I don't think it's underrated now. In retrospect people have come around that this is one of the better Bond films, and Lazenby was great in the role. I wish he'd gotten one more, but hopefully a better script than the Diamond's Are Forever that we got.

@@matthewcoupeofficialThere were some legal issues with United Artists which took several years to clear up. By the time they were ready to shoot more films, Timothy Dalton didn’t want to commit to the five more films they wanted him to sign up for. So they replaced him with Pierce Brosnan who was originally signed to play Bond in The Living Daylights.

On Her Majesty's Secret Service was the most serious and important films of the series and I feel Lazenby did an excellent job portraying Bond in that film, it was a more serious role and a pivotal role for the character. It was the only Bond film to make me shed a tear, I loved Diana Rigg as it was from her role as Emma Peel from the TV series The Avengers which she had just wrapped up prior to being in the Bond film. She just died of cancer in 2020 at the age of 82, and was still as lovely as ever. RIP 🙏 😌

Being the lifelong Bond-fan that I am, with Dalton being my absolute number one, I visited Vienna just two weeks ago and of course the opera-house where Koskow escapes. Looks still like in the movie. Drove the exact streetcar that lead to Kara's house. Had goosebumps all the time! Took the wheel, amazing. To crown my vacation, I visited James Bond Action where they showed Dalton's Aston Martin. It was great.

There's a Different cut of this film that ends on a freeze frame right after bond says we have all the time in the world, and a slow version of the song plays. It was tonally better, but I think that edit was only made for that different tv version.

  • @frozen1762

Diana Rigg was big in the 60s I guess as a sex symbol in British TV Show The Avengers (not related to Marvel). In the 60s it was her or Brigitte Bardot. So, it makes sense one of them would end up as Mrs. Bond. Still, a bad Bond movie for my taste. 40y later most people knew her as Olenna Tyrell in GOT.
Also, other lead actor from The Avengers, Patrick Macnee was in A View to a Kill as that fake butler of Bond. In the 90s/early 2000s? there was a big movie flop remake of that show starting Uma Thurman, Ralph Fiennes and none other than Sean Connery as the bad guy! A complete circle.

In the UK we differentiate between nouns and verbs by swapping a C for an S: I have a licence (noun with a C,) the DVLA license me to drive (verb with an S.) We do the same for practice/practise...(He needs more practice (noun,) He will practise (verb.) I hope that helps.

I'm glad to see that lately, Dalton is finally getting the due he deserved. He got sandwiched between 2 popular Bonds and Moore was a tough act to follow. I think Dalton is much better than Pierce Brosnan who I didn't really care for but for many of the younger generation was the Bond they grew up with and the video games from his movies were ridiculously popular and good. I just think Dalton was awesome as Bond and more people are finally talking about him more in the great Bonds conversation.

    • @user-ve5ln5le9y

Dalton was wonderful in this movie. But I admit as a teen who watched Remington Steele on TV I was among those who desperately wanted Brosnan to be the next Bond and was disappointed when it didn’t happen. I had never heard of Dalton but thought he was rather quite handsome and I liked the darker more serious emotional take on the character after the witty antics of Roger Moore. With the collapse of the Iron Curtain (not to mention Pan Am after Lockerbie) at the end of 80s, and the end of the Cold War, the Bond franchise went dormant for a while and unfortunately Dalton got caught up in the delay. I think by the time Brosnan took on the role he was a better fit, having shaken off the goofiness of Steele and been through life’s hard knocks (his wife died of cancer in the interim) he brought more toughness to the role but was better at the humour than Dalton was.

"He's pissed". I love that scene. Timothy's acting was outstanding, his ambivalence - pissed off & saddened. There were so many scenes in which, for me, he produced some of the best acting in the entire series; this one, the entire "the sniper was a woman" segment, the encounter with Pushkin in the hotel room, the meeting at the country club in which Dalton does a fine job - without saying much, communicating with M with his eyes and also showing he doesn't buy Koskov's bs.... Glad you appreciate George Lazenby, he's wildly underestimated. It took a while, but today On Her Majesty's Secret Service is regarded as one of the best Bond movies, directed by the former - and returning - Bond editor Peter Hunt. As a former Sergeant in the Royal Australian Army Commandoes, Lazenby was the only Bond actor competent in combat technique. The stuntmen highly respected him, and he accidentally knocked out one of them. Lazenby gets the opportunity to make the complete Bond, who falls in love, gets married, loses his newly wedded wife, and cries over her. Sean Connery did not do that, because he was a hopeless sour puss, so Broccoli/Salzman gave that honor to the "Aussie Male Model". Lazenby was offered a contract for two more Bond films but said no. "It was the hippie era", he said. "I didn't want to play this Tory guy". His agent agreed. Still today, George Lazenby regrets it, bitterly.

