Shark Evo GT Review - Two helmets for the price of one?

  • The Shark Evo GT helmet offers something a little bit different to the majority of modular or flip front helmets. The swing back chin bar was first introduced by Roof Helmets, but Shark has taken the idea and enhanced it. The Evo GT, therefore, offers you the benefits of a full-face motorcycle helmet as well as the wind in your face experience of a jet or open-face lid.
But how does it stack up against the competition? I take a look at the key features in this road test.

I completely forgot to mention that the Helmet comes with a 5 year warranty. I also realised that I mentioned the negatives more than once, which might make the review sound a little negative. All helmets will have some niggles, but overall this is a good option for those that don't want to ride in a standard modular lid with the chin bar above their head.

Great very thorough review as usual. There seems to be a lot going on with the Evo GT, and that's not always/necessarily a good thing when it comes to a helmet. Happy new year to you!

I've been using the Evo's lids for years and agree they can be a little heavy and noisy but when touring it is so handy to be able to flip the chin bar to have a chat.

A good and fair review - I have the older Evo One model in XL. There is an issue with the pinlock scratching (have now removed it!). The fit is also quite tight around the upper ear area for me. I tend to use it for short around town journies where the flipped over chin bar is a great feature.
    Cheers, Nick

WELL i found your review spot on and interesting to me covered 100 per cent of the pros and cons that i have found in my one year of using this as one of my two primary touring lids. I wont repeat the niggles you covered as it would be redundant as you did a superb job of demo without being too overly critical. The bottom line for me is the helmet is no doubt a love hate lid with the love winning by a margin duly because it is so good in cold wet conditions with periods of heavy rain and major wind the busy bits stayed well put and I never got any drips of fog of any measure and stayed relative warm . That goes a long way if you live in the UK I should thing . I did notice a few tiny bits that different from my model mostly the vent controls but I will continue to rid this helmet and riding time shared with my real main stay for solo trips my Arai Xd4 which I've used now for a decade though a few evolutions all of which have kept consistent with the needs of the Adventure touring and Touring hobby . Keep up the good work . A love your style and have yet to disagree with anything so we must be subjectedly similar in taste and expectations.

Great vid. I currently have a shark evoline 3 which looks like the predecessor to evo gt so when I update it’ll probably be to this as I love the convenience of popping my face open say when getting fuel or stopping for a drink. Also with the chin going back it helps with weight balance.
I think wind noise is not helped with the grooves on the side but I counter this with ear plugs if I know I have a lot of higher speed riding.
Just fitted a Sena 3s as it has a similar control to the sharktooth. I didn’t want the big block like other Sena/ cardo style units

I had the Shark equivalent back in 2010 for a trip thru the Americas. I hit a pig at 80km/hr on sealed road and landed on my side and slid for a bit. Happy to say that while the helmet impacted pretty hard on the road and was scratched up across the hinge area, the helmet suffered no damage. I was impressed. Sure I should have replaced it. But I was in Nicaragua and not likely to find a quality helmet. Served me well for the remaining year through South America. It also survived a collision (open face position this time) when I rode out of a carpark in Panama and a descending steel door hit me in the face, dragging me over the luggage and dropping me on my back while the bike kept going until it fell over. Was rushed to emergency to stitch up a cut to my forehead and suffered a grazed nose. But the helmet, again, held up magnificently! And so did my reputation for not replacing helmets! Haha. To be young again!... Great review. I think you covered all the pros and cons really well. I'm definitely considering another. Mainly due to it's high Gringo Survival rating :)

Hi Gary, Happy New Year to you too! The Neotec II is a good lid, but I did find it a little claustrophobic. For a modular lid I would recommend at least taking a look at the x-lite x1005 ultra Carbon, thats a great helmet. I'm also going to be reviewing the Schuberth C5 soon too. Arai Tour 4 is a great lid, but I hear rumours of a Tour 5.....

Great review but gave me a pause about purchasing one. Main reason I was considering this helmet is because I understand its round oval shaped suitable for my head. Most reviews never talk about the shape of the helmet which for many of us is super important because our head shapes don't work with most helmets.

I have the evo gt and like it alot but there are a few more issues. Firstly my seal has come loose 3 or 3 times now after reglueing it. Secondly I fitted the shark intercom and its not great. With thick gloves you can't push the buttons but the helmet is not great if you want to fit an intercom like a packtalk because of the edging strip around the bottom of the helmet and the recess for the speakers is far too small and shallow to fit other brands. Next the chin curtain is a nice touch but if you open the chin bar while it's down your in trouble and the first you'll know about it is when you try to close the chin bar and it locks up straight in front of your eyes.(always fun while riding). Lastly the visorr you can ride with it open a few mm to let air in its either open or closed because the ratchet isn't strong enough. £400 is far too much for this helmets build quality but will probably think about buying a newer version in the future.

Hello I do love your gear reviews, however I have some observations to make re this helmet. I owned a Shark Evo GT and switched to the LS2 Valliant I. This is because the Shark mechanism came out to be quite flimsy compared to the LS2 and yes you are correct, removing the visor on the Shark is a pain in the ..... Shark has copied the small tabs from LS2 and I managed to brake those 2x when removing the visor on the LS2 to clean them. There has to be a better mechanism to solve this. I am looking at the new LS Valiant X as a replacement for mine in a years time. Happy New Year and KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK. Thank you

The same sort of idea as my Roof Boxer V8 but not as attractive. But the Shark looks better with the chin bar round the back, a position I rarely use with the Roof. I like the sun visor. The limited peripheral vision would put me off. Overall, I wouldn't buy one. I would buy another Roof, though.

I have the EVO ES as well. I'd prefer the pinlock solution on the visor as mine had the antifog coating instead with no pinlock tabs. Once the coating is scratched, which is pretty much inevitable, there's nothing you can do, except notice how scratched it is everytime you pick it up. Guess I'll have to get a new visor and run the fiddly tab removal gauntlet.

Good review and helpful too. I've had this helmet for a year and didn't realise there is a chin sock. Feel like such a noob now. Your criticism is valid and I'd agree it's nonetheless a solid piece of kit. I haven't had issues with the flip system even while riding, and enjoy the ease of getting it on and off my head. The modularity also makes it ideal in any weather. I have unfortunately scratched the visor due to riding all winter. Wiping off rain is fine, but rock salt not so much.
One major gripe I've got is fitting Comms. I got a good Cardo set but the speakers, though flat, have a larger diameter than the helmet's indent for them. As a result it's incredibly painful as pressure on the ears, unless I Dremel out more space. Smaller speakers are very hard to find.
