I may have leaned into the memes a bit too much on this one ha. But yes awesome collab video! Some really great info about these ports :-) thanks for showing shmup slam love! ❤
A much bigger thanks to you for helping collab on it while also making shmup slam happen at the same time. It really added a lot to the content to have you there in a sub-genre (bullet hell) that I'm still personally learning myself. Slam is looking like a massive success and I was able to pop in a few times too. And you were still able to reach the goal you set live so it all worked out. Sounds like it's been a pretty damn sweet week to me!
Thanks man. Appreciate that feedback. I had a lot of fun with it. It’ll be hard to top one day. The collab with Mark really made it something either casual players like me or pros like him can enjoy I think. Stoked to hear you got to see it and liked it too.
16:12 Lol. Actually Palm says "RECO-CHAAAAANNNN!!!" when he got hit. I heard the point of Mushihimesama Futari's story is, as the subtitle says, a journey of two of them together. It's implied that their bond grew stronger as the stage progresses, so the voice clips change by Stage 3. If I recall Reco will say Palm's name when she got hit on Stage 3 and later.
Haha yeah one other person mentioned that too what he was saying. It totally sounds like Tinkle something to me I didn’t get the Reco-Chan at all. It makes sense. I did notice that btw he only yells it starting stage 3 and was wondering what that was about. But I also got a tip the voice can be turned off so now I know for next time I try to practice ultra 🤣. It can get annoying.
Slight correction at 55:35 - the actual condition to get an extend in DOJ WL loop 2 is to either no miss or no bomb the stage. You can spend as many bombs or lives as you want, as long as you don't use consume both in the same stage (or game over). Otherwise, this is an awesome video, love to see more collaborations like this in future!
Thanks for the heads up that’s good to know. I think when he said by not bombing or not dying he meant either or, but I can see how that could be misunderstood as both. I didn’t give it a second thought personally as I have zero chance of either from stage 3 onward haha. Maybe a better chance at getting through a stage not dying by using some bombs every time I got stuck , but pretty much stage 3 onward I’m not good enough to make that happen most times. 😅 My routes aren’t there from not playing enough.. I get into trouble too often. And that’s on loop 1! I can forget about loop 2 lol. Really glad you enjoyed it though I tried to make it fun for both audiences, more casual like myself and Mark’s insight for veteran players. I think even players far better than me, just enjoy seeing games they love represented.
Keep em coming guys. I'm really glad on how everything happening this weekend has gone. This collab, Shmup Slam 3, announcements and sales all over. Let's keep pushing shmups to grow as a niche. Loved the video btw, glad to see a bunch of players who I know here.
Shmup Slam looked like it went amazing and I even managed to pop in for 2-3 sessions including yours of course. I'm going to keep trying to bring in people from the community for videos, whether the collabs with Mark, other players with gameplay, or yourself for inside info and interviews like you just helped me with. The more different people can get involved the better for everyone.
@@ShmupJunkie I mostly act behind the scenes, STG Illuminati thing, wanting to help shmups grow (that includes GameDevs, Content Creators, Publishers, Communities and Casual Players alike). It's a lot of work but it's paying off! BTW thanks for popping up for my run man!
@@dr_ubo your run was awesome and I wasn’t going to miss it for anything. A master class that I’ll be watching for strategy as I play through it myself. First the hard way cause that’s how I like it 😆
That's wild, I can't believe some of these games are so hard players literally know the names of the only people to finish them...and can count them on one hand.
I believe it 😂. It’s likely there are others in Japan we don’t know about but we are still talking some very rare feats. It’s unfortunately a big part of why shmups may have become so niche. At some point they are so hard it becomes too exclusionary.
Thanks! Well it takes a casual to know a casual so that’s where I’m at haha. I tried to hit both angles in this one with my commentary and then the expert take. Even not being big into the competitive side of them I still enjoy their perspective. Especially on Cave games which are clearly geared toward the more hardcore crowd.
Shmup Junkie i couldn’t agree more! I also listened to your podcast episode. I do look up to anyone being able to 1cc or even get good Highscores on these brutal games, but not everyone of us is a superplayer.
@@jenslorbeer5307 for a long time and still now most of the shmup community groups are elite players so it puts off a lot of folks like us that just play to enjoy them. We lurk but don’t engage as we don’t have much to contribute to those discussions. There’s a place for both. The competitive scene drives a lot too like in fighting games. So I’m doing my part in trying to create a community for beginners and non competitive players like myself to just talk about them and share in the nostalgia. There’s a lot of us. And if the genre is ever to make a comeback it’ll have to appeal to everyone. Or I could be delirious a bit too much of the pipe myself after all that bullet hell lol
Most that review it just play the arrange mode which is more casual for most of us. So they don’t get into how insane the original arcade mode actually is. It’s crazy that only 3 people we know of even beat the x360 port lol. That’s a different level of hard lol
That stage 5 music is godly it belongs on permanent loop on shmup tracks I listen to haha. It's so good. I hadn't played it in a while before this week and it reminded me how much I enjoy it.
