  • When Dolly Parton got inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame, she promised to record a “rock” album to justify her inclusion. Well, not only did she make good on her word by recording a mix of cover songs and originals for an album aptly titled “Rockstar,” but also enlisted a stacked lineup of guests to duet with (including Paul McCartney, Elton John, Miley Cyrus, Steven Tyler, Pink, Rob Halford, Stevie Nicks, and a TON more) … but does the country icon hit the right notes with her attempt to be a rockstar, or do her covers of classics by bands like Led Zeppelin, Queen, the Beatles and the Rolling Stones leave behind a sour aftertaste?
Find out what Matt and Zach think in Epic Footnote Productions’ “2 Minutes to Review,” a podcast that’s part album review and part competition. In each episode, both hosts are given two minutes each to review a newly released album or a classic record they’re revisiting. Whoever gives the longest review in under two minutes wins.

Let me just preface, I am a huge huge Dolly Parton fan and old school country music fan such as Merle Haggard Waylon Jennings George Jones Johnny Paycheck etc
I can appreciate this review. I can understand the remarks pertaining to a few songs such as I dreamed about Elvis.
Being the fan of hers that I am however throughout her career there have been songs that have been written by her that I've even thought were just strange, but of course went along with it and just enjoyed them for what they were.
I think what helps me with songs like that is the fact that she sort of writes a story and just is playful with it and plays characters in her songs. I feel like every one of the songs that she personally writes, I feel like I've read a novel once the song is over.
She's definitely a great storyteller in that aspect and I can appreciate that, sometimes of course it is a bit strange. For instance I played the song "me and Little Andy" to a group of friends, they just thought it was weird that she was playing the voice of a small child and I could understand but I love it.
One of the greatest examples of that is her song, "these old bones"
I've been pretty amped up for this album and it was everything that I expected I enjoyed it very much there were a few songs that I liked but I probably wouldn't listen to again such as the one with kid Rock and even rockstar I wasn't a huge fan of.
I think for me my favorite song on this album is one that she wrote decades ago, "my blue tears"
I equally enjoyed the duet with John Fogerty.
And I also thought purple Rain was done well, I think Prince would be happy with it.
I also enjoyed how careful you were as to not let people think that you were super critical of Dolly Parton LOL because she is a national treasure.

Thanks so much for listening, and for the great insight you shared! You mentioned that "These Old Bones" is a great example of her as a storyteller - what about that particular song do you think works so well?
And "My Blue Tear" is a great cut - if anything it highlights how an album of her doing rock renditions of her classics would be been fun! Is there a song of hers you'd love to hear her do a rock version of?

I think her previous bluegrass cover of Stairway to Heaven on the Halos and Horns album is an even better rendition than the version on this album. She really made it her own on that album whereas this one she was trying to keep more of the rock style and it doesn't fit as well.

I like the album. Truth is... There are very few music artists who could have had so many other music icons clamor to be part of another artist's album.

Your review of Rockstar is ridiculous. Purple Rain is amazing and has gospel flare. Her originals are great! "Bittersweet " is one of her best written songs. " I dreamed about elvis" is a fun song done in that 50s 60s doo wop style that tells a true story about her and elvis.
I think the album is amazing and a great departure from her other albums. Obviously no one really listens to your reviews which is good because you get so many facts wrong. Be like dolly and do better 😉🙄

As much as I love Dolly Parton, this is not her style in my honest opinion. She’s better doing country!