    Tracey, BEST BOND GIRL EVER.
Timothy Dalton, was simply ahead of his time. He was doing the Craig thing, but unfortunately didn't have a screenplay quite as good as Casino Royale, but it's definitely full of globetrotting and exotic locales that we want from a Bond film. I think the biggest problem is that the villain isn't memorable. Also, people still had Roger Moore's Bond in mind and weren't ready for a more serious take on the character. If the Moore Bond films hadn't become so outrageous I think Dalton's films would have gotten a better reception; Bond had become too much of a joke in the mind of most people.

Bond's rifle in _The Living Daylights_ is a Walther (seems to favor this manufacturer for some random reason I'm sure Ian Fleming didn't understand 😄) WA 2000 sniper rifle. The design is somewhat unusual because it's of a "bullpup" configuration that allows for a relatively short rifle to have a full-length barrel. Basically, the grip and trigger are moved forward, while the rear of the rifle takes the place of the stock. Naturally, the magazine well (for the magazine or box of ammo) is moved to the rear behind the grip and trigger, the barrel is also moved to the rear. It looks a bit odd, but functions much like a regular rifle.

Casino Royale was a great movie but I had no idea it was a prequel because I had not seen the beginning until later on and read it was a prequel. It really didn't make sense though other than the intro scenes because on the boat with Vesper and she was talking to him about the burden of having killed so many men. That is a talk you have with someone who has been in the game for years and he was mentally drained and needed retirement. That made no sense for a brand new agent whose entry to 00 status was to make his first kill.

For some reason haven't seen the last one and really just felt no desire to. Not really sure why though.

For some reason the Timothy Dalton films don't have the production value of the other Bond films, IMO. They feel like Bond knockoff films. However, British actress Maryam d'Abo (Kara) is lovely in "The Living Daylights". Her cousin is actress Olivia d'Abo. Timothy Dalton is also known form the film "Flash Gordon" (1980). You have seen him in "Hot Fuzz" of course.

Lazenby could’ve/should’ve been the Bond of the 70s, IMO, and Dalton for the 80s. Roger Moore was just too much of a pacifist IRL, and it showed in his portrayal. He wasn’t believable as a cold-blooded killer to me, and his fight scenes were so laughable. However, his films did have great theme songs.

I think BECAUSE it's so despised, that I have a soft spot for On Her Majesty's Secret Service. They took some bold moves and changed the formula. It went over as well as "New Coke". Still, I admire their (momentary) show of courage in taking Bond in a new direction. I think if this movie was exactly the same but the protagonist was not James Bond® the movie would have been better thought of. Connery is a tough act to follow. Eventually audiences got used to Moore, Dalton, Brosnan and the other Bonds, but George Lazenby had the toughest job of all - being Connery's direct replacement. He and his only Bond movie deserved better. Just my contrarian opinion. 😏

On Her Majesty's Secret Service is my favorite classic Bond movie. Even if Lazenby isn't the best Bond. (though i still think he's excellent)
It's certainly the most well-directed of the classic Bonds. With lots of modern filmmaking flourishes which disappear from the franchise for a stupidly long time afterwards.

  • @mikebrown7799

Hello Jen!😊 They had a rocky relationship with George Lazenby. When he showed up at the premiere of the film looking not very Bond like in a mustache and beard it signaled to them he was not a team player. They felt he had no respect for the character post filming. He had a contract for 4 or 5 Bond films, but his agent convinced him the films were on there way out due to the feminist movement. Telly Savalas (Blofeld) is best known from the 70s TV crime drama "Kojak" in which he starred. Diana Rigg (Tracy) was best known from the 60s British TV espionage series "The Avengers". In her later years she guest starred on the fantasy drama TV series "Game of Thrones". Nice reactions to Lazenby's only performance as Bond, Jen!!!!🎬👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

The atypical Bond movie...he marries the girl. Also IMHO Diana Rigg is the best 'Bond Girl' ever. I believe that this marriage is referenced in only one other Bond film, 'License to Kill'...where he also 'resigns' from MI6/Universal Exports...after a fashion. To answer one of your questions....The first film I saw Timothy Dalton is was the so bad it becomes an unintentional comedy 1980's Flash Gordon.

Dalton had to go to the hospital to get it reattached. Benicio felt awful, but Dalton never made a big deal about it. They both agreed to use a real knife in the scene.

As a huge fan of, and repeated reader of, the novels, OHMSS is the most-faithful to the source material; and I always found Lazenby (aside from the one-liners) the most like I personally pictured Bond when reading, while Dalton the most in character as the Bond of the novels.
... and Dame Diana Rigg!! 👀😍😍😍