Yeah I hear you on that. And I have no idea how many work on the latest gen Xbox either. Guess they don't care enough to make it so. I'm glad I have my modded 360 to play all my imports that way.
Very late to the party on this and maybe already pointed out, but you can turn off the voices (by turning the voice volume down to 0 in the menu) in the Saidaioujou Xbox mode. It's an absolute must in my opinion!
Collaboration is the next lvl. You guys could make a bi weekly video of just playing a selected set / single game or even playing vs for score as friends. Or just more of these type of videos would be great.
We definitely plan on more collabs together and I’m sure will come up with all kinds of stuff to do. He will be doing some on his channel too. Mark would destroy me in any score attack unless it’s a caravan mode most likely 😅 he’s a beast. I’m a filthy casual having too much fun 😂 But maybe that would actually be funny to watch. A seasoned pro vs someone flying by the seat of their pants.
Yep, and it's the reason I got one RGH modded a while back so I can play any region and not worry about it. The hardware is is unreliable so I fear the day it dies, but they aren't so hard to get. I think I am on my fourth one. 😂
CAVE games are also my main reason to buy Xbox 360. And within my country Xbox 360 is considered garbage. Playstation fanboyism is one thing, but there is more to that. One, the game roster sucks for weeb players by 2011 onwards, and two, different voltage. My X360’s power brick exploded to smokes :(
Oh man this is crazy! He i am thinking I had mad skills playing shootermups back in the day with the Turbo GrafX16, Genesis and S.Nintendo lol that seems like kindergarten compared to the super elite skills needed to play this game! Props to the player!
@@miguelroman4294 Yeah Cave was known for making some insane games for elite level players. And they’re awesome. But it may also be part of what pushed most everyone else out of being able to play them. I really like the arrange and training modes some of these console ports have.
I am not interested in playing any of these ports but the video was more hilarious than usual. The hour flew bay. Good job adapting your humor to fit the video Mark. You guys make a good team.
When we can get someone who has no interest in the games to watch an entire hour of said games we must be doing something right 😂. Glad you enjoyed it as much as I did putting it together with Mark’s help.
@@ShmupJunkie I love me some shmups. Just not on the Xbox. But all your content is entertaining. First time I saw you hit the "shmup crack pipe" I laughed my ass off.
@@ShmupJunkie by the way I'm playing through Soldier Blade right now on your recommendation. Can't believe this game looks this good on a hu card. It looks like a cd game.
@@riggel8804 😅 an apt metaphor I stole from my road racing days. We used to call it the go fast crack pipe... the rush you get from it. It applies to shmups quite well.
@@riggel8804 And the music is so damn good it may as well be. You can’t go wrong with that game it’s just cool all around. Even the difficulty isn’t too crazy and most can enjoy it. The stage 4 music especially may be my fav shmup ost ever its so good 💦 lol
Fantastic episode man! In my humble opinion, the fact that you started collaborating with players great at the games you are reviewing is a big jump in quality for this kind of vid. Just keep them coming, you are killing it!
Thanks man. I’ve always wanted to start doing that but just didn’t have the connections. The more I can get other great players involved the better. At least with the older 8/16bit stuff I know them so well and can give some unique insight. But with bullet hell especially I didn’t want to do this without others like Mark who know it so much better. It was a perfect episode to do together. And I’ll always be looking for more when I know others that can really give insight into certain games. Like Ikaruga perhaps 😁
It's interesting, I started my channel around covid time in late 2019 early 2020, partly from being home so much more often. And I've had a lot of comments mention since that my videos have been helpful for them during various lockdowns. They've been helpful in keeping me focused on things I enjoy as well.
Wow!! I am still in shock after watching this brutal bullet hell and gaming perfomances!! Had to watch the video in two parts, my eyes were drying of seeing the action 😂!! I guess Futari in the easiest mode is my only option to play one of this impossible shmups (at least for me LOL). Great quality video and it’s impressive the time and effort you put on these videos! Congrats on the collabs as well! 👍🏻👍🏻
Thank you so much dude. Love that you enjoyed it and your great support. Imagine my eyes playing them all week haha. Butt paste doesn’t help with that but Visine eye drops do 😅
Legit had no idea the 360 was such a shooter machine until you brought it to my attention. Curious to try some out. Great video man, lots of new stuff for me to see here. Collab away!
They released all of 5 shmups in the US shows how much they cared lol. It was mainly a Japan thing but yeah. Lots of good ones there. And many are region free!
A lil' late yet still: I love your passion and energy when it comes to talking about shmups! It's a wonderful thing to see and makes me want to play them with you! Happy almost 2 year anniversary! 😊
Awesome video and cool collab! Such deep introspect went into each game in this video. Of course CAVE dominated this list with it's ever so annoying pink and purple bullet cascades looking like a bloodstream of red blood cells. One thing that absolutely blew my mind, was when you TahTayed your huge wall mounted HDTV. Honestly didn't know there were home studio setups like that.
