Being a DA I highly suggest working in an office with multiple specialties. Then gradually get into either perio or ortho. Easy to learn and better paying $26 plus. Some pay you cash some offices give you monthly incentives. Look for areas in busy cities. Being a Lead is also beneficial in a specialty. They are correct once you have reached the highest pay which is I think $33 it stops there and is very hard to get more. Dental assisting isn’t for everyone and I highly recommend only being a dental assistant for maybe 5 to 6 years and gradually shift into a diff career. Too many cons being in a dental field.
I love this insight- I started training in-office at $6.75/hr in 2005! And you’re right- I knowI was totally in their way 😂 It was hard but worth it. 17 years later I’m at $17/hr, in Utah. I only work one day a week and am also able to raise my family. Dental Assisting is so fun 🥰
$6.75?!! Thats super low even for 2005, good thing you’ve come up! Happy to know things are working for you 👍🏼❤️
That's what I mean. We are worth more. We are intelligent and hard working
How do you raise your family with working 1 day a week ?? I need to know the secret 🤔
@@R_o_s_em marry rich?
I’m starting a school in august the dentist does it at his own office. 3 month program only 2 days a week for 3 hours with my certificate after hopefully it’s better than going to a trade school
Unfortunately, there’s no difference with that program. Actually we don’t recommend those programs. Developing handskills is more important than the certificate. With those short programs you don’t have enough hands on practice
I work in NYC, I started in 2014. In New York is not required to be certified or to have an X-Ray license. I did a 3 month program. I started at $12/hr. Now in 2021 I am getting paid $30/hr. I achieved that by simply switching offices after 2-3 years if they didn’t give me a raise. I also worked as I temp assistant a lot last year and that helped me get exposed to many different kinds of dentistry, thus increasing my skills. Know your worth ladies and gents! If you don’t get that raise, move on!!! Another dentist will, I promise you, just make sure you’re confident and keep improving your skills!
😍👏🏼well said!
What did you said when they asked you why you leaving yor current job?
@@JoseFlores-jc3ns scheduling conflict
@@pabritova thank you, i am currently getting paid 16 an hour but i want more i have seen places offerr 20 an hour i have 2 interviews tomorrow. I just started working 8 moths ago so i have only 8 months experience.
@@JoseFlores-jc3ns ask for $20 and they might negotiate for something lower, or even offer more. Be confident and willing to learn. Never state your previous salary, even if they ask in some applications, you ARE NOT require to provide that info, at least not in NYC, look it up for your area. Good luck.
After 3 years of being a DA I am completely giving up . It’s ridiculous! Especially going to school for this shit I’m not 19 years old no more I got big girl bills now
Smart girl! I have been trapped. Get out. Save yourself
Do not become a D.A. it is the worst idea. You can not live off of only that. I have been doing it for 17 yrs. DA jobs rarely offer 401k, health or any other benefits. My daughter makes almost as much as i do working at PetSmart. Not worth it at.
Really? And you've been doing it for 17 years?.
@@rachaelvaldivieso3434 Yup. I'm a sucker. It was cool when I was wifey. But as a now single mother, it doesn't help make ends meet.
@@lalifromcali6439 I knowww. They still pay too low. I am still interning as a dental assistant, and I've seen a lot of what DA really do. I've been to three offices. It's a lot of work. They do most of the work than the dentists most times really. And the pay is so low starting off. I'm starting to think it's not for me.
@Rachael Valdivieso I really enjoy it. It's a fun, fast-paced job. But you are right. The pay doesn't add up to all that we do. That is the sad part.
However, the ball is in our court. Everyone is short staffed. So there is room for negotiation. You are worth a lot!
I am a CNA but just started getting trained on the job as a DA now 3weeks, but it's quite hard things are hard to remember , it's rough and tough before I knew it I got fired 3days ago before I got the experience but for different reasons 🥲 but hopefully I can keep around this weekly class @Dental vibes thanks for making these videos ✌️
While I waited for my RDH license I worked as an assistant..I realized how low the wage was😅.. DA’s deserve more..At least $16/hr especially in the NY area!
Probably more in NY since the cost of living is higher 🤷🏻♀️
Definitely more then $16 in NY.
That’s to low , I’m in MD and make 26
16 ?? Oh no honey. LOL WAY MORE THAN THAT. LOL
Well, the pay is trash. We arguably help with production more than hygiene does - hygiene gets a diagnosis, but the dentists makes hand over fist on the restorative work and can complete at least 2X’s more restorative work if (s)he has decent assistants, yet we still get scraps while most dentists live in a fancy house in a nice area. We deserve far, far more, and this job isn’t even close to worth it in most areas.
Of course dentists are gonna make much more money than the assistant. While the assistant was getting her six month certificate and partying on the weekends and had more time to do whatever she wanted the dentist he or she, had their face in a book studying. Most Dennis graduating now have a $500,000 education to pay off. So it is what it is
I’m 8 years in and fighting daily for a decent wage! I’ve did all my dentistry in Oklahoma, just left Mississippi(horrible pay!) I just moved to Arkansas.I love teeth 🦷 and really want dentistry to work out but it should not be this hard to find a good office with full benefits & is ran right! They’re in midst of opening a Walmart Heath Center that will offer dental services! I am hoping I can eventually get paid what I think is decent, & perhaps move away from chairside and just handle back office tasks with Walmart being a Fortune 500 company and all.
