel. If you have a question you'd like answered, record an AUDIO QUESTION with your phone/computer and send it to our podcast: AllGenGamers (dot) com
Just found an arcade controller for the MSX series of machines. It was used in arcades to a cabinet that had a MSX machine inside and primary for Pachinko games, popular in Japan. The controller is a Pasoko-1000, and was listed as junk, I am just uploading a video where I show how I repaired it. Great series with John, some really good picks in this part. The Valis series started on the MSX computers (although the 1st game is not that good).
There's a nice little SNES game called On The Ball that plays like a 2D version of Monkey Ball - you rotate the maze to roll the marble to the exit. Was a Taito arcade game and it's ported really well to the SNES. Works great with the standard controller but it also supports the SNES mouse controller.
I actually glad to see kendo's rage make the list, I haven't been able to own the game myself, but its definitely high on my priority list when I start collecting for the snes.
I would love to, but I am not the editor, nor have the time to pump out a consistent video time after time. I would much rather guest on MJR's and just have some silly fun :)
If I remember correctly the Peace Keepers brawler had a Battle Royal feature for up to 4 players. You could also go through the options and change the colors of the characters in the game. No joke, you could turn the hero green or the big dude with a mohawk pink. Fun stuff.
The brawlers from the "trilogy" are "Rival Turf", "Brawl Brothers" and the last of them "The Peace Keepers", fun games with awesome soundtrack. I dont know if The peace keepers is related to the other two, but the others, yes they are.
4:40.... the first snes game, where i got stuck and wasnt able to beat the game from my last save-point. Really need to replay & finish it some day soon.
I had about 100 SNES games when I was a kid. Out of all three videos I only owned two of the gems he presented. Pac Attack and Firepower 2000. Firepower was great, very difficult. I barely got past the first stage.
great choices here. i never liked the gumball sticks for arcade. the ones that came stock on street fighter 2 cabinets were my favorite (they were vertically thick throughout instead of just having a gumball "on top")
Kendo Rage is fun. Wolfchild looks cool, I've definitely seen it before. I only know Captain Commando because he was in the first MvC game, or at least the Dreamcast port... Shadow Run's become kind of a cult classic now. Cool lists, would have liked to see Wild Guns, Zombies Ate My Neighbors, or Metal Warriors on one of these.
Love the video. Talking about weird controllers theres this gigantic twin arcade stick for the sega saturn its like 400 bucks, think its made by hori. Hori is the Cadillac to arcade sticks
I have Firepower 2000. It's a great game. I think at the menu screen you press select and then it will have a separate screen and then you pressed select and then you press start and 2-Player mode activates.
Peace Keepers! My mom took me to a pawn shop for my my bday one year, and I got that game and WWF Rage in the Cage for Sega CD lol. Great game. Way more to it than people might think.
I do have a couple of spare MSX titles (although nothing complete - as although I have found a bit complete lately most MSX items are loose cartridges). I have heaps of controllers and hardware as well. Plus of course my original titles which I am re-releasing shortly.
A few more rarer type ones for me based on playability and fun factor but not mentioned much were bomberman 3 - played to death, evo - loved the game style, jurassic park - played it over and over finished it like 4 times, equinox, alfred chicken
Ever since realizing I can use my PS4 controller to control my cellphone emulators I've been eating these games up!!! I love it!!! more more more please!!
I've heard of some of these, but the only one I own so far is Firepower 2000. I like that game so much it got me started on video reviews on my own channel.
What I love about SNES and Genesis; even if the same game or series was released on both systems, they often offered completely different experiences, unlike today's multi-plats.
Another unique controller exclusive to Japan was the Hori SGB Commander. It could not only function as a regular SNES/SRC pad, but also could switch to a mode with functions exclusive to the Super Game Boy.
I have the same 3rd party stealth arcade stick. It actually works really well! There is another capcom controller that i have called the Capcom Pad Soldier. Its a bit weird, but once you get used to it, its kind of like a mini pseudo arcade stick. Works great with street fighter games! :)
No one ever talks about "B.O.B." on both SNES and Genesis. Awesome platformer. Robot with cool upgrades and different weapons. Really good looking. Awesome hidden gem!
Obscure game: Hyper Zone by Hal, a 3D shooter that looks like a mix of F-Zero and Star Fox and makes heavy use of Mode-7. It's also a great game with an awesome soundtrack! Obscure Hardware: Tristar Super 8: An adapter that allows you to play NES, SNES, Famicom and Super Famicom games via an SNES or Super Famicom.
Holy shit, I own Hyper Zone, actually. I'd agree that it's a bit of a hidden gem. That game kicked my ass as a kid. I should pop it back in and play some.
+AJ Spencer Shoulda came to visit me. I found my SNES stuff recently. Games and all. And apparently I had like 20 normal controllers for some reason. I dunno wtf I was doing with that many controllers. I only had 2 consoles and no Multi-tap.
nice games in there.some of these i played.Hagane,Peace Keepers and Super Turrican 2 are all awesome.i loved every minute of playing these back in the day.i'll be looking into these new discoveries, thanks!
I am both speechless and forever grateful, 2 games I've been trying to figure out the title for from my childhood I found today. Bio Metal was sooo good (also hard) been trying to figure out the title for years. That and Musya from the second Snes hidden gems video, 1 Million Thank you's to John! It's so hard to find a game when all you remember is "well it's a space shooter on snes...it had cool music..."
Wouldn't say that Knights of Round was very well known on the SNES but by a select few it's more known these days though and Captain Commando was pretty known in the arcades during the early 90's, least up here in Vancouver anyway.
@frylock456 the phrase "in the wild" has been used to since people hunted their meals in the wild. Pretty much it's been around as long as the language it's used in..