Thanks man. This video was a lot of work but a ton of fun. It did well and I was stoked how it came out. When it comes to the hardest games Cave was going to dominate. Btw it’s very easy to setup Tate on your home TV. There are mounts under $50 to do it, that’s all it is. If you can install a TV mount you can do do it yourself. I had a link in one of my videos to it although I’m drawing a blank which one.
I can’t help myself with the mocking anime girl bits. It never gets old to me 😂. Really glad you enjoyed it. I try to throw in humor to balance out the crazy.
I've actually managed to 1CC Original mode on Futari. After it was over I felt like I was on cloud 9, it's an amazing feeling when you 1CC a challenging game like that!
That’s awesome! I’m not sure if I ever did actually. I know I can get to the final boss but don’t think I managed a clear on that wench. But the music on that last stage alone is 🔥
I felt the same way with SDOJ where novice mode felt too easy and the regular arcade mode felt too punishing. For me the solution was to pick the expert mode shot within the novice mode version of the game, it feels like a pretty good middle point and expert mode also has a slightly smaller hitbox so it's a good deal smoother to play. SDOJ's unusually large hitbox for a CAVE shooter is a big part of where its difficulty comes from
Thanks! I’m just enjoying what I’m doing and maybe someday I’ll expand a bit, but this genre needs more love and there are still a lot I’d love to do for it. The channel has been growing fast so I can’t complain. It’s only been several months!
Greate list. I really like all of your "top hardest shmups" videos. They are all well made with good knowledge of the subject. That is why I would like to ask: did you thought about making similar list about hardest bosses/TLB in shmups? (or the most infamous for their difficulty) I already know about few like: Inbachi, DOOM, Zatsuza. There are a lot hardest bosses lists for other games/genres but it`s hard to find something like that for shmups
I did think about it yes. If I ever did it, I would need to involve a lot of players much better at the games than me. Because I'm certainly not good enough to reach those bosses and beat them lol. Or most of them anyway. It would be a fun collaboration with super players though if I ever do.
Most of us are amateurs when it comes to these games including me. But I’m happy to still enjoy them as an amateur 😁. That’s why I like the ports with all the great features and modes.
2:04 er, correction? Saidaioujou may be CAVE's last major console / arcade game, certainly, but they're far from quitting making games. They're still active making mobile games, in particular gacha games with their iconic bullet hell.
Just since I made the video I’ve had a couple people mention they had some older Cave games on their mobile phone. I had no idea they even existed. A cave bullet hell on mobile seems so out there never even registered, but now I’m actually looking to check them out. I wonder if anyone from the original Cave team is still involved in the mobile games.
@@ShmupJunkie Yes, they do, and surprisingly in their latest game, World Witches United Front, a licensed game, has Tsuneki Ikeda in their credits list. The game itself is very forgiving compared to CAVE’s old outings and their long standing Mahou Otome, but boy, I’ve never seen a loot box game with such an extreme emphasis on score-milking. Long story short while your shield is on it’s best to absorb lasers to rack up big points.
@@BalsticMaker12 It makes sense the games are much easier given it’s a mobile market, but I’m certainly intrigued. Almost makes you wonder if shmups made enough of a comeback that the possibility of another full blown release could happen. Even if on modern console not arcade. I can see a million seller worldwide people would lose their sh$t if that kind of news came out.
Yeah the good ports definitely do and great training options. Except for the ball busters like Ketsui and DOJ. But the arrange modes on Futari and SDOJ are both solid. Still fun but easier for most to to enjoy.
wow great job! insane video, so much time and effort must have gone into this... some all time heavy hitters in this list. "Dont drink and shmup" - advice I should listen to more often lol xD
Thanks! Yeah it was lots of work but good fun too. I don’t know how many will see the entire thing being an hour, but I didn’t want to cut any of the good content. These top 5 vids always run long so with the extra commentary and footage it racked up. But I’m stoked with how it came out. I go relax now with some shmup slam and watch other people play 😅
Awesome video thoroughly enjoyed watching this !... Great choice of games without a doubt and the collaboration was a perfect addition... Im off to play some Futari
Thanks man. I enjoyed making it too. I’m off to hunt the original Mushihimesama before it gets even more expensive. Playing Futari again this week gave me a hankering for the original.
Too bad they only released a total of 5 of them in the US. All the good stuff and Cave games remained Japan only. At least at the time you had to own an import Xbox.
True (and fair point) - and was why mine's an import which I later modded to load from HDD. The PC, PS4 and Switch are much easier these days -- but the 360 still does get a lot of play (and it's easier to wire into a cab).
You were right, this does make me want to set up my 360 and play Mushi Futari! The only thing stopping me is that I've just picked up Crimson Clover for the Switch and I'm not sure my sanity could cope with even more bullet hell right now!
Now that my week of crazy playing these games is done maybe I can finally play some crimson clover as well. If I don’t mind watching my backlog continue to grow while I do 🤦♂️. At least Futari will be there waiting eventually.
