Hi Al, I’m a recent subscriber to your channel - love all your videos. I find you very inspiring, a lot of what you say I can totally resonate with. I think I’m only about 1/5 of the way through your content! But it’s really helping me prepare for my first wild camp! Keep up all your good work😊
A little trick I like to do when winter camping here in Canada is I wear a light glove liner under my mittens and it give me my dexterity back without freezing my fingers .
Great to see you out in the fresh air again mate and enjoying the snow. I love to camp this way too, although I prefer to sleep naked or wearing a very thin base layer at most with no hat or socks. My Mountain Hardwear Ghost waterproof minus -40C 🪿 down sleepingbag is a lot bulkier to carry than your PHD. The only problem is even in minus -15C and gale force winds it's often far too warm, even on top of a mountain! 🥵 (That's why I prefer the zip to go all the way down so that I can open and vent the lower foot 👣 area when needed). I like to wear the Rab Batura jacket and Mountain Equipment Expedition down pants when fairly stationary in severe cold weather. (I just stuff those inside a soft empty sack to make a very comfortable pillow). The mat is an Exped HL XL Winter downmat. I've been following PHD gear for many years, and often consider to give them a bell to order a special piece of gear to fit my needs. I just wish that Pete would get a better 🎤 microphone for his PHD UA-cam videos! 😂
I remember some 40 years ago I was up in the north of Sweden just by our tallest mountain. It was freezing cold, I mean really cold. Slept on the snow just like you. Woke up in the morning and was convinced I had peed myself… during the night it came down a foot of snow which melted on on sleeping bag and on the mat. Luckily it was the last night and not to far from the car. At that point good bivvy bags hardly exist. Now I have one😅 great adventure again.
What an amazing night. One of your top adventures, I reckon (despite no Blue)! Love the 2001 refs as well. Keep going out there, taking us with you 😊. Thanks
Your before-bed philosophical monologue is almost word-for-word the same as mine. I absolutely LOVE living here in the mountains of NW Maine, having a fairly sound body that lets me do the physically strenuous stuff I like to do, and a job that pays well enough that I can buy the gear I need while still living well within my means. Looking up at the stars in the night sky, having the capability of understanding some of what you’re looking at, all you can really say is “I fucking LOVE being alive!”

Hi Al. That looked bloody cold mate, but obviously the PH Designs kit was up to the job and kept you warm and safe. Thought it was cold here in the Cotswolds the other day when I was out the back splitting fire wood for the wood burner! Body was sweating, but had to go back in after a couple of hours as I couldn't feel me hands due to the cold. Cheers,Ozzy.

What a great advert for PH Designs. I'd not heard of them before, but I'll definitely be checking them out after watching this. I own a few bits of Mountain Equipment gear from the days before they went mainstream. I love my down jacket which is still goind strong after 20 years use. Ive done a few wild camps in the snow myself but never without a bivi over my sleeping bag. Fair play to you for going so minimalist.
Used to live within walking distance of the Muntain Equipment factory in Glossop back in the 1970s, we used to buy seconds at a very cheap price. Tend to buy Alpkit gear now.
Top tip. Just speaking from experience, I would put my boots in a stuff sack and store them at the bottom of my bag. Those boots must've been like lumps of ice in the morning.
@@BUSHMANandBLUE Pro Tip, bring 480lbs of coal, 200lbs of seasoned cedar wood, multi fuel stove, food for 12 days, and actually enjoy the cold. I do tip my hat to you for what you do. Seems like you’ve formed too many hats in the mercury and have run off mad into the hills.
Incredible. You do put kit to the max test 😂❤ What a slide show of explorers and expeditions that PHD kit has been used on. 😮 And now a Yorkshire man on a rock in the snow. Q. What baselayers did you have, Al?
Wow you are inspiring showing this love for nature and being out alone. I relate and even get what you mean about going that way... doing what you love.
Awesome, you don't have to think about any Apex predators in the wilds of Yorkshire country. Foxes and badgers have it good. One hell of a sleeping bag.🇬🇧🇺🇸🍺
Wow, thank you for sharing such beauty with us. The way the snow sparkles ❤ In the morning, it looked like you were in a sarcophagi of some ancient pharaoh.
Nice one... alas no snow for us down in the fens, but good skating weather nonetheless. Would be intrigued to know the make of that bluetooth thermometer you were using? Cheers
When I am bivvying, I take my PH designs Greenlandic sleeping bag cover. It prevents the bag getting wet, either from potential leaks or condensation. Enjoyed the video and the previous one on my favourite Lakeland peak, Esk Pike. Best wishes C.
