The Convair B-58 "Hustler" Supersonic Bomber - Champion of Champions (Restored Color 1962)

  • General Jimmy Stewart walks you through the B-58 Hustler's virtues and reviews the many records she claimed in this memorable film. A pilot once said of the Convair B-58, "She looked like she was breaking the sound barrier just sitting on the tarmac." At Mach 2+, the B-58 wasn't just one of the fastest bombers of her day, she was one of the fastest military planes period.. A first cousin of the hot "century series" of fighters, the delta winged "Hustler' medium bomber combined outstanding performance with a striking, javelin-like profile that spawned a mystique that survives to this day. In the early1960s, at the height of the Cold War, in just two years the B-58 captured 14 speed and performance records, many previously held by Soviet aircraft. She was not only capable of extended 700 mph on-the deck missions at 500 feet (then unheard of for a bomber and without the advantages of today's ground hugging radar or fly-by-wire) she also set altitude and climb records. The B-58 was capable of doing whatever was necessary to invade enemy air space. As legendary star and war hero Jimmy Stewart says in this film, she was a lot more than a "hot rod" made for setting records, she was a lethal weapon of war -- and an outstandingly handsome aircraft.
    I had a B-58 model when I was a kid and never forgot it. The surviving copy of this film had lots of scratches & heavy color shifts, so I spent more than a 2 weeks digitally restoring it. I had the great honor to attend church with Gen Stewart between 1979 and 1982. He came every Sunday he was in town. At Christmas he would read the "lessons" about the birth of Jesus, while those of us in the choir sang accompanying Christmas songs. So, I technically got to perform with Mr. Stewart at the Rodeo Drive Presbyterian Church! He was a remarkable man, tremendous actor, fantastic flyer, and great American. No other actor achieved his rank in the military.

      It came too soon. The technology that was need to make it historic was not developed yet. With all the money that has been spent from that time to this, we might as well have stuck with the B-58.

      @@Dbusdriver71 Agreed... It was extremely advanced for its time, and just as expensive. Ironic that no one complains about the costs of aircraft like the F-35... keeping the B-58 on active duty would have been cheap in comparison.

    • @Dbusdriver71
      @Dbusdriver71 4 роки тому +1

      @@Reindeer911 Like rock and roll bands reindeer911 timing can be everything. A stealth fighter that sort of works has a better chance of more investment and time to sort itself out versus a Mach 2 Bomber with technology that was ahead of its time that when it worked it was fantastic but when it had problems it was usually disasterous. Soviet surface to air missles kept improving and kept pace with us. Even Valkrey couldn't survive so it was flown (the one that was left) for testing. The funny thing is the B-52 is the most attacked bomber and yet it will be kept for up to 50 more years.

    Fun fact, Maj. Henry John Deutschendorf, shown piloting one of the Hustlers, had a son, Henry John Deutschendorf Jr., who wanted to fly like he did, but had to abandon that dream due to poor eyesight. Instead his son became a singer/songwriter. Known mostly for country music, and going by his middle name, John, he had to change his last name because *Deutschendorf* was too long to fit on the record label. So he took as his last name the capitol of his favorite state, Colorado. We knew him as John Denver.

    I never realised he was a brigadier general. Not only that but he says he flew the B-58 in the film. To actually do all the work and training to the point where he could pilot that plane is big news. Wiki says he stayed current on B-36, B-47 and B-52 bombers. A true bomber man. I'm amazed.

    So what was so funny? He WAS actually an Air Force Reserve Brigadier General. He was checked out in every aircraft Strategic Air Command had in the 60s including the B-58. Knowing him, he would not have tolerated a public relations faked flight and taxi-in of that bomber without him actually doing it. He was a very self-effacing individual and he would have NEVER said "yeah, that was really me piloting that plane". He let the footage speak for itself.

    Jimmy Stewart, Major General, USAF Reserve (promoted by president Reagan on the reserve retired list) was a very impressive man and great American. Joined the US Army Air Corps before the US entered WW2, he rose from Private to full Colonel and commanded a USAAF bombing wing in the UK. Staying in the Reserve after the war he flew all of the Strategic Air Command's aircraft. He was promoted Brig Gen in 1959. Before retiring from active reserve service he flew B52s in combat in the Vietnam war.

      When my wife and I were on our honeymoon to California in 1992, we went on a Hollywood bus tour of star's homes. When we got to Jimmy Stewart's house, he was just coming out his front door to get into his car. He turned and waved at us, which is something he commonly did, apparently. I remember a filght of B-58's doing a 'fly-over' of a 4th of July parade when I was a kid. This vid also explains some of the sonic booms I heard around the same time. At least until the "timed" sonic booms came around when the A-12 was being tested around the same time frame. My guess was that the B-58 filghts were being used to "cover" for the top-secret A-12, which later became known as the SR-71.

      The Lake Worth school i attended, is in direct flight path, about a 1/3 mile north of the runway. During the Cuban Scare, when the B-52's were often in constant take off & landing mode, the teacher would just get up and write on the board the pages we were to read till it abated.
      By the 1960's, noise from air traffic at Carswell Air Force Base caused the district's schools to lose 10 percent of teaching time each day. To mitigate this problem, Lake Worth Junior High School was built underground; this 1964 construction project included 18 rooms at a cost of $495,000.

    One wonders who produced and paid for this film, and where it was shown, and what its intended purpose was.
    My guess--which is worth precisely what you are paying for it--is it was General Dynamics (parent of Convair, maker of the B-58), working in tandem with the USAF--who made this film, in an effort to build support, and among the electorate, for funding further production of the B-58.
    This kind of coordinated and well-funded lobbying effort might well be what President Eisenhower was referring to in the conference of February 10th, 1959, when he said to Dr. Killian, Dr. Purcell, and Dr. Land (inventor of the Polaroid), and General Goodpaster: "The munitions makers are making tremendous efforts toward getting more contracts and in fact seem to be exerting undue influence over the Senators." (declassified, 10-27-1995)

    B-58 had too short a range (4,400 mi) to be truly useful as a deterrent. Compare this to the range of the B-52 (8,800 miles PLUS)
    That is why the B-58 had such a short service life.

    • @jamesbottger5894
      @jamesbottger5894 Рік тому

      There were actually several other reasons it had such a short service life. It was expensive to operate and maintain, difficult to fly, suffered from many non-combat related accidents, and could only carry nukes, which meant it couldn't be used tactically...also, SAMs meant that it couldn't be used at high altitudes...it was incredibly fast, but it couldn't outrun SAMs...

    AT low altitude it had to travel subsonically. That is why it failed and was never operational. It was made to fly at high altitude at Mach 2. At low altitude it could travel no faster that Mach.9 or it would reveal it's position.

    Wonder why they never did an interceptor AA variant with this design. It was as fast or even faster than many contemporary fighter aircrafts, had much superior range and room and tonnage to put big early radars and long range missiles. might even have turned quite well at high altitudes and speeds and dogfighting was not a high priority in the late fifties. imagine a missile train that could shoot down bombers and fighters from a safe distance or do fast dash and run maneuvers.

      The problem with delta wing craft is they were stable, too stable, in fact. What I mean by that is they were difficult to turn and maneuver in flight; subsequent aircraft had and have a bit of jittery-ness built-in to their designs to make them easier to maneuver.