Well dood.
If you suck at Q-bert you probably haven´t tried hoging the cabinet in a 45 degree angle?
Same goes for a controller on emulation on a modern system.
Hold that controller in a 45 degree angle.
A world of difference, I promise.
good list, but i was surprised to not see phalanx here... maybe i was the only fan?
Philip Wilcox I think he mentioned Phalanx in another list somewhere, but I'm not *completely* sure about that. It has to be mentioned for the box art alone, though.
for sure, i remember being a kid and thinking "wtf is up with this old guy?"
Philip Wilcox No shit! Seriously surreal.
I remember Peace keepers as Rushing Beat Run and it was 4 players with the Multitap...used to love it 👍
I know about it, but due to time limitations, we went with just a small portion of the games that I pulled for this series. We all are going to have hidden gems that we want covered. Some had to make the cut.
In regards to Peace Keepers, that trilogy consists of Rival Turf, Brawl Brothers, and Peace Keepers. Glad to see it make the list, it's an awesome game.
amazing collection! Drugs ruined my life & i sold off virtually all my retro games.. Thank God im clean now & can slowly get some of my stuff back
+Thomas Gonzalez Glad to hear you are clean now, congrats!
Congrats man! Way to go
Thanks all!
God is good.
+Esteban Rodríguez There is no God. He did this on his own. GZ for that!
I just realized...Captain Commando = CAPtain COMmando = CAPCOM
Bardia Mansoori Holy shit, I never noticed D;
That's funny, I just realized the same thing, after you explained it to me.
Congrats.
Holy shit, that's right.
Neat observation. probably how they easily named the character from taking it from their company capcom. Also, capcoms name comes from shortening their actual company’s full name: capsule computers.
please do more super nintendo hidden gems! theres like 700 games im sure you guys could squeeze out 10 more games or so
I freaking LOVE Shadowrun on the SNES. My favorite game of all time!
The Genesis version was fun too
Shadowrun is one of my top SNES titles. I played it when I was about 15 and recently revisited it at 32. It held up quite nicely and was a blast.
I always forget about the MSX. I have some friends that fullfill my MSX needs. Super hard to collect for(have to buy stuff online mostly now). Thanks for the background on the Valis.
how can ppl not know about captain commando?

That captain cammando is the same one from Marvel Vs Capcom fighting games I loved him
The Mass Effect series is one of my favorite RPGs of all time. I can't decide who is hotter: Miranda, Liara or Jack
We had a kick-ass time hanging with you guys too in Portland. Such a great expo made even better with friends!
It's funny to see Captain Commando in this list when actually it was very famous here in Brazil during several years. We could easily find this arcade around here, and people loved it, as for Cadillacs and Dinossaurs, another famous one that was not ported to the snes. Excelent video by the way...
The Undercover Cops is a great final fight type side scrolling brawler

Yes! I was going to comment about that myself. Brain Lord is awesome!
I forgot all about Brain Lord! I remember me and my brother renting it a few times but can't remember much about the game other than I loved it. I had no idea it was obscure in any way.
Never heard of it! Thank you!
John surprised me by speaking like Q*Bert. I thought it was hilarious!
This video is almost 10 years old why am I watching this! Lol
because MJR is the best gaming channel on youtube! :D
Tradewest's Plok (for the music alone) and Soldiers of Fortune (Chaos Engine) are two "hidden gems" worth checking out.

mitchell mudrow I wouldn't call UN Squadron a hidden gem.
Cap is one of my fav characters from Marvel vs Capcom series. Especially since his moves bring out all the characters on his team from the brawler.

That Qbert joke at 1:34 made my day. haha Great video and keep up the good work!