We drove over to "The Green Draggon" (13th century pub) at Hardraw a couple of days ago. Beautiful drive over the Dales in the snow from home, past Mallerstang and Wildboar Fell. Cracking place!
Hi al. Great timing. I was waiting for your video. Hope you and your family had great Christmas. Give blue treat from me. Love blue. Stay safe and warm.
This video, and your others, is like a therapy session. Then the stunning views and a great education in outdoor enjoyment. Priceless. Best wishes to you and Blue. 🙏
My thing is walking and photography and a few months ago I took the plunge and got the Minimus Pullover and I have to say an amazing jacket to wear which has coped easily with the recent sub zero temps. So light, so warm and very well made mine was a perfect fit. PHD have a sale sort of October-November time worth checking out as good savings to be had on very good gear.😊
Love your videos - especially these winter camping videos. I have not tried winter camping yet, jus done a few summer ones. Your sleeping mat, I have heard if you blow into the bag pump (if thas the right words to describe it) it creates moisture inside your mat and eventually the moisture can destroy the fibres inside your bag. I am not sure how true this is, but am interested to hear what you think (and other people). What are your opinions?
I am very fortunate to use the full sleeping phd system and wear their clothing and I can’t imagine many people will be able to afford this luxury … you must be doing well for this company to support you bearing in mind the very reverent and high achieving explorers it has endorsed in its time … a niche and home made product definitely worth supporting and it works … good work if you can get it Al … my hats off to you … well done … still waiting for a hilliberg endorsement 🤔😂
Definitely brilliant gear and like anything only worth the money if you use it and in this case for the people on challenging expeditions, keeps you alive. Hilleberg next😬😂
The Thermarest NXT (R7.3) is among the best & warmest inflatable air mattresses now available. It's 70D ground side material is bulletproof - not likely to be punctured. I like the 1/4 length zipper. I'd prefer it to be centered rather than side. Excellent, first of the morning footage. Warm Regards from Reno, Nevada, U.S.A.
Definitely the best mat out there especially for cold weather. In a hammock I like a central zip but PHD gear is all custom made so if you want that you can.
Thanks Allen for testing out the bag I’m saving up for! Would there ever be a need for the Hispar 500k in the UK if used with a 4 season tent? Or is the Hispar 400k plenty warm enough for UK winters with a tent?
The Hispar 400 is enough for 95% of the winter UK temperatures although at times in Scotland it can be very low. It can always be boosted by wearing a down jacket and trousers in it. I love the short zip as I never undue a zip fully and the neck baffle.
That looked like a very cozy camp. I've not tried cowboy camping yet. Maybe something to do when the weather gets a bit warmer as my current gear isn't rated to those extremes. Did you pick up your temperature gauge? Noticed it was still in the ground after you had packed up.
I'm glad you mentioned about the sleeping bag, cos I have a habit of taking a double sleep bag camping because I like to stretch out like a star fish, then wonder why I'm freezing cold all night lol 🤣 I will certainly invest in something more snug going forward. I certainly did take something from your vid so thanks for your advice 🙂
Really interesting to see what higher end kit can do. For all the moaners, there’s no obligation to buy! Take it or leave it! Where abouts in Yorkshire is this?
-11 is cold and you need a proper 4 season bag for that although -11 is pretty close to the limit even for that more in the Expedition bag league.Coldest I've ever camped out in was -8 near Rothbury in Northumberland.
The Western Moutaineering Bison GWS Sleeping bag is what I imported from USA and has a -40 temperature rating ,bulky but if venturing up in the highest parts of the lakes/Scotland will keep you absolutely toasty warm
That was a great camp! Id love to camp like that under the stars, my kit isnt good enough for that yet. But i will start saving for this type of gear for the future.
And there is the happy, smiley, positive and motivating man we have all come to love (that was missing on the last upload). As I said last time, it just goes to show how important decent kit is on a cold camp!
I was out that night just up the hill from you but was with one of my lads so we had the terra nova ultra quazar which meant there got to 6 degrees while we cooked and only dropped as low as 1 then moved between 2 and 4 with breath - amazing the difference a 4season tent makes to the temp 😊
Great informative video on PHD gear Al, thanks for sharing.. Im also from Yorkshire (God's own country) the west side.. absolutely perfect hiking weather here this week.. too cold for all the instagram hikers.. perfect!!