Pink Sweets killed the mood more than any of the others. The regular mode was just nuts. It’s the only of the 5 games I can’t even get through. If ever a game deserved the term ball buster that one is it.
Thanks! Hope you enjoy it. It's a whole lot of bullet hell for a solid hour lol, almost an overload. But the content was so good I didn't want to cut anything.
Ha, the "tinkled*ck" thing reminds me of about 20 years ago when I was working at FuncoLand, and we used to put Bust A Move 2 in the PS1 display to listen to Bub. It always sounded to us like he was yelling "tampon" and "f*ck off!" Always a good laugh.
😂 Thanks a lot that's what I'm going to listen for now next I play Bust a Move again. That sounds like a good 2-player coop with the wife. Would be even funnier if you yelled that with a friend while playing it any time you'd get screwed by the other.
Mushihimesama Futari (I hope I spelled that right) is definitely one of the better shmups on Xbox 360. I showed this to my friend sitting next to me while I played and he was pretty impressed I managed to get to stage 4 on normal. He is not a shmup player and I’m an average one. I’m not a god at shmups but I still really enjoy them. The only bullet hell I’ve actually beaten on normal is Dodonpachi resurrection on my phone
Yeah Futari is actually very reasonable on normal up until Stage 3 where it really ramps up. I'm sure you've used the training mode before just to play stage 5 and have some fun with it. The whole level and music is simply brilliant. I've yet to play any of the Cave mobile games but I heard some are actually pretty fun for when you are out and about.
@@ShmupJunkie I think touch controls work fairly well on phones. You just touch and slide across the screen. The only thing I hate is that sometimes it can be hard to press the correct button in heated moments
Almost an hour? Damn. Never thought the 360 had any Shmups. I thought it was mostly FPS games and stuff. Also I bought that core grapes if you remember, played it beat blazing lasers I thought that was amazing, I never beat a shooter before so that was a first. I also beat r type, that one was a lot harder and I used save states a lot more but it was still good, not sure which one to pick from there, but I’m excited to play another one. Thanks for introducing me to this legendary genre and keep up these vids!
Sorry about that it just kind of ended up super long 😅. In the US the X360 was no good for shmups it had a total of 5. But in Japan as you see it was quite good. They just never came out here. If you finished blazing and RType on the mini I’d go for either Gradius 2 or Soldier Blade next. Both are great you can’t go wrong with either. And neither are as brutal as RType although Gradius 2 does get quite hard toward the end. The save states will help a lot.
Great video as always! Couple of small things to point out, DOJ and Ketsui ports are not region free, so you would need to japan console or hacked one to play those. On the DOJ stage select, depending on what button you press to start the game, you either start as powered up or without any power ups (you still cannot define hypers, rank etc. so it doesn't help a lot and good players say it's still useless training mode). EDIT: ialso the number of credits you get increases the more you play
I was totally going to mention which games here were region free vs not in the video and dropped the ball. It was a useful note. I always seem to miss one thing I’d planned to do. 😅 But it’s a great point as many are region free but not all. That tip on selecting a more powered up weapon for a training mode would have been really useful a week ago 😂
And just like, always amazing, super fantastic show, I loved it so much!!!! I haven't seen how long the show was until like the fifteenth twenty minute mark, I was like, what the hell? And then I paused and look at the time, and I was so surprised!! 😍 As always, keep up the amazing great work, mark did an amazing job as well gratulations on a super epic show 💯
Thanks dude! Yeah this one ran really long 😅 not on purpose. Just so much content and I couldn’t bare to cut anything. So figured people would watch as much as they want. This episode was nuts and I think I’ll try to bring in guest gameplay more often. It’s good for everyone.
Yeah, you understand a lot of people prefer short shows, but to me, personally, I wish all your shows could be this long!!! And again, you did an amazing job, and Mark in the commentary is fantastic as well 👏👏👏
That’s good to know! I wonder if it was always that way or if they added it when they did that other fix for allowing the training modes from the start.
38:13 Goodness, Pink Sweets looks more like the 90s shooters on Famicom, PC Engine and Super Famicom, on STEROIDS. By the time of Pink Sweets's release, the art of bullet clearing as the normal moveset must had been totally lost. This kind of design is easily found in Compile titles, but not 00s CAVE titles! Oh, Yagawa...
The shield charge mechanic from Recca was the most obvious to me. The old school 90s shooters are what I’m most familiar with so I recognized it right away. Pink Sweets was pretty impossible on normal mode. I’m glad I got Pearl to come in with some killer gameplay at the end.
I'm sure someone else has called this out, the 360 port of Daioujou was patched a few years later that fixed 99% of the problems and the whole package in my opinion is superior to the PS2 version. Of course thats if you're not good enough to master the white label version, which I'm no where near able to lol. The X mode is fantastically fun to play!
Yea they did actually. I didn’t know about a patch until some people mentioned it as my 360 is modded so no going online for me 😅. I’m sure I can load a patched version direct or think so. But even with the patch, does it then have all the cool practice features that are on the PS2 port?