Great hidden Gems - great video as always. Q*bert 3 and BioMetal looked awesome.
Glad you enjoyed the Expo and our Panel. If you have a question you'd like answered, record an AUDIO QUESTION with your phone/computer and send it to our podcast: AllGenGamers (dot) com
I've watched the 3 videos and I must say this is probably the best hidden gem video Ive seen so far and Ive seen plenty. Really nice tips.
I just found this, but this whole community just always brings a smile to my face
Great videos dudes. I watched all 3. Awesome stuff!
I love how John is always happy and smiling. If I had all those games, I probably would be smiling all the time too. Keep up the great vids!
Yes the Captain Commando character is also in Marvel Vs Capcom 1 & 2, Namco Vs Capcom, Card Fighters Clash 2, and Card Fighters Clash DS.
Captain Commando started as an arcade game. There was one at the corner store by the house I grew up in. Game was awesome.
Thanks for sharing your collection John and MJR for another great hidden gems video. Would love a 3 part Sega genesis hidden gems with John. =)
There's a nice little SNES game called On The Ball that plays like a 2D version of Monkey Ball - you rotate the maze to roll the marble to the exit. Was a Taito arcade game and it's ported really well to the SNES. Works great with the standard controller but it also supports the SNES mouse controller.

woho! Just spent a couple of months watching through all your episodes. Feels good to be in phase now, finally!! :D
Super Nintendo Hidden Gems Drinking Game: Watch all three of these videos, and take a shot every time John says "like I said".
Ninja Warriors was one of the best beat 'em up's I ever played on the SNES. I think it's pretty obscure, as well.
Capt Commando also makes an appearance in Marvel Vs Capcom (1) for The Dreamcast as well. Great videos guys, obscure games kick arse keep makin em!
Love the SNES Gems videos, 16 bit era was outstanding!!
good video! Loved the gibson les paul at the end. awsome guitar!!!
Thanks once again MJR! Looking at building up my SNES collection, so this gave me a lot of great ideas! Keep up the great vids!
4:40.... the first snes game, where i got stuck and wasnt able to beat the game from my last save-point.
Glad to see Firepower 2000 on this list. Almost 30 years later and there hasn't been another game that has been quite like it.
Fridays are extra awesome with some MJR and John H!

Another unique controller exclusive to Japan was the Hori SGB Commander. It could not only function as a regular SNES/SRC pad, but also could switch to a mode with functions exclusive to the Super Game Boy.
I did the kickstarter for Shadowrun Returns (now out) and I think it is fantastic... brings back memories
Dude, I've played a tooon of Captain Commando on the arcade here on my little city in Brazil. I loved it!
Shadow Run is a must have. Awesome game!
Awesome hidden gem!
metal jesus you are great. Being a Commodore amiga man I dont know much about your subjects but you educate me about the nintendo retro world. Thanks
Obscure game: Hyper Zone by Hal, a 3D shooter that looks like a mix of F-Zero and Star Fox and makes heavy use of Mode-7. It's also a great game with an awesome soundtrack!

Just picked up wolf child after seeing this video on the SNES. can't wait, awesome vids!
Oh god for years the only controller I had for my SNES as a kid was that stealth one.. Learned to love it.
+AJ Spencer Shoulda came to visit me. I found my SNES stuff recently. Games and all. And apparently I had like 20 normal controllers for some reason. I dunno wtf I was doing with that many controllers. I only had 2 consoles and no Multi-tap.
Keep em coming! Hidden Gems 4!!!
These are REALLY hidden gem. You sir are a real gamer :D
I would think John would highlight Sonic Blast Man 2. That's a semi-obscure beat-em-up for sure!
Finally someone talks about Firepower 2000! I loved that game as a kid!
Lol eyes on the prize. I love these episodes with you and john. Keep up the awesome videos!!
I loved Kendo Rage. One of the greatest SNES games out there.
Keep the snes gems coming!! This series is awesome!
nice games in there.some of these i played.Hagane,Peace Keepers and Super Turrican 2 are all awesome.i loved every minute of playing these back in the day.i'll be looking into these new discoveries, thanks!
The Peace Keepers is playable with 4 players with a multi-tap.
ColonelNegative ....cool i I’ll have to hunt down a multi tap now. Don’t know if to many beat em up that are four players. Thanks!!
Wouldn't say that Knights of Round was very well known on the SNES but by a select few it's more known these days though and Captain Commando was pretty known in the arcades during the early 90's, least up here in Vancouver anyway.

my favorite add on for the snes was the bazooka gun ! i used it more as a toy gun than a controller though.
Nice 3 part hidden gems really enjoyed it,thanks goes out to both of you, much appreciated.
Love these hidden gem videos. Keep them coming.