Really interesting. Didnt realise PHD kit was started by the same man who started ME kit. Bought a couple of pieces of ME kit in the late 70s / early 80s. Now have plenty of that but covet the PHD kit😂
nice jacket that phd designs i use two patagonia high loft goose dwn jacket hoodies myself😚i think you had a nice calm night no wind chill or that would of tested you a bit AL
Another good video mate , I'm sitting in front of fire watching the video , from cold north Yorkshire . Skipton , I'd of been up Malham if it wasn't for the flu , Happy days always when watching your content mate . Gonna get some physio on my bust ankle this week and then ill be back out walking those Yorkshire moors and some wild camping . One day I might invest in some PHD gear. Thanks for video , cya's.
I have the PHD Minimus sleeping bag for the last eight years for Summer use which can fit into a Wiggys outerbag for colder temperatures, one thing I have my doubts about down sleeping bags is the fact that by laying on it compresses the down reducing the thermal qualities significantly. You’re lucky you didn’t waken to frost nip on your face as you should have worn a full face balaclava and a diy fleece frost guard against your breath frosting the sleeping bag. Anyway keep up the thoughtful content, cheers. 👍
Yes you compress the down on the underside but this is where the right mat is very important so you don’t loose any heat. I just fold the brim of my hat over so it covers my eyes, cheeks and nose. It works really well👌
You definitely don't need a balaclava or frost guard in those UK temperatures 😂 (which wasn't so cold, especially without wind... it's not Antarctica). I hate to sleep wearing any hat or face covering, no matter how cold it gets wherever I am in the world. If I need to warm my head, then it's simple to pull the cords a bit tighter on the sleeping bag hood.
@ What a muppet, Globetrotter? He states it’s -11 degrees Celsius not taking into account the windchill factor as he has no tent or bivy bag, at what temperature does skin begin to freeze? Answer it starts at -0.55 degrees Celsius! Isn’t it your bedtime anyway?
@@warrenstanford7240 You obviously have a screw 🪛 loose. Here you forgot this 🧠. Your body is not made of ice or tin cans, but filled with warm blood and circulating constantly! 😀 Laying inside a very highly insulting bag such as the PHD and added down jacket, pants, and booties... you're not in any way going to be cold or get frostbite! 😂 Any explorer knows that the face can also take drastically colder temperatures than other extremities, as long as the core body temperature remains insulated. There was also zero wind factor that night to drastically lower temperatures anyway. I can assure you that there is zero problem sleeping in these temperatures with the right gear and no need for balaclava or silly vapour masks. In fact...I was sleeping outside on a Scottish mountain this same night in lower temperatures with my whole head uncovered outside the sleeping bag. We're not talking Antarctica or the north face of K2...we're talking about a pleasant calm and starlit windless night in Yorkshire.

Hi Matt you need to practice standing on one foot more often lol Also please bring out Blue when it is not to cold he is fun to watch Love your content I always recommend you to friends
Yeah the cost of these products vary because they are custom made to suit you. Dependant on the sizes chosen and other options like zips, hoods, down fill, materials etc etc 👍
@@BUSHMANandBLUEafter buying another pair of Keb trousers, buying that bag, Vic would have sleeping in it in the outhouse. But! If I say to her that you recommend it!!! 👍😂
Yes it is all ultralight and for me it really helps as I’m very fit but struggle with 18kg or more so having this kit allows me to carry my camera gear etc.
I'm so envious of anyone who has a working body. I've tried so hard to get fit enough to go out walking, not to your heady heights, but my flipping knees and hips give me a lot of trouble due to arthritis. Got a new one of each so just two more to go. Hey ho!
Eskimos sleep naked under skins and fur. I do too.but feather and down duvet. Less restricted. Then they also eat lots of animals fat.whale and seal No fire I sleep all year found with the bedroom windows open. After minus7 celcius i put a wooly hat on. Once camped in Dec colorado at minus 30..... Bigger problem was the water bottles freezing. Because that was 20 degrees colder than my kitchen freezer

Taking away the windchill factor really helps with a tent. Luckily no wind this night😬
Lovely little camp. On your previous bivi camp (vid before the previous one) you were using a small black pack. What size was that?
Great informative video on PHD gear Al, thanks for sharing.. Im also from Yorkshire (God's own country) the west side.. absolutely perfect hiking weather here this week.. too cold for all the instagram hikers.. perfect!!