Bullet hell was always my weakness too compared to older shmups. I only found myself slowly improving as I play them more and more, but I'm nowhere near the level of the shmup gods playing in shmup slam this weekend. It's one reason I made it a point in the video though to talk about the cool Arrange and training modes in the games that had it, that make them accessible to anyone. I don't like the slower moving bullet hell which turned me off initially, but once I found certain games I liked most that played fast, like Ketsui and the later stages of Futari I got into them more. My goal is to get better at them so it's a work in progress.
Just checked my shorts and YUP! They’re FULL!!! Damn guys!!! I seriously broke out into a sweat watching some of that game play. I’m not even worthy to watch those replays. 🤘
Lol dude if you thought this was crazy you should see some of the stuff on shmup slam 3 today. I just saw something that made me have to grab a new pair of underwear too 😂
Yeah man. Same story on the PS2 in that area though. There were like 8 shooters total released in the west, despite the PS2's enormous appeal globally.
Also: while I have your ear ;-) Any plans for an "Every 360 shmup" video? Your others in that series were excellent and unearthed some treasures that even MY old ass didn't know about 😂
Some are region free and some are not. There is a list of them if you want to Google it. Mushi Futari and Pink Sweets are for sure. But not all versions of Ketsui or SDOJ are. All of these games are NOT backwards compatible on the newest Xbox. Unfortunately 😢
@@ShmupJunkie Thanks for the quick reply! I recently got a Xbox Series X and wanted to know if any of the Japanese Shmups from 360 worked on it. COULDNT find any info at all! Now I know. Sadly 😞 Not what I wanted emotional hear.

@@ShmupJunkie yeah i had to download it from 360 store. Not sure if its still available as the Dodonpachi reserection Black Label DLC appears to have been removed a while ago although it still comes up with option to buy.

What I like about Futari is the variety it has, it has something for every skill level. Best example is BL Original, while it is very easy for Survival and very beginner friendly, it can be really tough if you want to score it. Why make it so complex with Xenia and cheat engine, when you can just disable the counterstop? Easy What Reco and Palm says when they die, is the name of the other character Reco: "Palm!" Palm: "Reco-chan!" And yes, you can turn off the voice My experience with PS was, I had no idea what am I supposed to do and whats going on, but I like the mechanic and has good music. Havent played Catsui that much, but I like the aggressive play style and the overall aesthetic(Same as in SDOJ with the strong colours) of it. (And yes, get the PS4 port for it)
Where can I turn off the voice! Damn that would’ve been handy 😂. Now I know at least. I love Futari though it’s my fav for sure. Does the Xbox360 port have a way to disable the counter stop? I didn’t even know that existed since I’d never score that high myself and learned it when Mark talked about it. He plays the arcade versions so I’m guessing that Xenia cheat would be the only way on it.
@@ShmupJunkie You can turn it off in the Sound Options of the game. First, doubt most people will ever do a counterstop of 1.5 Ultra. Most are happy when they can even get through that hell. And what Mark said, the only way to see the actual score is to export the Replay from your Xbox over to an usb and then import it on Xenia etc. You still need a rgh Xbox for that tho, you cant do that on a regular one. About the counterstopless Futari, which still is being tested, is a moded file you replace with another one in the game that removes the counterstop and you dont have to do that long process anymore.
Or an awesome Cave collection rerelease compilation done right. At this point not many devs aside from m2 that could do the performance and extra features justice.
Epic video dude! For a big Cave fan like me, this episode of brutal shooters is a blast. Great picks of course, but what do you guys think about Espgaluda II? It took me 8 months for a 1CC...But hey, I'm not an elite shmups player at all thou! Would like to see more Cave's goodies!
Thanks buddy I knew you would enjoy this one. I'm not an elite shmup player for sure, but I enjoyed making my parts for those like myself and Mark did a great job elaborating on some more technical aspects. I like Espgaluda II it's a lot of fun, and another really well made port from what I can tell similar to how Mushihimesama Futari is. I haven't 1cc'd any of these games really so I can't talk, I need a continue or two usually to get through them as I don't have enough practice. It definitely doesn't feel as hard as these games do, but it certainly isn't easy. Kind of like Deathsmiles wonderful game but not as brutal as some of these. It's also why I think so many people like it along with the aesthetics... it's more accessible.
I never played Ketsui on PS3, but the PS4 port is amazing. It’s perfect and much better than on Xbox also. If you already have it I don’t know if it’s worth buying again, but if you want the best version then Ketsui Deathtiny on ps4 is an amazing port.
Vale muchísimo la pena. Tiene más modos y los gadgets de M2 le suman mucho a la jugabilidad. Recomendado en verdad, ya pronto tendrá un release Americano, aunque es fácil comprar en JP si quieres.
I still have an old copy of Ikaruga I downloaded on xbox live way back. Great port it's how I used to play it most often. Happy hunting. Not sure if you ever play on PC, but some of the most smokin deals, including for Cave games are most often on Steam.
