Anyway, the animation is really good, the designs and lighting conveyed the proper atmosphere throughout, and the gruesome presumable death was well realized and fittingly uncomfortable. But I have to question meaning, as most would, unless this was truly about not eating the wrong thing
The fisherman became the fish. It's like the predatory creature lives in a sort of reverse world, hence him being on the bottom of the pier with his natural position facing upwards. The foreshadowing in this is great.
I gotta say this used to SCARE the shit outta Me when I was little. But now that I'm older and grew the balls to watch it again, I can now appreciate it as a really good animated video, mainly for when it was made I mean good on ya, but still I find it creepy as hell, I can see see the beauty in the animation, good job man ;)
@Ellie M Don't know if you still exist but twenty year-olds today were four years old in 2004 and Toy Story is chronologically closer on the timeline to the moon landing than it is to the present day. Time flies, people die fast, life is short... Even if it is the longest thing anyone's ever done.
Yeah the animation was good, but like now I’m too scared to go fishing and I fell like there’s something in my throat. So he could of animated some thing that dosnt creep the shit out of me
Thank you! With animation, every second is precious (& difficult!). Watching it now, I feel the timing could be a bit tighter overall... but I'm glad you didn't get too bored!
+Jason Bennett is this just supposed to be interesting? I mean, it was! I just don't get it if it is at all to be gotten, I suppose...if that sounds right n is understandable. lol I was gonna say I enjoyed it, but it sumhow sounds wrong , but I did tho cuz it kept me watching.
+Jason Bennett I know art isn't something that can be explained, but sometimes a interpretation of the artist is really satisfactory, please, tell us more. Amazing animation!
Maybe the fish had evolved to have acid-proof scales or somethin. I mean, the big fish mama sure as Hell looks fierce. Like the 2006 Host monster, the Gwoemul. Yea, I know this comment is from three years ago. Whatever.
I find it amazing how the human conscience works. You find something like this, watch it, and even though it is twisted, you can't possibly look away. You have to see what happens, you have to see how it ends. Wether it's the music, animation, art style, story, what ever it is, it hypnotizes you. It sticks to your mind and refuses to be removed. Also, on an unrelated note, nice monster design, I like it =3
Nothing has ever scared me more than parasites, or something else eating you from the inside out. It's pretty hard to get something out of your body without causing physical damage to yourself, at least quickly enough so that whatever's killing you can't do so. All you can do is essentially hope someone can help you in some way before any damage is caused, and even if minimal damage *is* caused after the disease/parasite exits your body, if the damage's inside you its pretty hard to fix. A bug eating your skin can be swatted at, picked off or simply squished. A bug in your stomach, or worse, your skull, will thrive for as long as it pleases, or until you're cut open.
@TheBenhayden Thanks for the kind words! Rather an overt message, I wanted to use visual narrative to show a natural event/cycle. I was mainly interested in conveying a mood- lonely, harsh, beautiful, & interwoven. I'm fascinated by evolution and the unique designs it produces (as well as the mystery of fishing), and I hoped these factors were enough to make an interesting short. I'm sorry to disappoint if you're looking for a concise moral/message... "chew your food" might have to suffice. ;)
Moral of this story: Get strong so that you can fight off big monsters, plus when he got grabbed he should have covered his mouth instead of hitting the monsters arms.
This is now one of my favorite videos... and I found it by searching up "weird video compilations". Awe-inspiring, surreal, beautiful, and creepy all at the same time. :)
Personally I love this short film. The creatures both the fisherman and what ever that monster was are fascinating to look at. The fisherman may have some connection to birds. He threw some of his bait to a bird, his face resembles a bird, and even the way he eats is similar to a predatory bird.
One of my favorite animations. This is so awesome. The fisher that was fished unbeknownst to him, so twisted. I keep re-watching this, even years later. Jason PLEASE make and post more, you are so talented!!!
At first i thought i'd never seen this before, but then i saw the creature spit that thing into the water and i was like "ohh god repressed memories are coming back. Something horrible is going to happen to that fisherman"
Anyone else remember seeing this animation years back and being scared by it? I remember. And this still scares me. Makes me think of some alien world, I swear I've seen that fish-monster before... EDIT: The fish-monster reminds me of the monster from the 2006 "The Host" horror film! I knew it looked familiar!
Jason Bennett, I really love your work, it was well done and such beautiful art doesn't need an explanation as to me it was self explanatory. The creatures and the setting looks apocalyptic. It was creepy but still cool
I first watched this when I was a kid. It came to my mind suddenly and decided to look it up after what has to be like around 7 years, since I remember that I liked it. Still a very nice animation.