Watching this video made me have more hope in my dental assistant career. I just started 3 weeks ago and I literally wanted to leave because I thought this wasn’t for me. I still kind feel that way because my office is so fast and I I feel like body has time to teach me anything. Hence why I’m on you guy’s video now because I need help. It’s really hard. I wanted to cry so many days at work omg. It’s rough. 😭
The beginning is tough for everyone. Hang in there!
I agree I started two weeks ago.. this is harder then I thought. I also felt like this wasn’t for me and I wanted to cry as well. I need to start being open minded ,have confidence and trust myself we all start somewhere
Hey girlie! Hit me up if u need any input! I’ve been doing this for 15 years and I remember the beginning!
You are not alone I’m going through that right now heading into my third week and almost gave up. Broke into tears two weeks in and reminded myself that I have what it takes and I should give myself time. Happy I’m not the only one who felt this way ❤
@@occhimarroni88 can I hit you up too? 😂
I got lucky. I am learning on the job while I wait for the next available semester that is not waitlisted. She took me on at $20/hr. Still not enough to live on in Ontario Canada, as average rent for a 1bdrm is $1500-1750/mth, but it is a decent starting point.
Good for you!
You definitely getting a good pay, some clinics are miserable they won’t pay you more than. 23 even if you studied the whole year
Reasons I'm happy to live in Washington: you can make up to 30 as an rda or cda. If you work for an agency. In this state private practice is starting to offer enough to push corporations to offer more. This state is about to be a great place for rda, cda, and cnas.
I’m in origin right next door!
I don’t like cheap doctors. Being a DA or RDA is too much work.
Thank you so much 😄👍
Your content is amazing. You helped me a lot. Where I come from we need a 3 year training to work as a dental assitant.
With a salary from 898$ in the first year to 1007$ in the third year. Your work is so important. I hope it will be recognised by all people and your salary increased accordingly.
Going to school to be a Dental Assistant! I never clicked on a post so fast in my LIFE😩😭😭
Get ready for the Pumpy ride 😅 it’s worth it though! Dentistry is so amazing 🦷
Doesn’t anyone ever ask for more pay? I see in the comments below, many assistants rather just leave and try a new office instead of requesting a pay raise and stay. Doctors lose a ton of money losing experienced workers and having to train and shadow new assistants.
We do and also encourage other DAs to do the same! But there are many practice owners that will decline a $1 raise and would rather lose their establish team member just to hire a new one that will end up “costing” them more. Thus the reason many DAs rather leave than deal with the hassle of cheap (for lack of a better word) doctors. Constantly having to train significantly slows down the productivity of the office…so you’re just preaching to the choir! 🤣😅 We wish practice owners would once and for all recognize this!
@@DentalVibes [preaching and singing]. 1000% agree.
@@DentalVibes Do you ladies think a $1 raise is good after two years at $14 per hour?
@@COURTNEYVCK depends on how much you improved on. $14 is super low though
@@DentalVibes Thanks for your feedback! I can definitely say that I have improved. When I first got hired I was fresh out of school. Now I have learned all of the treatments and procedures, I no longer need supervision when making crowns or doing scans etc. I definitely feel like I am being lowballed. I asked to have an evaluation so that we can discuss how much I wanted to make but my doctor just told the office manager to bump me up to $1. I don’t feel like that was right .
I just put in an application yesterday. Because I know I will never get paid what I deserve where I'm at.
You have to do what’s best for you, and sometimes that means moving around...good luck 🙂🍀
Ladies, do you not have a state dental assistant association to standardize education, criteria for accredited programs, and wage/benefit scales?? They should also be looking out for dental assistants in terms of work environments.
We have Dental Assistants Associations but we aren’t sure what they are doing in terms of looking out for us 😅😬 Eventually we will get involved, until then we are spreading knowledge from our own experiences and whats worked for us 👍🏼
@@DentalVibes I strongly recommend that ALL dental assistants contact their associations as those are the organizations that are there to support and serve you. WIthout membership, they can't know what the issues are, what DA's want, and without participation, they are limited in what they can do. We need to support each other collectively because we truly are stronger together than we are as individuals. Thanks for anything you can do to find out more about associations in the US and what they do or can do for you. Here in Canada, we have 3 levels of associations in some provinces Local/Provincial/National, and we strongly encourage support and participation in all three. I would say that these organizations are the key to advancement for dental assisting. Best wishes!
@@edmontondentalassistantsas4747 You are so right. Unfortunately here in the States there isn't any organization or association that really advocates for dental assistants.
I started at $18/hour! I took an online course and they gave me the hands on experience. Once I get my CDA I’ll go up to $22!
