  • I know it's been a while, and there are reasons for that. But I'm back, and hopefully to stay. I definitely won't be able to upload every day, but I'm hoping to be able to upload twice a week. Thank you all for your patience and support! Btw I'm working on getting a better microphone, so stay tuned for that. It won't always sound this bad.
UA-cam made me trim out Greg Maddux at number 6.

I agree with the closer thing....Maddux, wasn't really a money pitcher....11-14, slightly higher E.R.A.....one WS, with all those Braves teams of the 90's....I'll pass on Maddux as my go to guy in a big game.....Nolan Ryan, I'll also pass on for the big game.....I'll go with Schilling, Pedro, Johnson, Seaver....Maddux, would make my top 100 pitchers, and be between 90-100!!

Here is my top 14 so I will include another member of the top ten. And I will put in where I put other members whose membership in the top ten is inexcusable.
      PEAK-5 ROTC GOAT
      SCORE
      1. Walter Johnson 395 388 783
      2. Lefty Grove 379 392 771
      3. Roger Clemens 368 395 763
      4. Randy Johnson 381 378 759
      5. Cy Young 371 384 755
      6. Pedro Martinez 380 371 751
      7. Pete Alexander 377 372 749
      8. Tom Seaver 350 376 726
      9. Kid Nichols 340 383 723
      10. Greg Maddux 367 351 718
      11. Christy Mathewson 366 346 712
      12. Curt Schilling 349 361 710
      13. Clayton Kershaw 344 349 693
      14. Bob Gibson 362 322 684
      65. Sandy Koufax 355 125 480
      66. Ron Guidry 250 229 479
      66. Mark Buehrle 155 324 479
      68. Eddie Cicotte 276 202 478
      69. Noodles Hahn 312 165 477
      70. Nolan Ryan 163 313 476
Now even here there are a couple older guys, but Young and Nichols were the first "modern pitchers." And their entire careers are in context The rating for peak is based on a long formula for the five years. Notice Koufax's peak is rated very high and Ryan's very low by these standard and then vice-versa.. Nolan Koufax would have been about 15th and filled the next spot.
Also, I am not a purist. I do not simply count only innings pitched as a starter, but I would not put a pure reliever in the top ten. It suffices to say that Mariano Rivera was the greatest relief pitcher in MLB history and thus the GOAT of that herd.

Agreed, Lefty, like many of his era threw over 300 innings a couple times, led the league in innings pitched 5 times, played for sh!t phillies teams his first few years after his trade from Cards, won over 300 games, could hit, field, and finish the game.....Dave Parker, would shake in his cleats knowing Lefty's slider was coming....oh, and I think he won 4 Cy awards?? In 72, he won 27 games out of the phillies 59 wins.....that's incredible, actually....and completed 30 games, yes, completed 30 games....nowadays, if the superstar pitcher makes it to 200 IP, it's lauded as something special......phew......

Exactly, this is a decent list with a couple horrible flaws. Grove is the worst omission.. Most serious: experts always the Grove very high, but that is people who know what the are doing. He had nine ERA titles and nine ERA+ titles as well as 300 wins and he is the only pitcher in modern history post 1920) to have two five year peaks above a 40 WAR (1929-33 and 1935-1939. The 12 pitchers who had WARS over 40 for five years since 1920 besides Grove are Bob Feller (1939-47), Hal Newhouser (1944-48), Robin Roberts (1950-54, Sandy Koufax (1962-66), Bob Gibson (1968-72), Tom Seaver (1971-75), Phil lNiekro (1974-78), Roger Clemens (1986-90), Greg Maddux (1992-1996, Pedro Martinez (1992-96). Randy Johnson (1998-2002)
Oh Nolan Ryan's best five year peak between 1973-77 was 27.5, was 60th best of the post 1920 era. By these standards Ryan is a joke. He belongs in the HOF for his unique accomplishments but he is no more the G.O.A.T than I am.
And Satchel Paige was amazing, In 474 innings in the MLB he had a 10.2 WAR and showed dominance when he helpedthe Cleveland Indians win the 1948 World Series. He MLB career spanned 42-47 with and exhibition when he was 59. He is most deserving .

@@thebaseballcenter Satchel Paige is a sentimental pick for obvious reasons. He makes no ones' list except for the PC crowd. He won, according to unreliable stats, 124 games, and his 162 average W/L record is just that, average......judge him on his merit, not by the color of his skin, and anecdotal stories...he was dominant to the point of having a losing record at the MLB level 28-31....so the "great take Satchel Paige is a legend" is just that, a legend!

