One thing people don't realize about Elvis is that he wasn't really a pedophile. The age of concent in Tennessee atcthe time was around 15 or 16. Priscilla was the only one who he dated that by today's standards was underage. She said herself that he didn't do anything sexual with her until their marriage when she was 21. And before that he had full concent from her parents. It easy to think he was interested in underage girls but you need to look I to the context.

Elvis had numerous health problems, and chronic constipation was only one of them, in fact..it dogged him all of his life. Elvis had some good times too. He enjoyed spending time with friends and family. Elvis was immensely generous to a fault. He purchased homes and vehicles for his employees. Elvis also believed in the power of prayer. He was informed by one of his female backup singers (They were called "The sweet Inspirations") that she had had tests for cancer. He was so moved by the news that he asked the other girls to leave the room and he prayed for the singer that had the testing done. He became very emotional and cried and cried hard. Thankfully the tests were negative. Elvis wanted to let Parker go, but Parker threatened to extort the Presleys for several millions if they let him go. If I had been Elvis, I would have taken a copy of the contract drawn up between himself and Parker to an attorney that could have poked holes in it and strong armed the colonel into a settlement. Once this occurred, Elvis was free to sign with a reputable co. Like William Morris. Elvis would have been able under them to pick more lucrative projects, and would have stopped playing Vegas. He could have actually been able to tour Europe, and he would have had access to specialists to help him with health related issues. I heard once that Elvis could have had surgery in order to help with his chronic constipation but feared doing it due to the possibility of the press meddling

Great reaction India! Priscilla wrote in her book "Elvis and Me" that they did do "iffy" things...she also made him into kind of a control freak. They made a movie about it. Not one of my favorites. She later admitted that when she wrote that book, part of her was still mad at Elvis. The reason she went there and met him to begin with was because she moved so much and had no friends. A friend of hers was also a friend of Elvis' and he set up the meeting. Elvis realized he could talk to Priscilla about music and what kids her age liked, and she would bring him records to listen to. They also discussed movies and actors as well. That's how Elvis kept up with everything while in the service. Is it a little weird having a friend that age? Mmm...maybe, but Priscilla herself said it was nothing more than friendship until she got older. Elvis was dating Natalie Wood. He dated Ann Margret, but then ultimately married 'Cilla, as he called her. 😎
As far as the supposed "culture stealing" goes.... that's total BS. Elvis had many, many good friends of ALL races and cultures. Most people I do, I think. But look at James Brown talking about Elvis. It's on UA-cam....he stated, "Say what you want. I KNEW him. I KNEW him...." BB King said the same thing basically. King also stated that once music is out there in the world, it belongs to everybody to enjoy. "anybody can do anbody's song of they want to. Anybody can add to a song or add to, or change the arrangement and make it their own in that way. That's all Elvis did."
Getting back to James Brown though. He was at Elvis' funeral and he cried so hard. He stayed by Elvis' casket for the entire viewing, even as fans were let into Graceland to view the body. When it was time to close the casket and go to the cemetery (where Elvis was interred until October of '77) Jane refused to leave. They literally had to pull him away from his friend's casket. James was inconsolable. he talked very fondly of his friend Elvis... "I miss that man." Elvis and boxing great Mohammed Ali were buddies too. As well as Elvis and football great Jim Brown. Everyone who met and or knew Elvis really KNEW him. Elvis was a complex man.

I am glad to see you enjoying the movie. As a fan of Elvis for 50 years the movie gave a little of his life. Elvis loved his fans and he loved to have fun as a big practical joker with a big laugh. His people have said "he wasn't depressed as the movie shown" truthfully only God knows. The two women in his life near the end were Linda Thompson who later married Bruce Jenner (Catlin Jenner) and Ginger Alden. Which the movie did not detail because of Warner Bros. His daughter was at Graceland the day he died she had last saw him around midnight when he found her still up. Lisa has said " he kissed her head and put her back in her bed after midnight, that was the last time she saw him alive." She did see his body when everyone was rushing in and out the bathroom. Tom Parker was a snake plain and simple (just like Don King did to Muhammad Ali.) Vernon Presley was a good man but, not a business man and called on Priscilla to help him after Elvis died. Priscilla took over Elvis Presley Enterprise after Vernon died and made it into what it is today. There is more but like I tell a lot of people enjoy the movie but, do your research on Elvis if you want a deep dive.

