I think like a lot of people who watch you Paul, I've always been 'yeah, yeah ' chuck it in because it's been drilled in that's what you do but never expect it's gonna happen to you.....well one slip, a broken wrist and now 9 screws in it I'm glad I did !
    Take care out there everyone.x

Micro spikes are great, I'm a big fan and I'd definitely recommend them to anyone for any icy walks 👌 I've had a set for a year or so, but never got chance to use them last year as we had a fairly mild winter in Poland (it's years since we had a proper winter, like when I once walked the missus to work in -24°C temps here in Warsaw) 🥶 But we've just spent 10 days over the New Year in the hills of northern Czechia, with a good lot of snow and ice, and the micro spikes were amazing, invaluable even, they literally made some impassable routes passable - when other people were having to find ways around the ice, or were falling like flies on one particular patch, we just strolled straight up/down the path without any worries 😎 The spikes give you real confidence, it's great being able to take a step on icy ground without the fear that you'll fall over and possibly hurt yourself. For the price, and the weight, they're definitely worth taking with you on winter walks 👍

I always carry a wet meal and an emergency ration heater. A warm meal is essential in cold weather.

I cannot wait till I retire. All these crystal clear snow days and I'm sat indoors chained to the laptop. At least it gives me chance to acquire the decent gear for when I do.
As someone has also said, I would change the mud baskets on the walking poles for the wider snow baskets. Gaiters are a must in snow as well. I've carried a winter bivvy shelter (OEX 4 person) for years now, and always plan to be out for at least 24 hours, cos you never know one day you might be.
One thing you really need is lots of fluids. Some think because it's cold you don't sweat so much, but the opposite if true. You still lose water through sweat and breathing, particularly when ploughing through deep snow with a decent weight of kit hanging off you. you need to keep this water insulated so it doesn't freeze.
I've even got 2 sets of ski goggles, one with a tinted lens for daylight and one for nightime or poor light conditions. I wear glasses so I need the OTG variety.

I keep a storm shelter in my pack. I was taking some younger (in their 30s) friends to the crashed Superfortress on Bleaklow and they were laughing at me for carrying so much gear when they had carrier bags with tins of beer. An hour later the weather had changed, they’d been arguing about who would wear my spare waterproofs, and we were sat in my shelter drinking my flask of hot Vimto.

Hi Paul. Pretty much everything I carry. People my laugh, think its a bit of over kill, but it's not necessarily just to be used by yourself. You never know when you may see someone else out and about that might need it.

Paul, back when we used canvas pup tents, we used one candle to heat the tent inside. It was great and we had to be careful not to fall asleep and leave the candle burning. We didn’t want it to cause trouble. Nice storm shelter. Right, don’t spill water into the nether regions. “Hot coffee is hot,” on the side of the Macdonald’s coffee cup. Thanks for sharing, instructing and demonstrating…from an old veteran, retired in the US, foothills of the Smoky Mountains.
P.S. Is the storm shelter sometimes referred to as a “Bothy”?

I'm a bit of a buffoon. I look for ways to replace the rush I got in the Marines. Cycling is one of them. I have a purpose built winter bike that I use here in NE Japan. I pack a lot of what you carry on my bike. Even though I'm mostly commuting from work/home and vice versa, a snowstorm can come up suddenly during my 3 mile trip. A few times I've found myself hunkered down behind a wall or trees during a gale, brewing up something until it calms down. Stove, water, broth and tea along with fire starting kit. That survival shelter looks like something to add to the kit. Like I said, buffoonery is my pastime, along with camping and bicycle touring. Thanks for the demonstration.

If you fancy a lighter thermal flask, check out the trail series from hydro flask. Absurdly lightweight and still very effective. They can't take as many knocks, but they weigh like a nalgene bottle so it makes having boiling along a no brainer.