I really need to invest money on a graphics card and fix my PC! Steam is pretty awesome and miss some of my old counter strike buddies and day of defeat clan guys!
@@digitalworms Really powerful cards just a couple gen back are a great buy. 2-300 bucks for a 1080ti or similar will get you all the 1080p horsepower you’d ever need.
It took me a while too but I eventually found a handful I liked with fun design and good music. Like Futari. Maybe part of when we grew up too. I’ll always prefer older shooters too but I’m trying to expand my horizons a bit.
Thanks! I honestly wish they were but far as I know they aren’t. Or not yet. They weren’t on any of the lists. There were a couple of them a friend verified did not work. Not surprising there is only one kind of “shooter” most Xbox owners really care about. Bummer as the Xbox360 is so unreliable and dies every few years. Would be nice if another console could play all it’s old games.
Merry Christmas Man! I agree RAIDEN FIGHTERS Pack is the one! I have all these on a Modded 360 Stacked Aurora RGH. Just the Best Mod in my Collection using a Mortal Kombat Arcade Stick- Suzzo Happ setup...
And it is for this reason, that even though I am an old retro gamer at heart...I love my XBox 360 more than most of my collection. Pink Sweets is absolutely my favorite. I love the charge shot mechanic and how you can switch between fire types to absorb shots. And that first stage OST...god I wish the included soundtrack had that song on it. Edit: Wait...people don't like Pink Sweets because it's hard? (Just got to that part)
I don’t think people don’t like it Pink Sweets is well liked. But unless you’re playing the arrange mode the arcade original is insane, probably Yagawa’s hardest game ever and that’s saying something haha. The rank system is the most brutal of all. I learned a lot about the game making the video especially the port, Pearl’s gameplay was nuts. I like the unique mechanics of the game too it reminds me of his earliest Recca. But I’ve yet to be good at anything but the arrange mode on the port.
@@luckyrockmore2796 The 360 is a massive pain to hack and there’s no region switch. So buying a Japanese 360 is pretty much the easiest way. That or using a newer console like Switch or Steam, as many of these games have been releasing again. Emulation is still hit and miss as well. So yes, it’s a combo of what’s been rereleased and owning an import 360 that’s been the easiest so far. Many of these are region free but some are not.
@@ShmupJunkie I'm a physical media guy so I may just have to look into a Japanese 360 then. I recently hooked up my Switch to my arcade cabinet for beatemups and the few shooters available...I'll have to look into their digital offerings too. Thanks for info and keep up the incredible content! 👍👍
@@luckyrockmore2796 As a side note you’ll find modded 360 units fairly cheap on eBay too as an alternative to an import 360. Just riskier in the sense of getting one done well.
Man an igs pgm. I don’t hear that mentioned often. I know it but never actually seen or played one in person. I just know it’s similar to the MVS setup or so I thought. Ketsui really is fun I prefer it to all the DDP games personally. It fits more my play style anyway. It’s so good.
@@ShmupJunkie you know that those cave games were made on pcbs that are based on the igs pgm. On ebay you can find converted pgm carts rewritten with ketsui/ddp ext. If you have the desire to play them on original hardware it is identical (also zero lag) and you have a supergun I'll send you a spare igs pgm motherboard. Also the neo Geo cd pad is plug and play with a supergun and believe me it's a perfect pad to play cave.
@@fictionsgamepad3497 That’s really good info thanks for that. Sounds like my MVS which I use with a supergun hooked to my crt. Playing those games like the original pcb is very tempting especially Ketsui!
@@fictionsgamepad3497 dude you know I’d totally set it up and load Ketsui on there among others. I’d be grateful and insist on at least covering shipping. Maybe it’s something I could even cover in a video as I’ll bet many don’t know about it.
@@ShmupJunkie I streamed it once. I don't think I grasped the mechanics much as it was my first time playing. These are games I think one has to play for oh say.. a billion hours 😜
@@mikematei Pretty much exactly how Cave intended it. Anyone truly amazing at any of their games has dedicated years to them. I don’t often play for score so I’m happy once I’m just good enough to play it with competence. So it’s fun and not just kicking my butt. Just that takes long enough haha.
Mushi! I love that game, one of only region free X360 games worth importing for me (I think Espgaluda II is reg free also, just never got around to paying 100 plus for copy). Didn't know Ketsui was on the X either, years ago I got the PS4 Deathtiny one. Also emulated a cool lil DS version of it too haha! You sure know your SHMUPs, I just wish I had balls to play some of these games on any setting beyond 1 or practice/easy :-/
I got an ecksbawks 360 just for the cave games and literally nothing else. I love em to bits but I have a serious problem where I play on keyboard WAY better than a pad, and Im too brokeass to afford a good stick.
I'm one who plays on a pad better than a stick and for sure a keyboard. But you're not alone. I know other players that kill on a keyboard it's just their way.
To be brutalized by these crazy hard games? haha kidding. Yes, owning an X360 is great way to play many Cave games. I take good care of my modified 360 system so I can play japanese games on it too.