I was sorry to see you cry about Elvis's life, he had many many good times but you are correct "When his mother died, some of his heart died to"
Elvis's mom was super protective, since his twin died a birth and she could not have any more children.
His father went to prison for forging a check in the early 1940s and Elvis started having "night terrors"his mother said (sleep walking) so he developed insomnia as a child afraid to sleep.
This was a lifelong problem for him chronic insomnia.
He was born with a congenital ganglionic fold in his colon-commonly called a "twisted colon"
and as he aged this area narrowed more and more until it produced problems for him pain and constipation. He needed that part of his colon removed in 1975 but because it was risky back then(and because he was so Elvis) no doctor wanted to do the operation.
By the time he was 40 he also had severe glaucoma, arthritis in his neck and spine, high blood pressure. He developed the idea that any med that came from a doctor could have no negative effect so his dependence on pain meds, and meds to wake him and to put him to sleep got worse. Sad cycle that has hurt many people and their families.
I also want to point out that dating someone as young as Priscilla was when they met was not that uncommon in this era-today the standards are super different.
In the 1940s,50s, 60s... many states allowed adolescent women to get married at ages 12 or 14 with parental consent, by the mid-1970s most states required that young women be at least 16 if they were to be married. In the south especially women married very very young.
Country Icon Loretta Lynn got married to her husband at age 15 and had only known him for a month. Her husband was 7 years older than her.

He did meet his wife at 14 bit didn't marry her until she was 21. 9 months to the day Lisa Marie was born. Back in the 50s and prior girls got married at 13 14 15 often especially in poor communities. Jerry Lee Lewis married his 13 year old cousin and they had a baby. Elvis didn't have sex with pricella until the wedding night. He wasn't a Saint because he was off with other grown women while pricella was coming of age. It's also said he didn't really want to marry her but he'd made a promise to her dad. She reminded him of his mother when he met her. She filled a gaping hole in his heart. We can't judge people from another time and culture by today's standards. What you read wasn't exactly true. He did eat to much he was constipated but he had real diseases. Mega colon, glocoma, enlarged heart, and several others. The fact that he was found in the bathroom that way says he died quickly. God called him home. Elvis was so swollen with water weight he'd look 20 to 30 pounds lighter or heavier day to day. Look closely at his last concert. He had skinny arms and legs. The weight was in his torso and face. Elvis could not have cared less about money, which is why he got in trouble with the Colonel. He totally gave himself over to Parker and didn't care how much the guy was taking as long as he himself could take care of his family and friends and have some nice things. But when Parker's greed and fear started affecting Elvis' artistic choices, Elvis started getting sick of him. But by then it was too late. Parker had him. If he'd gone to a lawyer, he would have been rid of him easily - but Elvis didn't know that. And for him, it was too big a risk because if he lost, it wasn't just his life on the line, but also the lives of the hundreds of people he was supporting with his career. He couldn't do it. So he swallowed his pride.
The ONLY relationship that could be classified as "weird" at all was Priscilla, and they didn't have sex until they were married because he had hangups about it. He had a lot of hangups, and his psychology is a deep dive, but he was obsessed with keeping her a virgin. And they did do other things, but I'm not sure how much while he was in Germany, it's been awhile since I've read her book.
Him liking younger women had nothing to do with his sexuality, actually. He liked younger women because they didn't have careers of their own yet and so there was no conflict for their attention or time. The way he lived on the road all the time or the 2 shows a night while in Vegas, he wanted to be able to say, "I want you here or there at this time, I'll send a plane, be there", and he didn't want any extraneous responsibilities they might have to get in the way of catering to him. Not a super great attitude to have, but also not what it has been twisted into either. Younger women probably matched his emotional maturity level too, honestly, and I'm not being funny or flippant. He was a mess, but he wasn't a monster.

Like a lot of famous people, Elvis was somewhat eclectic, in that he liked younger women - which was looked a little bit differently then. That she was a virgin I believe had something to do with it too. He also said that he did not trust men he did not know, and he preferred the company of women much more whether they were romantic or just friends. And that he liked to have priscilla around and didn't consummate the relationship until they were married. We will never know the truth, but Priscilla stands by the story too. Like you said, who are we to judge? It is also known that Elvis did not like to date or have sex with women after they had children. He thought of them more as "mothers" after they had children and "different" - maybe because of the relationship he had with his own mother, but it is no surprise that most of Elvis' romantic partners were considerably younger than him. Many older ladies wouldn't put up with the lifestyle.

