2025 Mazda CX-80 Introduced - Powerful Turbo Engines & Hybrid Options for Eco-Conscious Driving!
Mazda’s strategy of offering relatively large engines with varying levels of hybridization in their midsize and large SUVs doesn’t seem like such a far-fetched idea. Introducing the CX-80, the third model in Mazda’s lineup to be launched in Australia, and one of four SUVs built on Mazda’s new platform. It joins the existing CX-60 and the larger CX-90, with the CX-70 expected to arrive soon. But first, let’s clarify how these models fit together. Stay focused here. The now-discontinued CX-8 was essentially a narrower version of the outgoing CX-9, so one might expect the CX-80 to be a slimmer sibling of the CX-90. However, with the adoption of Mazda’s new platform, the family dynamics have shifted.
Instead, the CX-80 is more closely aligned with the CX-60, featuring a longer wheelbase and slightly taller height to accommodate three rows of seats. Meanwhile, the CX-70 and CX-90 share the same exterior dimensions, with the CX-70 offering five seats and the CX-90 offering seven. The reasoning behind this comes down to regional markets: the larger CX-70 and CX-90 are primarily targeted at the U.S. market, while the CX-60 and CX-80 are aimed at Japanese and European buyers, where having just two models simplifies the lineup. In Australia, however, all four models will be available.
Like the CX-60, the CX-80 will offer three powertrain options when it arrives in late 2024, including a 3.3-liter inline-six turbo petrol engine and a similarly configured diesel engine. Pricing hasn’t been confirmed yet, but early estimates suggest the petrol model will start at just under $60,000. The diesel version is expected to carry a premium of around $2,000, while the third option-a plug-in hybrid (PHEV)-is predicted to be the most popular, even though it will cost approximately $10,000 more.
The PHEV version, known as the CX-80 2.5 e-Skyactiv PHEV, features a 17.8kWh lithium-ion battery paired with a 129kW/270Nm electric motor, integrated into an eight-speed automatic transmission. This is combined with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder petrol engine, resulting in a total output of 241kW and 500Nm of torque. For eco-conscious drivers, the vehicle can travel up to 60 kilometers in electric-only mode before needing to engage the petrol engine.
