I'm very much enjoying this trip and thanks for all your work.
We've recently come back from Florida, Heathrow to Orlando and back, flying with Virgin. Overall very good. We flew Premium Economy, booking well before we flew, and it was well worth it. I've never really enjoyed the in-flight meals on any fight but the return flight meal was very good. Cabin crew were excellent. Overall a very good experience.
Lee, the best upgrade I ever got was on BA while I was transferring in London from Berlin to JFK in 2019. I booked a return business class ticket for $1280 NYC to Berlin change planes at Heathrow. They offered me first class for £500 So I ended up being just about $1900 for my trip with one leg of first class on a 747-400!!

Last week we stayed at the Hilton terminal 2 and 3. What a great room we had . On the 13th floor with runway views. It was fantastic! We were able to walk to terminal 3 going through terminal 2. No taxis it was all underground. Fantastic. That room was an upgrade? The carpet is very industrial. Safe travels in San Francisco.

I spent a year in San Francisco in my early twenties and visited this past Summer, I was mortified how much it had changed and for the worst! There were so many homeless people and we just didn’t feel safe at night, such a shame as that City used to be the absolutely beautiful, our friends who live in Palm Alto said they never go into the City any more 😢 great report as always, I can give or take Virgin, since Delta got their grubby hands on them they have never been the same.
You're right, something is SERIOUSLY WRONG! VA should have allowed you to purchase the upgrade to premium economy, but tried to force you to pay the outrageous upgrade to first. That's not good business, especially since you can see up to the premium economy seats and see they're open!

the best asian food in north america is in vancouver (richmond) followed by toronto (markham). toronto is the most ethnically diverse city in the world. you can still find your fish and chips and meat pies from coast to coast in canada as well. victoria b.c. was/is known as more british than britain, there are even two castles built by scottish immigrants - one is used in a lot of movies like the x-men.

Coming from a massive avgeek and pilot in command, I only have one favourite. The Boeing 757-200 with the RB211s can never be beaten. Personal to fly favourite is the C172 or our PA28
I took this flight in early September, A380 direct with British Airways. Honestly not a great experience at all in economy. Headphones didn't work, very little room on a huge plane and the food did not sit well in my stomach at all!
I would fly 1st class yes its very expensive but the extras and experience make up for it. Also Lee as you are a tall person worth it for the leg room alone. If you are a solo traveller its only you to upgrade instead of a large family.
Mr Mac, the App that you are looking for is FREE NOW, it used to be exclusively for Taxis, but since covid it also allows Private Hire Vehicles as well. The App gives you an estimate of the fare, but all fares are metered and there is no surcharge. Up to Covid which is when I had to retire from driving, I used it. Their % cut is reasonable and I got some very good jobs from it.
Having an empty middle seat is almost like getting an upgrade, especially on a 10 hour transatlantic flight. Unfortunately I don't even remember the last time I got an empty middle seat. I fly return SFO to LHR every summer on United, and the plane is always packed to the gills
Airlines only allocate a certain number of seats for Miles redemption. I'm not familiar with Virgin, but on a number of airlines I use, it can be difficult to upgrade a miles ticket. Revenue protection works in mysterious ways ;-)
Airlines have Yield Management staff and software to determine how many seats to be available for award redemption... Usually they will try to unload the empty premium seats at the gate to get some revenue for them since it is a perishable item and worthless after the door closes

I believe they have a quota of seats for points purchase/upgrade. Once they have filled/sold them the rest are at money only. Many years ago I tried to use a large number of points for an upper class trip albeit in school half term as my wife worked in a school. There were no seats available in any upper class seats on every flight bar Tokyo even with us being flexible with dates. So we went to Tokyo and had a fabulous trip in Upper and an even better stay in Japan. .
I remember coming out of a Hammersmith restaurant back in 1978 just as Concorde was coming over head it was amazing and I’ve never experienced since, of course now it’s finished altogether but one day she may come back into service. It's actually an airline rule, pretty much all of them do it. You can only upgrade with points on bookings you've made with cash. So once you've used points to pay for something, you can't upgrade any further with points

I prefer easy access to the toilet from an aisle seat. Because of Covid (not me personally; I never got it) I haven't flown for four years. I used to be able to travel direct from Harwich to Hamburg, but that ferry crossing ended years ago.

