The smartest passenger was the ship's cat. One of the crew members that took care of the cat, saw her taking her kittens off the ship before it left Ireland. He saw that as a bad omen and left the ship and took the cat home.

As a child in Europe I had an interest/fascination with the Titanic solely because of the architecture, they simply do not build ocean liners anymore. Carnival cruise barges do not count!
Then I looked into the Britannia, Lusitania et cetera. The Italian ships definitely had class even into mid century modern era.

As to your comment about it being outside the norm to feature the Titanic on this site, remember the description of ships of this era: "when country houses went to sea." I feel that showing these ships, the large NYC apartments of Marjorie Merriweather Post and John D. The radio man on the other ship kept trying to warn Titanic re: the icebergs but the Titanic radio man was so busy sending out the First Class passengers' telegrams that he asked him to keep quiet. Bcz of this rudeness, the other radio man turned off his radio. Thusly, no help arrived.

Intriguing point you said Ken --that the staircase was ejected from the ship through the glass dome. I have NEVER heard that!!. Been to, read , and seen most everything that's been said about the Titanic since Ballard discovered it in '85. NO ONE ever even remotely hinted at that comment concerning the staircase. Points to bring to your attention -
The Titanic blasted the californian to shut , get off the wireless earlier.
The wireless shut down at night and very wisely the Californian stopped for safety
because she was in the middle of a ice field very smart .
The californian wireless worked their full day
and didn't't want to be rudely treated yet again. The Marconi Wireless was a private company and service, not cosidered to be part of ship saftey , rather a. Luxery for passangers .
The Titanic arrogantly & STUPIDLY blasted forward through a ice field . Just like Oceangate both acted with actions that got them their front page headlines , ignoring saftey and sound advice . Place blame where it blongs .
Food for thought ,and thanks for your excellent work ,well done.

At time mark, 5:55, the "fire damage" point to the location of the first class swimming pool, and the dark spot was just a shadow in the photo, the fire was taken place nearly directly below the starboard bridge wing at and just below water level. The fire in fact saved the ship (even tho unplanned), for when she hit the iceberg she was listing about 10 degree to port, the iceberg hit starboard, as the flooding happen, she was pulled to list about 15 degree to starboard. Without the fire causing the firemen to dig out the coal on one side of the ship, Titanic would had capsized before the first lifeboat was launch.

I have been fascinated by the Titanic ever since I read the Clive Cussler book Raise the Titanic when I was twelve. When she was discovered, I religiously watched the News for every glimmer of information I could get, and I still have the National Geographic that detailed the expedition. When the Titanic exhibition came to the museum of science and industry in Chicago, I went and was blown away. They had the biggest peice of her hull that had been brought up, completely with portholes and nearly was kicked out because I stepped over the rope barrier and touched her hull. I simply couldn't stop myself. But the most amazing thing was they were selling little lumps of coal that had been brought up. It's one of my prized possessions. I will never walk on her decks, I will never sleep in one of her cabins, but I have touched her, and I have my own little piece of her. She was inarguably the most famous ship of all time.

I did everything you did except the Big Piece had guards around it when I went. But the Museum did have a piece of the hull one could touch and I picked it up. Touching a ship that I had read so much about was a thrill. That opened up interest in ocean liners for me and I still read and watch whatever I can. P.S. Ken- The fire was in the coal bunker not engine room.

That's because a lot of the Titanic's cutting edge safety features were compromised in the interest of having more open space and luxury on the upper decks for example, titanic was originally designed with 48 lifeboats but in the interest of having views of the ocean for the first class they brought the total down to 20, and the "watertight compartments" only went up to E deck so the upper decks could have more open space

I sailed 4 times on the SS Norway (formerly SS France), an ocean liner from decades ago and refurbished to much of it's original glamour for cruising the Caribbean until it was scrapped after a explosion in the boiler room that killed a couple workers. That ship was luxurious, majestic and classy, just like the Titanic. I loved that ship and haven't cruised since it was towed to the ship's graveyard to be torn apart. There are no cruise ships like that anymore. Now they are all theme parks on water. No thanks! This was very interesting. It reminded my of the Norway.

I've watched many programs about Titanic but don't remember ever hearing about a ship refusing to help! Tragic!

    • @MahalaniM
      @MahalaniM Рік тому +1

Because that's not correct. The Californian didn't refuse to help they simply didn't know what was going on.
They only had one radio operator and his shift had ended for the night and he had gone to bed. So they didn't hear any of the Titanic's distress calls. There was no law at the time that required 24hr rotating shifts. That became mandatory because of the Titanic.
There is still debate on exactly how far away the Californian was from the Titanic. The captain at the time said 19 miles. The crew on board did see some rocket being fired but to them it did not look like distress signals.
Once the radio operator started his shift in the morning, and they figured out what had happened they immediately rushed to try to assist.
But taking into account the distance, the time to restart the engines, travel through the ice field the harsh reality is even if the Californian had reacted immediately, they probably still would not have made it in time.

This is an interesting look at the various classes’ experiences. Some of those images are new to me. One that is not though, the dark mark at 5:55 is believed to be a reflection of the rocky outcrop, seen in the lower left of the photo, diffusely reflected in the hull, not a result of the internal fire. One can vaguely make out other such reflections of the ground around the hull too. I refer you to the wonderful Oceanliner Designs channel for more information on this common misconception.

To be honest 3rd class living was pretty good. Accommodations were tight, but they’d never seen such food. It was endless. Now the California was not the non caring ship everyone’s been taught about. They simply had the common sense to stop for the night in the ice field. Titanic had ignored some ice warnings received through out the day on the 14th. They did make course corrections because of others. One for sure never made it out of the wireless room to the bridge. They were too busy working sending messages for first class passengers, many of whom would never see the lights of NY. Now back to the California, they had heard that Titanic should be passing by. They did see 8 sporadically fired rockets, but remember this was Titanic’s first voyage. It was thought they were having quite the celebration. Emergency, or distress rockets were to be fired in 1 minute intervals by law. By doing so this would have been internationally understood as a distress call. They also said they watched throughout the early morning hours sailing out of sight. In fact what they had witnessed was the sinking. They probably 10 miles apart. Wireless communications were not typically monitored after 10:00 PM. This is why the California never received calls for help. The California in fact had sent ice warnings to Titanic saying they were stopped for the night in pack ice. Titanic’s response to the wireless operator on the California was, “shut up, I’m working Cape Race”. That is as mentioned before, they were sending messages for 1st class passengers through Newfoundland. Well the California wireless shut down his set being close to 10:00PM. The first calls for help were sent out, using CQD & the new SOS code at 12:40AM. The wireless operator on board the Carpathia had done everything but shut down his set. He happened to be finishing his duties when he heard the familiar buzzing coming from his headset laying on his desk. He picked up headset putting it on. He wound up writing all the information as quickly as he could to get to the bridge. Well, the rest is history. It would be 4 hours before Carpathia would arrive amongst the ice, flotsam and lifeless bodies in life jackets. The Carpathia was soon met by a parade of life boats, all that remained of the largest, most majestic ship that had ever sailed to that time. Just my 2¢ worth.