@@ShmupJunkie and im a fans of bullet hell games and especially Cave games. not only that. some of other SHMUP like Raiden IV, Escathos, Ginga Force, Radiant Silvergun, Ikaruga, also there. it's like Xbox360 is saturn version of gen 7. where XB360 is the house of Shmup stuff in gen VII console imo.
I think my eyes started bleeding 15 minutes into this. The only good my thumbs would be for these games would be for sucking because the ball slings these would put me in would make me as impotent as a newborn.
😂 thanks for the laugh. You make a good indirect point though. Overdoing it on competitive gaming has actually injured people before and you could end up compromised for life. Like getting carpal tunnel or anything else. So when things start cramping it’s time for a break.
Ketsui DX is coming to switch dude I can't wait to own this I'd have to say my favorite cave shooter is Espgaluda 2 Donpachi coming in 2nd and Dangun Feveron 3rd
I think the reason I haven't tried black label yet is my X360 is modded, so I can't go online to download with it. So my ver of Futari was never updated. Maybe the rom patch is available some other way I can find. It sounds like it would be a good middle ground. Arrange is fun but pretty darn easy you are super powerful. So black label does sound worth trying if I can get it somehow.
I have Dai fukkatsu for the switch i freaking love that game and i absolutely love that on one of the versions you can use the ship from Ketsui hopefully they port saidaioujou to the switch one day

Watch Shmup Slam 3 Live this weekend at
ua-cam.com/video/HyR4MHfrYv8/v-deo.html
I may have leaned into the memes a bit too much on this one ha. But yes awesome collab video! Some really great info about these ports :-) thanks for showing shmup slam love! ❤
A much bigger thanks to you for helping collab on it while also making shmup slam happen at the same time. It really added a lot to the content to have you there in a sub-genre (bullet hell) that I'm still personally learning myself. Slam is looking like a massive success and I was able to pop in a few times too. And you were still able to reach the goal you set live so it all worked out. Sounds like it's been a pretty damn sweet week to me!
The memes were fantastic. Love the commentary from both of you!
Need more of this memeage on the EU channel
Awesome video. This is one I will probably watch more than once.
Thanks man. Appreciate that feedback. I had a lot of fun with it. It’ll be hard to top one day. The collab with Mark really made it something either casual players like me or pros like him can enjoy I think. Stoked to hear you got to see it and liked it too.
This is shmups expert at top level. A video to be saved and be seen again.
Experts much better than me I was lucky to have them contribute to the video. We will do it again one day.
56:33 "Hopefully some day M2 will come around to creating a proper black label port"
Well they sure did! Thanks Mark(?)
The last line he says about SDOJ becomes scarier when you realize this: nobody has ever beaten it.
I love your enthusiasm for the genre and the more „casual“ approach. It’s all about the fun and enjoyment in my opinion, keep up the good work!
Excellent video as always man! Man I’ll tell you I am familiar with most of what you showed today however I didn’t know “Pink Sweets” was so brutal!
Most that review it just play the arrange mode which is more casual for most of us. So they don’t get into how insane the original arcade mode actually is. It’s crazy that only 3 people we know of even beat the x360 port lol. That’s a different level of hard lol
@@ShmupJunkie that’s “insane” like Crazy Eddie’s prices 😂.
Brilliant to see love for Futari 1.5 - absolutely incredible, and you use my favourite music track for the vid too! Awesome work :)
That stage 5 music is godly it belongs on permanent loop on shmup tracks I listen to haha. It's so good. I hadn't played it in a while before this week and it reminded me how much I enjoy it.
A whole hour of shmup goodness? You're spoiling us!!!
You make a good point how am I supposed to top this now? 😂
Such a good video!! I love you and electric underground. Also, amazing music throughout the video.
Thanks! An oldie but o had a great time making it. Always enjoy working with Mark too. He helped get me started and remains a friend.
The fact that Guwange is the only Cave game backwards compatible on XB1 is a travesty
Yeah, anime voice acting is fucking unbearable to me.
The Cave shmups were the reason I bought a 360 a few years ago. Only a handful made it to Europe, but it was worth it.
My X360’s power brick exploded to smokes :(
@@BalsticMaker12 the whole console is unreliable. I’m on my fourth Xbox360 now. They fail pretty often unfortunately.
Because Dragons... You got me right there LOL!
😂 it’s so true though. I’m such a sucker for that. I still play d&d on the weekends with my boy what a geek I am 😅
Like Ikaruga perhaps 😁
ahah when the time comes, count me in 👍
My favorite content creator during covid right now
It's interesting, I started my channel around covid time in late 2019 early 2020, partly from being home so much more often.
Ahah hilarious moments, excellent episode!
Thanks! This one was really fun to make and glad Mark was able to join and help out with each game too.
That was great! I'm still seeing bullet patterns 😂 Huge respect to the hardcore sadists conquering these beasts!
You and me both. I was seeing them every time I closed my eyes after playing so much this week lol. Dreamed them too. Can’t complain on that front.