I always stay at the Renaissance when I fly from Heathrow - great rooms with runway views. There are some great live aviation streamers on UA-cam. The best (by a country mile in my view) is Airliners Live from Manchester. Oh, and I always use UBER where they’re available.

Speaking of UA-cam, when you were at San Francisco Airport, if you would have looked off to the right of the airport, across the freeway, you'd be looking towards UA-cam headquarters, about 4 miles from SFO!! Grew up in Horsforth which is under the flight path for LBA, concorde used to make the odd appearance, remember everyone came out to see it fly over and remember the excitement. To this day love watching the planes. A day in that carpark looks like a top day out 😂

On seat availability with points, they have an allocation of reward seats and once they are gone you can't get them but may still be available for money. That's perfectly normal among airlines operating reward schemes. HOWEVER, Virgin just announced a sweeping change to make ALL seats always available with points so for your future flights its going to be different. But there's another 'however' here : The points pricing will be highly variable. No ready tables to refer to. It could be a bargain or it could be a waste of points. Points required will vary just like cash prices. Should be interesting to see.

The A 380 is the best,we have flown thousands and thousands of miles in them mainly in business and first and the wife Dee as showered a few time at 38000 feet, good trip Lee.Trailfinders are very good for booking trips often better than on line.
Mac always get 1st class upgrade coming back across the Atlantic you get a bed and a sleep and don’t arrive home tired and irritable it’s worth another day of your holiday.
Often use rewards flights to Vegas, but there are only a limited number of rewards seats per flight, so it's pot luck and if you get in early enough you're ok.
I hate it when people recline, especially without asking first, i usually put my knees up on the seat so they get the message. it also winds me up when people start putting the blinds down on a double seat window.
The supersonic airliner being developed in the US ATM has a 1000 mile range so can't even do coast to coast let alone transatlantic. Concorde was designed with slide rules and paper darts in a wind tunnel.

It makes a difference. I am going to be interested to see what you think of the place after the not so positive reports I have received and seen from there. Hope they are wrong and you paint a positive picture of the place. We will see what you think. LA will be good though I think and I hope you go to Chicago. One of my favourite US Cities to visit. I have been twice. Like a mini New York but less busy. Loved to go back soon.

£300 return is a great deal, but also probably shows the demand for San Francisco isn't high (only developed city to have a human poop map!)

I hate it when people recline, especially without asking first, i usually put my knees up on the seat so they get the message. it also winds me up when people start putting the blinds down on a double seat window.
The supersonic airliner being developed in the US ATM has a 1000 mile range so can't even do coast to coast let alone transatlantic. Concorde was designed with slide rules and paper darts in a wind tunnel.
Anyone reclines knees up and they go mad haha! Enjoy SF Lee have a brilliant time!

The usual excellent all details covered travel video Lee. Hope you enjoy San Francisco. I always enjoy flying to the US on Virgin and I am lucky I get to travel in Upper Class or Premium Economy. It makes a difference. I am going to be interested to see what you think of the place after the not so positive reports I have received and seen from there. Hope they are wrong and you paint a positive picture of the place. We will see what you think. LA will be good though I think and I hope you go to Chicago. One of my favourite US Cities to visit. I have been twice. Like a mini New York but less busy. Loved to go back soon.
Oh me Lee, so jealous of you at the moment, I'm currently grounded as expecting to have double hip replacement in the next few weeks and after that NO FLYING for 3 months in case of blood clots! Arrrrgh, I love to travel and you videoing all those long haul carriers set me off! Love going to America or to Dubai and Abu Dhabi!

"Fresh Air" by Quicksilver Messenger Service has a reference to "sweet California sunshine". QMS was a San Francisco psychedelic band of the mid-60's to mid-70's. The late great English pianist Nicky Hopkins was the piano player. I have been enjoying the SF/Bay Area sunshine for going on 43 years.
I'll be heading out to JFK soon (First time flyer) and the one problem I know I'll have is leg room, I'm 6'3 and seriously considering either booking business well in advance or an extra leg room seat. Great vid, as always.
I'm also 6"3, and I went on American from terminal 3 Heathrow to Chicago O'Hare a few months ago. I was fine to be honest in the economy seats.