That’s great! Not every office is willing to do that much training these days. Good for you 🙂🦷
Started in Washington making $18 at CHC with Amazing benefits back in 1998 then eventually went to private practice making $25/30
This is all I know!! Know in Tx and they want to pay $15 with zero benefits disgusting
I hated this job, stuck around trying to be a good employee. The pay is horrendous, no benefits, no 401K. They give you pizza parties and say your family for doing a great job. Doctors don’t want to pay for reliable help. It also does not help IF they have an office manager, and shes a you know what.. I worked for a guy whose office manager had no education or experience with the dental field. When a prob came up, she had no clue what you were talking about, and did not know the dental terms. I do not recommend this position to anyone.
Love your videos! Honest, informative, and great advise.💙
Thank you!!
I am not agree where i live and work and believe me i chanced a few dentist offices as assistent and work alsmost 18 years as a hygien assistent they will not pay us more even you know you worth and you work hard and deserve it they will not give it so probaly you have to be lucky with the boss i am glad i finish my study next year and quitt dentistry for ever
Gabby is heaven sent 💕 she literally helped me with ALOT!!!
You got this girl!
Here in MD , in my area we make 25-30
I’ve been a hygienist since 2011 and I’ve met some OG assistants and they help me out a lot.🤩🙌🏼
I’ll be a dental assistant nearly 💕thanks a lot
This job is trash ,I live in Canada paid 20000 dollars for this program in private school ,working for one year experience, such a hard job and a lot assignments, stressful job ,your health is at risk with blood ,saliva ,had working time and bad position now I regret a lot this such a hard job with must dangers things with very low pay ,I think dentists make a money with working and helping dental assistant and it doesn’t have any benefits just get tired and sick with this job ,most people work in beauty store get paid more and benefits and dental assistant doesn’t have anything I will quit this job with such a regretfully
I was trained on the job as dental assistant pediatric office my supervisor was so great. In 3 months i get a raise I been there 2 months already and I’m on my own now when i have a question they are very helpful.
Amazing content I actually started at 10 im make more the 20 with 8 years of experience. Being a great assistant and having experienced gives you a better income.
💯
Been a DA in Massachusetts for about 6 years. I get paid a decent income. BUT I come home from work EXHAUSTED. I barely get time to take a bathroom break! They’ve taken my lunch from 1 hour down to 30 minutes. Yesterday I was the hygienist, assistant, front desk, and janitor.
When the dentist has cleaning I need to X-ray,chart, polish, and floss. As well as walk out any procedures we do.. 😢 all they do is come in and use the cavitron… I don’t know what to do anymore.
Why doesn’t the dentist have a hygienist?? Glad to hear you’re happy with your income but at that pace you’ll burn out in 2 years. Have you talked about this with your team?
dental assiting big waste of time
Where are these Dental Vibes shirts from?
Since graduation in October 2020 I've been working with a dentist who only does cleaning and buccal filling. I regret staying there for that long. I wasted 7 months for nothing
Don’t be pessimistic about it! People stay YEARS at the wrong job so at least you now know what to look for and you got experience in the field. Good luck!
@@DentalVibes Thank you so much for your nice words 🙂
Any recommendations for a nice scrubs company that ships to Canada as well? I hate big baggie scrubs so I’m looking for recommendations ❤️
We don’t know who ships to Canada, but a few of the major scrubs company in the US are FIGS, Cherokee, Grey’s Anatomy, Dickies...We have a store in our area where we can try on and purchase scrubs. Is better to try them 😅 Do you have a store in your town?
carhartt makes super comfy and flattering scrubs as well

If a dental assistant has spent time in school and has completed a course, A dental office should be offering her a hell of a lot more money than target would be. And if a dental Office is not willing to pay the going rate and they want to pay target rates then Lady’s pass that office up. That’s an office that’s gonna run you to the ground and not pay you your worth. There are many many dental offices that are willing to pay you for your knowledge and skill. Even if you are a basic cheer side. You don’t have to be at a to make above target wages laugh my ass off! This video is Ridiculous
No one graduates a DA program with formed skills. It takes time to learn. Your first office will be training you all the way.
There’s literally no information here! I’ve been in the field for 19 years and this isn’t informative 🤦🏻♀️
Thanks for your feedback 😄
I live in New Jersey at I started a $18.50 an hour with raises after every DANB board exam
What is the pto that you usually get and 401k? What other benefits do you get being a dental assistant?

First off I LOVE this channel! I am currently in a program (only 12 weeks however it it very hands on and fast paced) I'm a pretty fast learner, and previously was in school for nursing (just turned out to not be for me) I am about to finish my program and will have my RDA, X-ray Certification, BLS Certification, and I've set up a class for getting my Nitrous too. I'm in texas and most the dental assistants here start out around 14-18 from what I've found
You go girl! Good luck to you and thanks for the love 💕

Plus I am a hard worker so I'm delivering on all of my promises by just jumping in and doing everything I can like they say fake it till you make it act confident for the patients sake and I agree dental is different! So much different I just wanted to share my experience with interviewing.

So you have to take off the dentist’s hat and learn from an assistant’s perspective. La edad no es un problema!