Great video. Love your style and humor. LMAO in parts.
But the music on that last stage alone is 🔥
your vids keep getting better dude, right on!
Thanks man I’m slowly trying to improve little things here and there. They seem to be getting longer too 😅 but not on purpose
SDOJ's unusually large hitbox for a CAVE shooter is a big part of where its difficulty comes from
Thanks for your channel! So specialized and "niche" yet so polished and passionate.
Keep it up! You definitely deserve way more views.
Thanks! I’m just enjoying what I’m doing and maybe someday I’ll expand a bit, but this genre needs more love and there are still a lot I’d love to do for it. The channel has been growing fast so I can’t complain. It’s only been several months!
I like how Mark shortens it to SDOJ when Saidaioujou is just as fast to pronounce :) SDOJ just makes me think of standard definition orange juice.
Will I get in trouble if I just start pronouncing it S-Dodge? 🤔
This is great, I support this collab!
Thanks! I’m looking forward to more together as well. We will come up with some fun stuff.
Greate list. I really like all of your "top hardest shmups" videos.
They are all well made with good knowledge of the subject.
That is why I would like to ask: did you thought about making similar list about hardest bosses/TLB in shmups? (or the most infamous for their difficulty)
I already know about few like: Inbachi, DOOM, Zatsuza.
@@ShmupJunkie Hope it will happen someday. That would be epic :) . Thanks for the replay
Insane video my friend. These games make me feel like such an amateur!!
TATE THAT BITCH!!!
Most of us are amateurs when it comes to these games including me. But I’m happy to still enjoy them as an amateur 😁. That’s why I like the ports with all the great features and modes.
@@LordShmup that right there is how I know you watched it to the end lol 🤟.
@@ShmupJunkie SDOJ Exa Label is a thing.
What I really like with the Xbox 360 shmups is that most have a novice mode so even I can feel awesome for 20 minutes...

I still love my 360 for shooters. It still kicks ass all these years later.
@@ShmupJunkie I'm still figuring it all out, but my first impressions are very good!
What did you ended up doing??
Heck, even seems like Pink Sweets killed the mood for the memes, haha
Pink Sweets killed the mood more than any of the others. The regular mode was just nuts. It’s the only of the 5 games I can’t even get through. If ever a game deserved the term ball buster that one is it.
Absolutely killing that characters voice 😂
Finally. Great vid.
56:25 or what?
Presented by cave my bro 😁🎮🔥
Hey dude what’s up 🤟 Cave knows how to make the grown men cry 😭 😂
@@ShmupJunkie alright will do! PS I noticed auto correct made it core grapes lol
@@Mingodough yeah I saw that luckily I am plenty fluent in auto correct
And again, you did an amazing job, and Mark in the commentary is fantastic as well 👏👏👏
In the 360 ddp daiouiou stage select. If you highligt start and press the start button you will play the selected stage with full power.
Wait, there's a rom of the patched DOJ for x360 to run on Xenia?
Awesome video as always. I'm just plain bad at bullet hell despite my nickname lol. Too hard for me.
I just saw something that made me have to grab a new pair of underwear too 😂
Another great video my man.
It amazes me how many exclusive JP releases the 360 got considering how poorly the system sold in Japan.
And how none of those games ever made it to the US. We literally got 5 shooters of that entire library. Pretty sad.
Yeah man. Same story on the PS2 in that area though. There were like 8 shooters total released in the west, despite the PS2's enormous appeal globally.
Also: while I have your ear ;-)
Any plans for an "Every 360 shmup" video? Your others in that series were excellent and unearthed some treasures that even MY old ass didn't know about 😂
@@CPS2 Oh yeah eventually once I work my way up to it. Assuming people don’t get tired of them by then. After I get through Saturn and PSX first.
Don't forget the Atari Jaguar as well 😉
All of these games you guys showed off, are they region free? Also, if they are and I did manage to acquire them, would they work on a Series X?
Some are region free and some are not. There is a list of them if you want to Google it. Mushi Futari and Pink Sweets are for sure. But not all versions of Ketsui or SDOJ are. All of these games are NOT backwards compatible on the newest Xbox. Unfortunately 😢

What I like about Futari is the variety it has, it has something for every skill level.
Best example is BL Original, while it is very easy for Survival and very beginner friendly, it can be really tough if you want to score it.
Why make it so complex with Xenia and cheat engine, when you can just disable the counterstop? Easy
What Reco and Palm says when they die, is the name of the other character
Reco: "Palm!"
Palm: "Reco-chan!"
And yes, you can turn off the voice
My experience with PS was, I had no idea what am I supposed to do and whats going on, but I like the mechanic and has good music.

Thanks for the video!

Other than having a Japanese 360 and getting these titles off Ebay, is there any other way to get these games? ie setting an NTSC 360 region to Japan?
@@luckyrockmore2796 The 360 is a massive pain to hack and there’s no region switch. So buying a Japanese 360 is pretty much the easiest way.
