This is probably one of my top ten episodes of the whole series. I love the way O'Neill progresses through having all that data in his head, knowing things without really understanding them. Also, we've got so used to seeing stargate addresses always using exactly seven symbols, yet the gate itself is built so that it can use up to _nine_ at a time, and this gives us our first hint as to why.
"he doesn't remember meeting the Asgard" is what I'd call a radical interpretation of the text. Clearly he meant he doesn't remember any of the knowledge uploaded to his brain, which the Asgard's removed.
In base-8 math only the digits 0-7 exist, so when you get beyond single digit counting the number in sequence after 7 is 10, hence "10 equals 8" which as you can imagine until you're aware of it base-8 math makes no sense. You'd see something like 5 x 5 = 31
To be honest, they weren't looking for a devils trap, that's why they didn't care about the giant blue circle on the ground 🤣 base 8 math means the base is 8, it is called the octal number system, which means it can be divided in half all the way to 1, better base for a number system for more advanced math than base 10 (which we use in day to day calculation) That is what I think he meant with 10 = 8 (Change the base of your calculations from 10 to 8)
Jack walking through the circle on the floor and activating the device, while none of the others walking through it earlier to no effect, will be very important later. It will be of major import to all the series of the entire franchise: SG-1, Atlantis and Universe. I won't spoil anything, just saying remember it. This will be important later. You don't have enough information yet to puzzle it out but the characters will figure it out later. And, no, Jack isn't an alien or anything, so don't worry it's nothing like that. Just be aware that a pattern will happen and eventually they'll figure it out. For now, just think of it as, they were very young and the very young don't always understand the grownup things.
10:16 The GDO should be used to send the code and also to receive confirmation that the iris is open. If you connect to the alternative gate there won't be anyone there to clear the code, so you really shouldn't go into the gate without confirmation when you dial Earth.
There is a science fiction short story (Arthur C. Clarke's _Rescue Party,_ with a Wikipedia entry) about an interplanetary survey vessel that has been tasked with looking at a planet (Earth, as is revealed) with a sun about to go nova. The idea is that human technological evolution is much faster than that of most aliens. I think the the premise of this episode is based on that idea: Humans are uniquely "curious", as O'Neill puts it, and willing to spend vast resources on science, research, and development. The ending of _Rescue Party_ hints that humanity, though currently far behind the rest of the galaxy, will catch up and become dominant fairly quickly. Thus far, _Stargate: SG1_ has shown humanity taking a similar track, and I suppose we may expect that pace to continue throughout the series.
Can we talk about the fact that the Asgard are apparently a nudist society? I feel like we don't talk enough about the fact the fact the Asgard are naked.
I wonder when that shift happened. Just think that one day.. Like 10000 years ago.. Thor beamed himself into a meeting with some people of The Nox, the transporter fudged up and he just went with it. Other Asgard thought this was hilarious and they all decided "Well.. We're dickless anyways.. Might as well"
here's a bit of the tech lore that happens with Stargate fans as the finicky bits are fun for us so brace yourself (lol) The Iris over the main gate is something like .2 cm off from the event horizon, far enough away for a wormhole to be able to connect not enough for matter to rematerialise fully so the impacts you hear are just particulate matter hitting it. IF it were to be that .2 cm closer, then the wormhole wouldn't be able to engage and the connection couldn't happen, that's what the welders are doing to Gate 2.0, they're putting a fixed cover over the Gate to prevent it from ever being used by anyone again. It's how the Ancient Egyptians were able to lock the Earth off from the rest of the Galaxy after killing Ra, they put a coverstone over the gate that blocked the wormhole from being used.
Jack: We are a very curious race. Asgard: You have taken the first steps to becoming the 5th race. Basically, our need to seek knowledge and experience as a species is only the first step to becoming one of the 5 most advanced races in the history of the galaxy. That alone should tell you how vital it was for the human race to be "explorers" by nature. That just sitting around and accepting 'good enough' was never actually 'good enough'. It was the drive to seek out, explore, advance both our knowledge of the world around us an the skies above us, as well as continue to move forward as a society. All of this could be a bundle of potential not thought possible..... and yet, one of the most dangerous things about our species because we constantly make mistakes and assumptions based on information that we have yet truly mastered.
A pivotal episode in Stargate, and a great one. As others pointed out, he only lost the downloaded knowledge, not the memories made after. He might remember that he was drawing a dialing device, but will have 0 idea how he did it and what it means. Fun fact, i also was near someone with COVID on Sunday, but so far nothing, still negative tests.
Shannan!!! :) They got all the "stuff" out of his head, but he sure does remember them: "...I think we're gonna be all right." He's just been told humans are on the way to becoming the 5th race. Feels good. Sure he remembers that, but now his mind is clear of the Ancients knowledge.
31:00 Thats a bit jumping shark don’t you think. Pretty sure Jacks answering Teal’c’s question about the knowledge in his head and not Daniels what happen on his trip threw the gate.
Their a podcast that talk about early civilizations and they lift records that talk about us being created by aliens who use part of their DNA so that we’re hybrids of them. It’s actually pretty interesting to look into if you’r into things like that but the reason why I was bringing this up is there’s a guy who wrote a book that said there is a intelligence level or development level I can’t remember what the highest one is I believe it was six, and that there is species from other planets that have reached that level of intelligence, and that is human race is only two level four I believe so we have a ways to go until we can reach the higher level. Which in the show it kind of brings up exactly what he wrote in that book that there is other species out There that are up there and that we’re gradually getting to that point, but there’s so much we still have to accomplish to be able to get there
15:05 You have not seen it before, but you will see it again, when Teal'c understands it a little more and standing in a boxer's posture and moving around. 19:33 Please don't, I'm sure it's not good for you to spend too long at it without a break. 31:16 I think he just means he doesn't remember any of the ancient knowledge that was downloaded into his brain, not that he doesn't remember meeting the Asgard (I'm finding it a little hard to remember that these little guys are called the Asgard, whereas in Marvel comics/movies, the realm is Asgard, the people are Asgardians).
Just a heads up, and please don't feel offended as we sometimes need to point this out to people. One of her biggest pet peeves is people spelling her name incorrectly, it's Shannan with an A. 😌✌️
@@TonyWasHere I appreciate what you're trying to do here, but it's a bit silly that she gets so bothered by this, in my opinion. She has a non-standard spelling of the name, that isn't know to most people. It would be like me getting upset that people called me "Will", when I spelled it "Wyll".
@@willsofer3679 While it may be your opinion that it's not a big deal, it is however a thing that bothers her and that's why we do sometimes have to correct people when they misspell her name. It's not often-and possibly unique- that we ever hear Carter dialogue like this: "Really? Wow." Disease is a funny thing, maybe you have some resistance to that particular strain. Have you done a test, it's possible you got it really mildly? I only had tiredness and felt a little dizzy for a couple of days, I had no other symptoms.

Too late. 😏🤪
Just to clarify he remembers meeting the Asgard he just doesn't have any of the ancient Knowledge.