I got my first name from Elvis's middle name, My family has always a huge fan of his including myself. The film shows that Priscilla left him due to the drugs and girls however they broke up because she cheated on him with his Karate instructor. She did have a hand in this movie though so that would be her doing to not show it. Also Elvis's autopsy has been kept secret but will be released in the near future. Personally I think he possibly committed suicide, His story is heart breaking. Everybody took advantage of him, Most of his friends, Parker and priscilla. He will forever be in the top legends of all time RIP to the King 🤴🙏

I liked the movie. Some say Elvis stole music, etc. I disagree. Rock and Roll was in it's infancy and, in general, musicians continue to this day to remake music and make it their own. For example, Big Momma Thornton, the original singer of "Hound Dog" did not write the song. Actually, it was written by two light skin brothers. It was a hit for her and a big success for Elvis. Some entertainers have a style and ability to move music forward.

Opioids can lead to serious constipation and even bowel blockages, which are STAT emergency situations. But Col had to keep E pumping them in🙄🙄 Elvis was found on the floor of his bathroom by Ginger when she woke up at 2pm🙄
It was a very different time; it was not uncommon in the South for a girl to marry at 15 or 16. My own mother married at 17. And my father went on to become a PhD & published author many times over. Can’t judge history through today’s lens. Well… shouldn’t lol. Learn from it- YES. Judge- No. And it’s not like there was a class action group of minors brought through as with some other more contemporary creeper stars. Would he & should he be roasted for it if he did it today? ABSOLUTELY!!! 💯!!!!
But it wasn’t today- it was 60yrs ago.
As for Ginger… Leonardo DeCaprio is 23yrs older than his longtime partner/girlfriend. Pierce Brosnan 11yrs older than his wife of 26yrs. Jerry Seinfeld 17yrs older than his wife. Steven Tyler- 39yrs older than his lady, John Stamos 17yrs older…. You get the drift. If there is to be one, the questionably intentioned individual in the end wasn’t Elvis.
I hope they packed plenty of ice water in Col Tom’s casket…

One of my favorite reviews. The end you read got wrong. Elvis had chronic pain due to a rare inflammatory disease. His colon was 3 times the size of a normal persons that’s why he got constipation like that. That’s what the pills were for. Dr Nick killed him with drugs that destroyed his heart. As for Priscilla she stated that she was a virgin when she married Elvis. Elvis moved back to the US And he did not see her again until she was of age. So now there is nothing inappropriate going on because it was impossible they lived on different continents

@@timcarr6401 In the 1960s, the "age of consent" in the United States, as in many places in the world, was 16. That is when it was legally ok to have sex and get married. Yet Elvis was dating Natalie Wood and others when she was 16 and 17 AND he was living in his Las Vegas home during most of that time. So when Priscilla turned 18 then 19 is the first time Elvis and Priscilla would have gotten intimate. Noone knows EXACTLY WHEN. Yes zero sex until she was married I firmly believe.

      @marthawelch4289 Рік тому

@@stevepomeroy-rockin-pa-realtorThe determination of the age of consent that is mentioned in many comments
was based on many similar and divergent cultural, religious, practical, weather-related, economic, educationally-related considerations over thousands of years. One of the situations that played a large part in the determination of an early age of consent/marriage/childbearing was the need to have children and lots of children. [Love was not often on the list of care-abouts for marriage. Try mistresses for that.
For royals, nobles, and the rich the driver was the fact that birthing lots of children was necessary because succession of titles and responsibilities needed to be ensured and land/money needed to be passed down to keep those goodies in the family and to increase the assets by money marrying money.
The problems that made these goals more difficult were related to DEATH. Specifically, the death of the mother and the deaths of the children. Due to disease and poor hygiene (yes, even by the rich and the "educated" doctors who often arrived in the human birth room right after delivering a calf in a poop and blood soaked corral with their unwashed filthy hands). Or right after handling the vomit, diarrhea, and lung contents of plague victims. If infections didn't cause death the physicians/midwives were often rough in their manipulations of the baby - tearing tissues, bones, etc. of the mothers and babies. These conditions often led to losing one out of two babies or young children and/or a sadly large percentage of young mothers. And many times the young brides were not yet physically mature enough to successfully carry and deliver a healthy baby. And to remain alive themselves.
For poor people - farmers, miners, pretty much everybody - the goal was the same. Families needed lots of children to work the land, dig the salt mines, etc. The problems in successfully making these children in poor families were the same as those in rich families - high baby and mother death rates.
Therefore, you had to get the females young - right after their first period. They were then determined to be ready to have sex and, hopefully, to produce babies that would stay alive while remaining alive themselves. Unfortunately, the success rate on those objectives wasn't very high. The big shots determined that the solution was get 'em young and get 'em with child ASAP/STAT/TOUT SUITE.
And if the new bride died, just start over again with another 12 year old.
Not very romantic or considerate for the young girl or even health conscious.
I am now switching to the next major discussion topic - the virginity of Priscilla Beaulieu.
The information that follows in this topic is from Priscilla's autobiography.
Priscilla moved from Germany to the United States after her dad went to Graceland and met with Elvis to get his word of honor that young Priscilla would NOT live with Elvis and there would be no messin' until she graduated from high school. Upon her subsequent arrival at Graceland these promises were immediately broken. She and Elvis occupied the same bedroom and the only sexual activity that was NOT performed was intercourse even though she continually begged him to go ahead. They did finally include that activity on their wedding night. Thus she and Elvis would know the date of that event per her autobiography. That led to the arrival of Lisa Marie 9 months later. The result of that birth was the dimunition of their sex life as Elvis didn't think having intercourse with a mother was an activity in which he wanted to participate. That decision led to Lisa Marie's status as an only child and the divorce of her parents.