Okay. I think I might have a theory as to what this could all mean. Keep in mind, this viewpoint is entirely subjective, and that you should take it with a pinch of salt. By the way, I know I may or may not be writing this at 1 a.m., and I might also come off as an English teacher analysing something that may have no hidden meaning at all, but hear me out. I feel like this short film, in my opinion, is one massive analogy for life, or at least, the life that us modern humans have created for ourselves. The pier in this sense represents the life cycle, our newborn selves and innocence being represented through the beginning of the pier which the character walks on. The massive jump he makes is representative of the challenges faced in one's life. The end of the pier is the side that is the most complexly constructed, so this could not only be in reference to the gradual increase in complexity of one's character as life progresses, but also signifies life's final stage, in which he gives the fish away to the bird above him. The fish, in this instance, I believe is meant to be symbolic of some form of a will that one passes down to their loved ones. The water is meant to represent the essentials of life, food and water, which can easily be provided for in the vast realm that the ocean carries. What lies underneath the pier, however, is representative of something way deeper then what I thought it could mean after first conceptualising about it. The monster, I feel, is symbolic to that of the unnecessary, whatever that may be. I say this in the sense that it could be representative of the non-essential aspects of life, aspects which modern humanity has established for ourselves. What is unnecessary is, of course, completely subjective depending on the person. Unnecessary, to my understanding in the context of analysing and interpreting what this could mean, would be aspects of life that encompass us all the time. Basically anything that is not diehard free from the grasp of society as a whole. Thus, when the monster ejects a fish into the water, the essentials of life, it is showing how society can take advantage of even the most basic components of the human lifestyle, things like food and water, which are normalised for us and are already presented to be 'there' for us. When the character consumes the fish, it seems like nothing is wrong at first, because it _is_ still food, right? I want you to notice as well how the monster never really goes into the water, except for when it splashes its hand against it. The fact it rarely touches it could be an epitome to how society often tries to hide itself from the fact that it is directly taking advantage of people, to distract people from the natural, unbiased human condition. When the character tries to retreat from the pier, it is an elegy against the modern human lifestyle, to distance one's self from society after the final meal has been had. The splashing of the water is a sound purposely included to attract the character, and allows them to analyse and conceptualise what it could be. This may be a reference to the fear of the unknown that comes with the concept of death. So when the character hears the splash, I believe that is symbolic of society's conceptualisations of death, and fear of the unknown. How society can take concepts like this and interpret it. Death as something to think about in itself some claim is unnecessary, so if the monster is a symbol of the unnecessary, is representative of society, who creates representations of death, and it is infiltrating the essentials of life, then it could also represent how humans conceptualise death. When the moment comes, we see the fish eating at the character. I could say that this could be an archetype of the way in which society claims its victims. The ones who cannot get away from the non-essentials for the sake of survival, and how this continues even when one knocks on deaths door. If you somehow made it to the end of this, I applaud you. This took me a literal hour to write, and I feel like I'm making absolutely no sense here, but I hope I can provide some form of a measured response as to what this video is trying to get across to us. The way I've interpreted this I may understand is edgy, but this isn't what I personally think. Instead, this is what I think the creators were establishing. If you've read this successfully, thanks for your time.
This is exactly EXACTLY what I was thinking. It reminded me of drug users. I recently had lost a friend to drug use and all it takes is one try (one fish) and you’re hooked. Same kind of thing on a broad spectrum and I absolutely love your theory on this piece.
It isn't for sure he died, he may have bled alot, the human bodies system can heal and sometimes heal by itself, but this isn't a human so rip, also human body systems have acids, so the acids would kill the fishes.
Why did bird thingy have to die? I killed them. I killed them all. They're dead, every single one of them. And not just the men, but the women and the children, too. They're like animals, and I slaughtered them like animals. I HATE THEM.
So the fisherman threw out the bait, for the fishes which feed the man for a day unbeknownst to him they had evolved to predator from prey. oh if only the man had realized his fate this poor man who threw out his lures, was about to find out that hooks don't only reside in ocean floors.
1:42 NOW YOU FUCKED UP! NOW YOU FUCKED UP! YOU HAVE FUCKED UP NOW! (Serious who the fuck eats something they literally just caught, instead of going and cooking it?)
I think it's more like a twisted take on the food chain. To me that gives the video a meaning, because to feed the offspring sacrefices have to be made. That's the message in my book.
Cook your food, kids.
Anyway, the animation is really good, the designs and lighting conveyed the proper atmosphere throughout, and the gruesome presumable death was well realized and fittingly uncomfortable.

Смысл это жадность, жадность рано или поздно погубит человека.
А мне казалось, что надо просто не жрать паразитов из моря
Ah, the circle of life. Isn't nature beautiful?
It took me a while to find this and it was almost worth it

My dad lived in florida for the later bits of his life. He liked to show me how to fish. Wish I could send him this.

(Serious who the fuck eats something they literally just caught, instead of going and cooking it?)
well he is a lizard man
almost all wild animals do so .. he's part bird...so..
I finally found this... I have been looking for this since it gave me traumatized experience watching UA-cam
Original, but kind of pointless. We sympathize with the fisherman, but too bad for him to be tricked that way.
I think it's more like a twisted take on the food chain. To me that gives the video a meaning, because to feed the offspring sacrefices have to be made. That's the message in my book.
That was like a nightmare. correction -night terror.
In America. You chew food
But on the pier. Food chews you
I thought the other creature was giving the bird guy some food that it ate earlier because he game some food to the birds , BUT NOOO
It was a trap
