After watching this video, I purchased one on ebay from Japan. impressed with the construction and sharp photos, looking forward to b&w shots in street photography
I am using one on a Sony A99 and find it really good on digital FF. I do have the squared lens hood for it too and this reduces flare considerably. Stopped down a bit, this lens is sharp across the frame. Just subscribed, so looking forward to more of your content.
Thanks for the sub. :) I’ve been thinking about making a short follow up taking a bit of a closer look at this lens (although a have an entire shelf full of lenses begging for me to make videos about them)
I love mine! It's significantly better than earlier Super-Takumar 28/3.5 with 58mm filter thread, redesigned optical formula and better coatings did their trick. I use it mostly on film, as you do, and there, it works like a charm, even on colour film.
Thanks. Most of that was done with a plugin for Final Cut Pro that I built myself. There’s a free and a more advanced paid version on my website (gearhead.online) if you’re a FCP user.
Found you recently, great variety to your channel 👌. Interesting review on the 28mm Tak👍. I wonder if the reducer is affecting things only using mine on the APS-C Fuji X-T3 it’s insanely sharp when stopped down f/8+. True of most of the Taks .Enjoying your channel 🤠
I was concerned that the reducer was having a significant impact… but, seeing how the macro-super-tak 50mm f/4 performed with the focal reducer kind of put that idea to rest for me. Now I want to revisit the 28mm and see if there was something I’m missing.
Love the sample images w Takumar 28mm f 3.5 lens. The B&W images are sharp and well defined. Shooting film is a bit more work & cost, but well worth it. Attaching the lens to a digital cam works but better for film. well done ❤
Hey, I have one of those. $7 at Savers Thrift. It was hanging on the electronics wall in a little plastic bag and I swear I spotted it 20 yards away. Good Times!! (I need the hood) I just checked, actually it's the 24mm 3.5. The bummer is it doesn't seem to work with Canon DSLRs. I think the mirror would wack it.
That's a deal! I haven't tried the 24mm myself. Sucks to hear that it doesn't adapt well to Canon. I've had issues with the 50mm f/1.4 catching the mirror when focused to infinity :(
@@gearheadchannel I have one of those too but I have not tried it. I do have the 55 mm 1.8 on the 1100d and that is very close but seems to work. The 55s groups don't go past the back of the lens body when focusing and that is the difference. Your mileage may vary
Maybe you have a bad copy mine is ultra sharp But I am using it on a Pentax DSLR's which will obviously be advantageous. Also your exposure looks off.....
I love this lens. I use it on my Spotmatic F. I really get so many great images with this so I think it is a hidden gem. I’ve noticed that since I bought mine about 10 years ago the prices have really gone up. I think people are discovering them. I think a lot of these classic lenses do not translate well to digital but onfilm they are superb.
Hey! Great video! I watched it till the end, liked it and suscribed!!!! Yeah! From now on, I'm gonna watch all your videos! Came here looking for a review about the Pentax SMC 28mm f/3.5 which is pretty much the same lens but with a Pentax K mount. I have both adaptrs anyway for my Lumix GH4 and on the PK i just put an old Schneider 4x loupe and made it an awesome focal reducer and speedbooster. Only problem is, it is too bright now! Lol! Back to the lens, Someone offered me the PK version for 50 bucks which is a real bargain here in Mexico, while looking for a f/2.8 version. Should i go with the bargain or wait for a cheap 2.8 available? Greetings from Mexico!
Thanks, I’m glad you like the videos. I’ve heard that the 3.5 is actually a better lens than the 2.8, but I don’t have any personal experience with it. Also, did you just say you built your own focal reducer?
This is the 2nd lens I bought for my Fujifilm X-T1. I haven't tried it with a speed booster to get it at it's native 28mm but I love this lens. I need to take it out on photo walks more as the 42mm focal length on the APS-C body is not one I'm used to. It actually produces a surprisingly nice video quality as well.
Those Fujifilms are such sleeper hits... it's like they were hiding in the background making kick-ass cameras when nobody was looking. Takumar lenses tend to bring a certain organic magic - they're imperfect in all the right ways. I still haven't shot much video with mine yet though.
I have this lens and while I love it for many reasons it's not nearly as sharp as the Fuji 27mmf2.8. But the bokeh on the Takumar is a little nicer even at 2/3 stop higher aperture (f3.5 v f2.8). I life my Takumars for color photography on low contrast days where you can get some nice pastelly colors and such. For B&W the contrast with these older lenses sucks, everything looks flat and needs a lot of post so i think for B&W raw or jpeg use native glass.
Yeah, it definitely isn’t the sharpest lens I own. Although, in terms of contrast, it performed better than anticipated. Generally I use it with a red filter to shoot B&W film, and I like the results.
Ahhh. The Takumars. My gateway to leica glass. It was a slippery and expensive trip. Fwiw, although the leica glass is “probably” better….Stick with the Takumars and other great vintage glass. Don’t gain much for the price. Especially now
I was kinda lucky, I found all my Takumars a few years back locally… and for next to nothing. Maybe $150 for my whole set… including 2 Spotmatic bodies.
this is completely punk ? BUT CAN U TELL us SOMETIMES WHAT lens U sHHOT WITH ? It should be the lens you're talking about, can you do that ? This look's like random right now, maybe GOPRO ? :/
Looks like I totally ruined your day with this video. For that, I apologize. I've been working to be more thorough in my lens review videos since this one, and I would greatly appreciate it if you took the time to check some of them out. Regardless, thanks for your feedback. Have a great day.
@@gearheadchannel Go Pro ruins our lifes & eyes. Don't do it any more. Looked at ur Nikon zoom 35-70mm 3.5, and gush don't remember a lot about the lens video capabilities!!!! Awesome! When shooting B&W film with this lens, I generally use a red filter. Gives a little more room to stop up, and a bit of a boost to contrast.
Bought this lens yesterday. I paired it with my Fujica and currently doing my test shots on Kodak Vision3 250D. Can't wait for the results.
very fun vid! the old school look of this lens is the point of vintage glass.