Watching a couple of your videos I have to say you are a very entertaining and engaging art/film critic. You might want to talk to a copyright lawyer just to get some training in how to deal more smoothly with these issues. Everything you do should fall under the protection of "Fair Use" (but I also got my law degree by writing on a toy sheep skin with a Sharpie).
I leaned about The Colonel after I briefly met Alanna Nash and she gave me a copy of her book "The Colonel" about you-know who,. So I was excited to see this character show up in the film. BTW, she says the movie made Colonel Parker out to be worse than he was, but what's a movie without a good villain, eh?
Oh, and Baz Luhrmann the director. He has a funny philosophy about movies. He wants you to remember that you are watching a movie, and that things you know or feel are part of the story. So he does a lot of Easter eggs and hidden references in his movies. In this movie the scene that had me cry-laughing was the shot of Las Vegas and the casino where the camera flies in at night over the model and the city lights look like flames and it rushes up to the top to show the name of the casino, and all the angles and the music cue they play are the same from when the camera flies over Mordor and up the black tower to Sauron's Evil Eye in Lord of the Rings! Generous! If you haven't already seen it Baz Luhrmann's Romeo & Juliette (1996) is fun to watch this way. It will make a great episode!

I enjoyed your overall reaction to Elvis India. My apologies in advance for the length of this post. Elvis was a very complicated person. And although I thought the movie was very good, it could have been epic, but because they left so much out regarding his life it failed to meet that criteria in my view. I'm glad you researched about his death, which the movie inexplicably excluded (possibly due to Priscilla's influence). I remember the day Elvis died. Elvis was engaged at the time of his death to Ginger Alden. He also had a serious relationship with Linda Thompson (a former Miss Tennessee pageant winner) for several years after Priscilla divorced him in the early 70's which was not covered. In fact, Elvis' daughter Lisa Marie, who was on the property the day Ginger Alden found Elvis dead, has admitted she was smoking cigarettes (at age 9 mind you) and actually called Linda Thompson first because she had become so close with her during Elvis' relationship with Thompson. Elvis likely died of a aneurysm while trying to push/expel the waste from his system while on the toilet. Just a terrible ending for his life. As far as the race thing goes I was glad, and I'm a white man from the South, that they didn't shy away from how racist the South was, and still is by the way, when showing what Elvis went through, particularly in his rise to superstardom.
In closing I would like to commend you on realizing just how "human" Elvis was. Yes, he was having sexual relations with a minor. Members of the Memphis Mafia have stated they thought he might be put in jail for what was going on with Priscilla at the time, and fearing the worst. And although he clearly was influenced by black culture and probably supported civil rights when he was young, he also supported Richard Nixon later in his life, and there is well documented proof of this. Nixon was extremely opposed to the Civil Rights Movement (Nixon's Southern Strategy), and Elvis also was a supporter of J. Edgar Hoover (FBI Director) who also did everything in his power to suppress the Civil Rights Movement and its leaders, so because I'm not necessarily a fanboy like so many when it comes to Elvis, to me the jury will always be "out" when it comes to Elvis' true feelings about race, particularly as he got older. I've known many people who have black friends, or even relatives, but they are still racist. The idea that you have black friends, or like "black" music and can't be racist is asinine. You can, and I've seen it many times in my life. Again to me the jury will always be "out" when it comes to this regarding Elvis. Like I said, he was incredibly complicated. He tried to get the Beatles deported, presumably because he considered them a threat to his reign as the king/s of rock and roll, but he also gave a lot of his fortune away to people less fortunate and was very generous with his money. Elvis was a walking dichotomy in many ways. And the movie didn't get into much of this. I personally wished it would have. I want to see a person warts and all, no sugar coating, and they did sugar coat significantly with this movie. I suppose time restraints can explain some of it since the movie was already almost 3 hours long, I just thought they missed so many opportunities with this film. Despite all of this though, I would still recommend it. It was very powerful at times, and Elvis is arguably one of the 3 or 4 most iconic human beings to ever walk the face of the planet. And if it makes his fanboys/girls who seemingly think he was perfect feel any better, I felt sorry for Elvis during parts of the film. I had seen several documentaries about him over the years so I knew most of the story, but I still felt bad for him in some profound ways. In other ways though, he was a very flawed man, which the film seemed to intentionally ignore. You were right for binging up the things you did India. Elvis was a force of nature, the ultimate rock star, generous, but also very flawed, and not some saint like figure that so many of his fans make him out to be.

