Genius Jamtracks just downloaded the android version. Seems great. I have a feature suggestion, if that's ok- how about a "drum solo" feature where you get 8 bars or whatever of the kind of things drummers do - maybe just a mixture of the different feels, or maybe something different. We could then practise coming back in confidently after the drummer's been clattering around.

      Hi Matthew,
This is a link from the Genius Jamtracks Forums page where I have posted two saved tracks of the app that might interest you (the orange links):
      geniusjamtracks.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=29
The idea is quite similar to what you have suggested. It's a setup which I use for practicing trade fours with drums. Of course every time you press "randomize all" you have new polyrhythmic phrases from every instrument. Hope you enjoy it!
(The orange links open only by using the app)

THX Aimee for a great review. It convinced me to get it. Love it. Responding to the change in rhythms is a little beyond me right now but I'll persist with it. I keep going back to your review for the great advice on ways to use it. I love that the app categorises tunes on the musical form (song form) and that I can save my own polyrhythm assignments. THX for a bunch of great videos that have really helped me.

I was walking around near a park in the town where I live and I heard what sounded like a live jazz group. There was a sax player soloing but since I'm a guitar player I noticed there was a cool guitar player also. So I walked over to the place where the music was coming from and it was just a sax player playing by himself! He had a small amp and was playing to backing tracks coming from it. When he was finished with his tune I asked him if he made his own backing tracks. Then he showed me the I-real app on his smart phone. I asked him where he was "storing" or saving the tracks cause normally you save your tracks on some device like a laptop to take with you. But there was no device plugged into the amp. He told me he was shooting the tracks out from his phone to the amp over a Blue Tooth connection - how cool is that! That way you're not stuck listening to the backing tracks on your phone which has really lo-fi sound. I got the app and I use it all the time for practice.

Very cool! Thanks for telling us about it. You're like a fountain of cool musical info, and your enthusiasm, is at the very least, kind of contagious. (which is good for people that are trying to learn music) You really do have a good way of presenting the things you have in your videos It helps that you don't go over things super fast, and also, repeating, and/or 'backtracking', to make sure, is helpful, because it's better (for me, anyway) than having to 'rewind' the video, which I've done often with other music theory videos, anyway, thanks,..great work!

Aimee, yes the apps are cool but you're cool too. I'm new to playing music (sax) and I can't sing at all. Hearing you kinda scat along with the rhythms was cool and I found myself smiling. I see how the apps can help me formalize musical thoughts and then express the rhythms inside my head. I've already got the drum genius app. I'll be adding iRealPro and Genius Jamtracks. I can use these apps even when I can't play my horn. These apps will help me learn chords, progressions, styles, etc. If I starting singing its your fault lol. Thanks for the video.

A really great rhythm section app would allow a bass player, piano player, or drummer to play the rhythm and tempo, then bring in electronic soloists and ensembles in tempo and tune on top. With existing apps we can generally tune out our rhythm instrument to practice setting rhythms with the others, but we can't practice pulling the ensemble along, correcting their tempo, leading their key changes, setting them up for their solos, etc. The rhythm section spends a bunch of time building the roadway, but the ensemble and soloists often insist on driving in the gutter or the sidewalk.
Another app idea: A counting click-track for the ensemble so they know when to show up. Just sayin' ;-)

Aimee, love your videos with lots of great ideas for self teaching. I just bought this app (2021) having just seen your video about it. I must say I was very disappointed with it. Not withstanding lots of incorrect chord progressions, it also makes mistakes all over the place. Not a chart goes by where chords on the chart are just wrong…playing major sevenths when dom7 are ON THE CHART. For example the chart of “but not for me” has simplified but more or less correct changes but it hits a tonic chord on the second “A” every time despite the written change being correct. Very frustrating…especially because of the app’s potential for awesomeness.

In the old days, I use to just keep rewinding my walkman cassette player, trying to figure out what my keyboard heroes were doing, but this thing is way beyond me. Well, it does not have nearly the same amount of features as this app your using. I just liked the idea of being able to slow down those lightning fast licks I love. I would have never figured out those lines McCoy was doing on Resolution without it. It was just too dang fast. My little walkman's batteries would have died by then. But looks like this app is all that and more so, cool.

I'm sure it's my problem but, so far, I don't see the value of this. Maybe I will learn enough to make this relevant but I don't understand this, so far. Mixing rhythms doesn't sound very appealing. I can see how you might change rhythms as you move to various sections but I would not imagine that would be too common during improvising and comping. With DrumGenius I have a very nice way to practice playing with other musicians and staying on tempo. That's what it does for me. I have a tendency to RUSH, especially when I play difficult changes. Sidemen get upset but DrumGenius just let's me try again.

You're not a nerd! think it's cool too. Oh wait, does that make me a nerd too? A music nerd perhaps 🤓. As a drummer I could see jamming along to this but, but I'll likely share more with all my jazz horn playing friends. Actually it would really be good ear training for me to hear the changes as well. Rhythmically of course also good training.

Oh, and on a side-note, I am extremely lucky enough to get perform along with my community big band with Eric Marienthal in October 2017 (speaking of Chick Corea Electric Band). Very excited! I guess I should get this app fir extra practice with my polyrhythms!

Grabbed GJT after your review 5 yrs ago. They changed format later - became more like iRealPro - in particular it is not possible (as far as I know) to impose different feel on different part of the song. Still the backu tracks are good.

Are you into prog-rock as well? These bands use a lot of feel and time signature changes. Like "Los Endos" by Genesis, for example

2017.... maybe it's on Android by now.... I guess apps like this are replacing the old Jamey Aebersold book and CD method of learning to improvise. It's a shame there isn't an Aebersold app where you could subscribe for like 10 bucks a month and have access to all the play-a-longs and lead sheets.
