  • Hey everyone!!! This is the last stage of our 3 day painting. The object of today is to try and work on top of our initial drawing and underpainting, respecting the decisions that we previously made, but being mindful that we can't be too precious with them. Ideally, initial stages should instruct us in how to deal with subsequent layers with more commitment and fearlessness. That way our final layer of paint still feels fresh, expressive and responsive!

Hey all!!! We want to thank you all for being super cool and supportive with your comments. We're aware that we have tons of things we could improve upon, but hey, this is just a start and with time we will work hard at trying to do better! I know a lot of you are asking for daily real time videos, BUUUUT, we feel for now this is the best option. For one, the camera angle, which is really nice (it has virtually no distortion or glare) would be impossible to maintain during a live video because my big head would constantly stick in front of the camera. I know a lot of you really dig my baldness, but I don't want to responsible for blinding anyone with the glare. Right now, for about 80% of my painting time I have to keep a crazy good posture so I don't creep into frame. And because these are smaller paintings if I want to do some level of detail I have to get my head up in there! So again, 4 hrs of unedited painting would be awesome, but they would really be 3 hrs of painting and 1 hr of risking permanent blindness. And finally, we're flattered with all the love you guys give to us, but trust me, even Dani can't take 4hrs of my daily yapping. After week 2 I'd have a sore throat and you guys would most def be scrubbing thru my videos and for sure muting them :) So lets give this a shot! Promise I'll always try to talk about what I feel is most important during the painting session. Remember this is a 2 year marathon! Love to all!

I was about to suggest "Full Length Fridays" for those of us who REALLY loved to watch you paint for hours on end on IG (I managed to save some of your videos and often play them in the studio while I paint, like we were painting buddies), but I guess you're right: it's technically difficult.
Keep it up, ok? You're awesome, this channel is awesome, the whole project is exhilarating and super stimulating!

Could you talk about and show your palette as you work? The way you mix color etc? I bet people would enjoy a video just of that.

    Gracias

I just watched this at the gym before I go home to paint - literally had me laughing out loud and nodding emphatically while I was on the elliptical. The whole sense of a painting not as a product but an experience is essential and you are demonstrating it beautifully!

It was really nice to hear about how, having more than just a 'face' or putting focus on the whole pieces rather than relying on one elements can benefit the painting and perspective of it in so many more ways. Thank you for this wonderful insight! I've not even finished this video and I've already been able to take great advice from it, much appreciated thank you! :)

Our Painted lives is a totally awesome generous and incredibly fascinating and useful project. Given painting is my hobby and therapy (btw I really appreciate your comment about self discovery in your initial video given I'm a psychotherapist by trade) I can only get to these on the weekend but intend to watch them all. There is too much to say about what is wonderful about this video but I love how you build up from the underpainting but are also not bound by it, also the constant awareness of the paint, its tone, value and shape. Thank you so much to you and Dani. I hope to be able to buy one but fear that given I will see them days later I may not be able to but it doesn't matter in the end if they go your project is supported.

Thank you for the content! I really have enjoyed the process of these 3 videos and to hear your thoughts! I look forward to more. I think they are pretty great as they are. I do enjoy longer videos to listen to as I create to keep me company, and as a relaxation on days I am not able to create. I love watching other artist's process and thoughts. So inspiring. Thanks also for stating the hours of work on your piece. I think with time lapse its easy to think that art doesn't take that long or someone else is doing it faster or has an easier time painting. I usually have longer larger pieces going but also do the quick paintings or drawings as well to keep up with a daily practice. sometimes my daily painting isn't much just a few values added to a larger piece. Both filming and editing are quite a long process as well!

It would be nice if you could write the name of the artists you talk about in the videos somewhere (in the screen on in the video description) so we can check them out later. You have a very good diction, but a lot of the times I can't figure out the non american names. Thanks again! Keep up the great work.

Really interesting to watch how you lay down paint... directional, drawing it in, working from middle values than adding darker & lighter over it... your limited palette (love your greens... going to try your yellow). Do you add any medium to your top layers? And how long do you wait before varnishing? Looking forward to all your videos!