Your post was awfully long. Priscilla has been maligned in books by the Memphis mafia. They were jealous of the hold she had on elvis. They lived in the house with elvis and Priscilla and that was ridiculous for married people. The girlfriends were not important to this story. One, the movie is from Parkers point of view, it's NOT A DOCUMDRAMA... or documentary. If you want that, you can find them. Second, Linda Thompson was a gold digger, a baby sitter, and was in it for her own fame. She later married Bruce Jenner, very famous Olympic winner and then David Foster who she wrote a song with. She was always looking for the next big thing. No one even remembers ginger, no reason to incude her. The movie is not a minute by minute look, it hits the high spots of his life and shows us the hold Parker had on elvis.

I really liked this movie when I saw it in the theater but this is definitely not a happy movie. I knew there was an issue with Col. Parker but this movie really showed just how crooked and manipulative he was with Elvis. As with too many artists, Elvis didn't have anyone really in his corner. His father was barely literate and married another woman very soon after his mother died and was easily led by Col. Parker and the money. However, regardless of Elvis' flaws his music was incredible. I can remember when he died. The utter devastation people felt. He truly was one in a million. It is sad that he didn't live longer.

A lot of the stuff was true but skipping major parts and twisting others makes it hard to get a true full picture of who Elvis was. For the most part he enjoyed his life but he had some major hard times too.
That scene of him screaming at the Colonel while on stage and on a live mic never happened. Elvis did fire the Colonel but he did not do it publicly. Elvis was too professional to ruin a live performance like that. The only time there was a ruckus on stage during a performance was when 3 drunks decided they were tough enough to kick Elvis' butt. Bodyguards snagged two of them and Elvis used his martial arts to take down the 3rd. Never try to kick the butt of an 8th degree black belt.
If you want real facts then watch his cousin's youtube that someone else posted a link to or read some of the books written by his entourage that were with him from the start.
I dated a guy back in the 82/83 who said he was one if Elvis' bodyguards. I thought he was full of it but then I saw him in Elvis' entourage during a documentary on tv about Elvis. He said Elvis really was a fantastic and generous person and the guy I dated couldn't stand Col. Parker. He blamed him for Elvis's death because he kept pushing him so hard to do so many performances and didn't care what Elvis took or was given as long as he could get up on that stage and keep the money coming in.

I long for the day when we white fans are recognized as loving those influences. What a shame Parker cut him off from real friends. The 1968 special was how I like to remember him. But they did go to Graceland to meet Priscilla and the family and had a BBQ. Much of the cast and crew were there. Graceland is still owned by Lisa Marie and she can stay there anytime she wants, it's her family home. They basically met Austin and were pleasantly surprised. I doubt Priscilla woukd have objected, but if it had been Harry styles she might have questioned hiring a famous singer to be elvis. It couldn't have worked.

Walk The Line is the Johnny Cash movie. What makes me love Cash and Presley is that both loved Jesus.... Elvis mom died at 46 of cirrhosis... Elvis weighed 350 pounds at his death with 100 pounds of undigested waste in him from the pills blocking his intestines.

I think you should react to a song called together by for king and country, kirk franklin, and tori Kelly., plus I know a bunch of good country/ Christian artists(, these include: Lauren Daigle, for king and country, Anne Wilson, maverick city(promises), and Jordan Feliz to name a few(and I think that the songs from some of these reveal a lot, + Pease watch the story of my Jesus by Anne Wlson, it is so good, but very say).

The guy who did the movie is an Aussie. He also butchered Romeo and Juliet and a number of different "cultural" icons.
The question is: did you enjoy it?