IN his first two staarts with the 1948 cleveland Kindians he shut out the Chcago White Sox twice. You are right about the terrible record keeping in the NeL, But it was not his fault, nd it was not his fault that major league teams and moronic executives like Judge Ladis kep the NeL players like Paige out. Should probably have done a once over through some historical list to make sure you didn't forget someone, like I don't know...Greg Maddux! When I got through the first half I wasn't surprised you hadn't listed him yet because he's much better than that and thought for sure he would be #1. It's pretty crazy not to have what many, many people considered the greatest ever. If anyone thinks Cy Young is the best ever they clearly have holes in their baseball knowledge. The guy pitched in an era where most of the batters he was facing had other jobs and it was much, much easier back when he played. He had a lot of wins but he also had a shitload of losses. Just because the award for best pitcher each year is named after him doesn't mean he is the best ever, it just means he was really good as one of the best known earliest pitchers.

    • @tedsilversyeager840
      @tedsilversyeager840 7 місяців тому

I agree, I guess this guy just thought he had to, because the award is named after him, it was also the dead ball era, balls, were beat to death, and kept in the game, hitters were hitting sponge balls, same with Walter Johnson....he's guessing at his greatness....maybe, have a list of best deadball era pitchers, vs. a more modern list of pitchers.....Lefty Carlton wasn't too bad either....

Whatever way you did this list it definitely is not the best way to do it. I am just going to use one stat for all ten of these guys to show Lefty Grove is better than all but one
Grove versus Gibson: Grove had nine ERA titles to Gibson's one. Grove had a 113.3 bWAR in 3940.2 innings; Gibson had 81.7 in 3884 innings.
Grove versus Seaver: Grove led the league in ERA nine times to Seaver's three. In 842 more innings than Grove Seaver had a 7.2 lower bWAR and he had a 1.27 ERA+ to Grove's 148. Also I have Seaver number eight (8) on my list, but no match for Grove.
Grove versus Pedro Martinez: Grove won nine ERA titles to Martinez five they happen to have both pitched 2827 innings, Martinez in his career Grove in 11 seasons from 1928-39 (excluding a sore arm in 1934 Here is comparison for the 2827 innings:

Grove versus Randy Johnson: Grove had a 9.8 advantage o WAR over Johnson 113.3 to 103.5 in 195 fewer innings. This is a list of the top 20pitchers all time on Black Ink (finishing first in the league) in the crucial categories of Wins, Winning Percentage, ERA, ERA+ Strikeouts, Strikeouts per game (SPG) (FIP (fielding independent pitching) WHIP, SO/Walk ratio and WAR for pitchers; Here is the list.

    Cy Young 5 2 2 2 2 0 7 7 11 6 44
    Pete Alexander 6 1 5 4 6 2 4 5 3 6 42
    Pedro Martinez 1 3 5 5 3 5 5 6 4 3 40
    Sandy Koufax 3 2 5 2 4 6 6 4 3 2 37
    Tom Seaver 3 1 3 3 5 6 4 3 3 3 34
    Rube Waddell 1 1 2 3 6 8 5 1 1 3 31
    Nolan Ryan 0 0 2 2 11 12 1 2 1 0 31
    Clayton Kershaw 3 1 5 4 3 2 2 4 2 3 29

    Bob Feller 6 1 1 0 7 5 1 2 1 3 27
    Warren Spahn 8 1 3 2 4 0 1 4 0 1 24
Now Randy Johnson i a first rate HOFer and deserving to be higher on the list, but not as
    high as Grove
Grove versus Koufax: Koufax had a 53.1 WAR for his career in 2324.1 innings; Grove had 53.1 for WAR in 1683.2 innings from 1928-33. For the rest of his career Grove had 60.2 WAR in 2257 innings. And Grove had almost twice the Black Ink as Koufax and a 148 ERA+ to Koufax's 131.
Walter Johnson should probably be number one and Lefty Grove number two.
Mariano is a releif pitcher an there are probably four or five guys on this list of ten that would have been better reliever than Rivera, though hs is the relief GOAT
Nolan Ryan on a top ten list is a joke.
Cy Young was a great pitcher an deservs to be in the top ten, but the first great pitchers in baseball history was Kid Nichols; Cy Young was better but came a year or so later.