Didnt know the phdesigns story. Been wearing my dads old Mountain Equipment jacket from the 70's last week. Still the warmest jacket ive worn
Yes Mountain Equipment used to be made in the UK. It will last forever if you look after it👍👍👍
Not even a bivvy! Legend😄🚬☕
Check out buffalo a company in sheffield
Nice one! What were you wearing under the jacket? Imagine layer next to skin is pretty important too. And a fleece?
How much is all that kit worth??
A lot of money
Looked a tad cold lol 😂 I do love simple camping. Great video buddy. About time we had a bushcraft one.
Thanks. I prefer the simplicity 👊
Can you test the best man made products at this temperature as a comparison? Regards.
Superb Al!
I hope it heals soon mate. I’m still struggling with my ankle after badly twisting it in July.
@@BUSHMANandBLUE Always great to hear back from you mate.
Would have been nice to see the stars you were talking about mate

Hi Matt you need to practice standing on one foot more often lol
Also please bring out Blue when it is not to cold he is fun to watch
Love your content I always recommend you to friends
😂 I best take up yoga. Cheers Chief👊
I'm glad they sent you this gear I love your reviews
@bushmanandblue
Looking at 1 day and hike pack
Been recommended the Ortlieb Atrack 45L. Packing wisely that is.
Whats ya thoughts pls
Them boots must’ve been cold in the morning 😂😂
😂
Why do UA-camrs never mention the cost of everything they get for free. Great videos by the way.
Embarrassment. ?
Yep, agree with the prices of this kit !
Yeah the cost of these products vary because they are custom made to suit you. Dependant on the sizes chosen and other options like zips, hoods, down fill, materials etc etc 👍
looked like you were auditioning for River Dance when you were flattening that snow !!! great video as expected !!
😂 I can chuck some shapes out when I need to😉
No need to be so close to the edge with no anchor. Crazy man 😂
My cousins flew from South Africa to PHD to get themselves kitted out there for their Antarctica trip.
A grand for a sleeping bag for the UK... 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Looked like an awesome night out Al, im surprised you didn't use a bivi bag, is your PhD bag made of their waterproof material?
It was a very dry night with completely clear skies so not needed. Loved it… so peaceful 😬
What did you use to stop your nose and cheeks from getting severe frostbite while you slept? 🥶
I pull my Woolley hat down over my eyes and nose. Always works really well👊
@@BUSHMANandBLUE Somple but effective 👌🏼
That bag you have your gear in Al, is about the same size as the bag is use for my food.
😂😂😂 imagine if you had this bag then you would have more space for more food😂
@@BUSHMANandBLUEafter buying another pair of Keb trousers, buying that bag, Vic would have sleeping in it in the outhouse. But! If I say to her that you recommend it!!! 👍😂
put your boot in side your boot when left out side stops creepy crawlies and water getting in them
this is interesting. as my back can't lug 20kg up a mountain anymore this minimal approach is on the money
Yes it is all ultralight and for me it really helps as I’m very fit but struggle with 18kg or more so having this kit allows me to carry my camera gear etc.
Unbelievable, seriously 👍
When morning arrived I thought the video had turned into an adaptation of Kafka's Metamorphosis...
I'm so envious of anyone who has a working body. I've tried so hard to get fit enough to go out walking, not to your heady heights, but my flipping knees and hips give me a lot of trouble due to arthritis. Got a new one of each so just two more to go. Hey ho!
You say exciting, I say crazy. Lol. Glad you don't put blue through all this. Stay safe my friend.
😂 it was actually one of my most peaceful camps I’ve ever had
phd is buy once, cry once gear. its a proper investment.
Yes that’s the saying I use👊
Eskimos sleep naked under skins and fur. I do too.but feather and down duvet. Less restricted.
Then they also eat lots of animals fat.whale and seal
No fire
I sleep all year found with the bedroom windows open.
After minus7 celcius i put a wooly hat on.
Once camped in Dec colorado at minus 30.....
Bigger problem was the water bottles freezing. Because that was 20 degrees colder than my kitchen freezer
When you put specs on for each item please put the retail price up for each item 👍👍
I never do as prices for kit always change and it’s all easy enough to find online.
Alan, as I’ve said before the PH designs gear looks incredible but are not feasible at those prices for many people.
Obviously, but when you’re spending £50k to climb Everest an extra couple grand for the best kit to help you succeed in your challenge is worth it👌
@ 100% agreed for Himalayas etc. Not convinced required in UK but if they send me a set I’m willing to test them.
I usually put my boots in my bivvy bag, there’s nothing worse than frozen boots.
