Most people will say that you need to learn LaTeX to make a good thesis however I completely disagree with that statement. Nowadays MS Word has almost all the features and in fact more than what LaTeX provides. Moreover, you need to learn LaTeX which is time-consuming task if you are new to it.

Presently it is not possible as far as I know. I have even contacted Microsoft for the same and they too said it is possible only for some type of arrows. They have taken this as feedback and might consider it for update.

There is no shortcut for inserting long arrows. However you can anytime go to Insert tab->Symbols-.> Liness and then select arrows. Pressing shift while drawing arrows will guide you in making horizontal/vertical arrows.

Automatic stretching of arrows are only available for certain arrows like rightarrow. It doesn't work for equilibrium arrow.

For me it is working. it is LRHAR in small case. Which version of Ms Word you are using. To answer your another question, how to write above and below just use \above() and \below() to type above and below and include the text that you want to include above/below inside brackets like if you want to type Temperature above arrow then use \above(Temperature). To make this work properly please make sure that it works properly, \above (\below) should immediately follow any text/symbol (no spaces) above/below which you want to type. Please feel free to reply if it is not clear. You can see 10:40 of this video for above and 11:32 of this video for below and 11:57 when you need to type both above and below.

Yes and no! Yes equilibrium symbol cannot be enlarged but its problem of Ms Word. No because, we can write above or below it. Please see complete video. You can use \above( " Text Above") to write above any symbol or text including equilibrium.
