I became a David Letterman fan from watching a handful of his morning shows during the summer of 1980. I was on summer vacation from school (between 6th grade and 7th grade), and began my days with Dave. I thought he was cool. I caught an occasional glimpse of LNwDL when I was a high school student in the mid-1980s, and then started taping the broadcasts in spring 1986.
I never saw the morning show when it was on but my brother did. He told me about Dave's late night show and I was hooked after the first one I saw, that was the first week of LNWDL. Thanks brother and thanks Donz for making this material available. It's made my COVID time much more bearable.
That is crazy to think that David Letterman was scared of failing again after the cancellation of his morning show because it was not only too short for him, but it was also very humiliating for him, but look at him now. He had a very long career as a late night talk show host, and he has influenced almost all of the late night talk show hosts who came on after him. So, in some ways, his failed morning show was a huge blessing for him. Have you realized that?
I’m glad Dave fondly remembered Edwin Newman. Mr. Newman’s news updates are one of the few things I remember from the morning show - even though I kept wondering if they were supposed to be funny like SNL’s Weekend Update.
said it before, say it again..........I was frightened when Mr. Giller posted this,..because I jumped to the silly conclusion that Daves 1980 morning show had died..lol..cheers
Don't go crazy wondering!! ;-) The gentleman sitting and graciously listening to Dave's story (0:10 - 1:08) is British actor Edward Woodward ('The Equalizer' CBS 1985-1989). Yes, that was a nice show. Geez 35 yrs ago.....
I remember two things about David Letterman's morning show (I think): 1) On one of the "Stupid Pet Trick" segments, a woman had a dog named "Weiner" and my mom cracked up at that. We had a family dog (poodle) named Tyrone that my brother and I also called " Weiner" for some reason. I'll never forget my mom cracking up at that. 2) On one of the episodes, I think there was a singer-songwriter who performed a hilarious song called " Final Exam." My sister and I watched it and we were both cracking up. I only remember one lyric, which was "Feel free to cheat!" I think the singer played guitar as well. I can't believe it's been 40 years ago!
My favorite bit from the David Letterman show was Edie McClurg explaining that you could make three bean salad with only one kind of being and magic markers
I was in college classes at the time of the morning show, that's why I never saw it on. The only show we watched regularly in our dorm was Mister Roger's Neighborhood after our classes were done. Then we'd go to dinner and do homework and laundry. Not much room for anything else.
i remember watching the david letterman morning show. (it was good.) i remember more that my brother was a big fan. i remember his HBO special on the prowl with david latterman. i was a big fan of his late night show on NBC before he got all politcal. or maybe more I got all political......
Probably because Fred Silverman didn't have (as none of us do) a crystal ball. He liked Dave's style and thought he'd do well on the air. Eventually, he did, but late at night, not mid-morning. It's easy to ask how Silverman would think Dave would do well in the morning when you have 40 years to look back on, hindsight being 20/20, but if you were President of NBC in 1980, you might very well have put Dave on yourself.
@@ApartmentKing66 I understand hindsight, but there were also a few years of his appearances on the Carson show to judge what style of comedy and presenting Dave had. When he sits down with Johnny and talks with him, anyone viewing would sense he has a very distinct brand of humor which might not be fantastic at 10am in the morning.
@@Eggmanontheair Well, it's easy to armchair quarterback someone else's decisions, but one thing a lot of people don't seem to realize is that Silverman was first at CBS (he put "All In The Family" on the air and developed "Hollywood Squares," which NBC got), then went to ABC to turn THEIR fortunes around (which he did handsomely) before NBC came calling for him to do the same thing for them. By the time his NBC tenure began, he was basically competing with HIMSELF. Remember, he was the one who put ABC *ON TOP* after over 20 years as an "also-ran." Silverman was the one who, while at ABC, green-lighted such shows as "Baretta," "The Bionic Woman," "Welcome Back, Kotter," "Love Boat," "Fantasy Island," "What's Happening!," "Barney Miller," "Charlie's Angels," "Three's Company," and on and on and on. He made ABC the powerhouse it was before jumping to NBC. His problem at NBC was that he'd outdone himself at ABC.
Mr. Giller, would you happen to know where one could find any video of Mr. Letterman’s appearance on Des O’Connor’s show? Also, thank you for doing the lord’s work 😊👍 Thanks, A gracious fan and admirer of your channel
Thanks Don Giller for all the Letterman comedy gold!!

Man, that's great seeing Dave being so gracious to Jon Stewart when Jon was just starting out...
Agreed. Those are two extremely bright and quick-witted gentlemen right there. Love them both.
Funny thing is that show is basically to Jon Stewart what Dave's morning show was. Dave has shown up on a lot of people's shows starting out it seems.
@@x-crisis Just as David Letterman made his first appearance on The Tonight Show when Johnny Carson was host in 1978.

40 years since debut of "The David Letterman Show." I feel so old now. Thanks, Don!
Two of the best communicators alive...Costas and Letterman.
Hard to believe it was 40 years ago. If you reverse 40 years from the debut, that's before WW2! Time is crazy.
And 25 years ago today (3:35), Dave marked the occasion of the 15th anniversary, which warps my little mind.
I remember being a little jolted the first time I saw a clip that included an Edwin Newman news update, and Ed mentioned “President Carter.”
I loved his morning show.
So did I.
Me too!
He hooked me with his morning show!!
I never knew Dave doing an impression of young Dave would be as funny as it is
5:33 was some of the biggest off-camera laughter from Dave since Calvert couldn’t figure out how to hold a microphone.
I always have appreciated how highly Dave spoke of Edwin Newman.

7:00 - You can see Dave pulling a Carson and taking a drag while off camera for a few seconds
OMG. Don, you're making me feel SOOOOO old. 40 gadddom years.
It was a great show.

Sounds like London Wainwright. Will explore further.

Boy Dave was right. The Daily Show was legendary.
Thank you for all of the uploads Don, Would you by any chance have any more of The Late Late Show with Tom Snyder? I really enjoy his interviews.
I have them all, but I’ve digitized very few. The next project.
Would you please thank the "rear two" of the Captain TV unit for turning around before leaving the stage? Hey-o!
Baby Dave was sooooo handsome!!!!

The '80 set was Ikea before Ikea
i went to a few. lot's of fun for free for a college student.
How on earth could NBC think the great David Letterman suited a morning time slot???

Maybe because it was championed by the same NBC suit who thought "Supertrain" was gonna be a hit show?

One thing that I learned watching TV: talk shows with a fish tank in their sets are doomed to fail. I mean, look at the Chevy Chase Show. Same deal.
Cigar smoking. Wow. Glad he gave that up
Does anybody else out there remember the episode when they drilled a hole in Dave's desk?
To hook up a new mic. Nope, no one remembers.
I never knew Jon Stewart was in a biker gang during high school.
October 14, 1980 was Floyd Stiles Day!

Captain TV, LOL
"I think what he's smelling is the Minoxidil"
Got any clips of Dave from the 90s WITHOUT a cigar in his mouth?
Who is that smokeshow interviewing Dave at 0:01? She's gorgeous.
She's probably 80yo by now.
