I love Lee's artwork on The Collection covers, but have to say his portrait of Bill Hartnell seems a bit off to me. That said it's my only criticism, and I can't wait for this release. Bill was my Doctor, and grandfather figure. We kept in touch, and I continued to receive Christmas and birthday cards from his wife Heather after he passed away.

@@jarnopp Do you know it could be? Ian and Barbara really shine in this, and it's left to Vicky to look after the Doctor. I always get insanely excited when these collectors editions come out, they are things of beauty to own in themselves, the artwork for this one looks fantastic. Planet of Giants is a good story, I think it was actually made as a four partner but edited and put out as a three episodes. My favourite story of Season 2 is the Time Meddler, a real classic with a great character in the Meddling Monk. Really looking forward to the documentary about David Whitaker, and the interview with William Russell. Convention footage sounds interesting also. It's great that Sixties Who gets the Blu Ray treatment, and only two episodes missing out of a possible 39, what a great Season to enjoy.
Wow, thanks Glenn - I never knew that, about Planet Of Giants! Must look into that more. And thanks for sharing your views on your fave serials and special features! Good point too that we do have 37 out of 39 songs. That ain't bad, as Meat Loaf almost sang. :)
Yeah, the original intended episode 3 and 4 were on the DVD special features, they made a reconstruction of what episode 3 and 4 would have been like if it was made as it was originally intended, both episodes are 25 minutes lomg, using telesnaps, and new audio with new voice actors standing in for the deceased actors, the rest is made up using the already existing scenes from the episode 3 I wonder if the episode 3 and 4 reconstruction will be included in the bluray collection
I'm very happy that we will finally get to see, some of the best Hartnell stories, remastered for Blu ray. Especially the stories the Dalek Invasion Of Earth, The Recue, The Chase ( featuring Peter Purves debut in Who ) and The Time Meddler.
Sadly I missed basically every season other than season 19 so that kinda killed my want to get them, but Hartnell is my favorite Doctor so I HAVE to get this one
Hey Jason, hope you are ok, sending you and your family best wishes. As for this set, I was expecting a 5th Doctor set but so excited for this release. Also love that image of the Dalek rising from the Thames, so damn cool.
Wow! Wow! Wow! First black-and-white season, here we go. It made sense since this is the most complete season with some of The Crusades missing. The artwork looks really good with both human and alien villains. So crucial for DW with the first companion to say goodbye in The Dalek Invasion of Earth and the over-ambitious Web Planet. I think villains from the same story have happened before. The Rani and Master in season 22 (Mark of the Rani) and the Caretaker and Cleaner Robot in season 24 (Paradise Towers)
Fantastic video as always. Wow, S2 is fabulous isn’t it? There’s so much of it and it’s so varied. I’ll cop out and say I’m looking forward to all of it. Oh, and the picture of Hartnell is a composite based on the photo of him in The Crusade where he’s holding some fabrics and looking mischievous. Thank you muchly, Harry! And yes, it was only while making this video that I properly clocked how much good stuff is in S2. I'm a bit vague about what's in each season during the b&w era...
No. We should not be excited for this. These blu rays should be definitive collections and what we are getting is shitty telesnaps for two episodes. That is complete trash. We have seen what the bbc considers acceptable for reconstructions on the underwater menace. They should push back these releases until they find funding to complete lost episodes. Now bbc will consider this crap fine and we are going to get season 3 just like this. Shitty reconstructions for the majority of the season. No fan should be excited for this as it sets a very bad precedent.
I wonder how much of an upgrade these might be from the DVDs and if they re-did the VidFire process. Nothing revelatory in the preview, but I’d be curious if these are just the DVD “masters” upscaled. My fantasy for these 60s releases besides animating any stories not done before was to include colorized versions. I know this is probably way too cost prohibitive and as essentially a purist I’d maintain that they’d be unnecessary. But dang, some of the amateur colorizations I’ve seen on UA-cam look so freakin' cool! I just hope it’s done one day. Also…and this may be nutty…I’d like to see true HD transfers of the telecines without the VidFire treatment. Scratches and all. So excited to have a black and white season. I think the story I’m most looking forward to is The Crusade. Don’t remember it very much cause I just watched the two surviving episodes randomly. I'm just happy to be getting a Hartnell season on blu-ray. I have all the UK DVDs but really enjoy getting these UK collection sets. Gotta wait for the shipping times since I'm in the states, but I love these sets. I'm excited to see invasion on blu-ray
First off, I hope all is well with your family member. It’s awesome to see the classic Who getting this much deserved treatment. The set looks great and I always love behind the scene documentaries
Hi Jason, yeah really looking forward to this release. The chap on the cover from the space museum is Ivor Salter, he played the Morok Commander and interestingly was also in season 3 story the Myth Makers. He reappeared years later in another season in Black Orchid.
Firstly, I hope your family member is okay. As for this set, what a line up! Story wise, I'd say Dalek Invasion is my favourite BUT episode wise I'd plump for Part One of The Space Museum - it's so mysterious, creepy and trippy. Re: new effects, Dalek Invasion will import the new ones they did for the DVD. As for the cover, are we sure that's the First Doctor? It could be the (spoilers) Dalek duplicate... after all, it is indistinguishable from the original. 😉
Thanks for your well wishes, BD. And ahhhh yes, I'd forgotten about the new Dalek Invasion effects! Ah yes, I did have quite good memories of that opening Space Museum episode.
Top stuff, I kind of thought season 2 would be the first b/w cause it is mostly there. But damn they had better animate the missing two episodes of The Crusade!!! We will not be happy with snapshot only recreation :P I really cannot decide what episode I like the most? I think The Chase, but also invasion also loved museum and the medler? Giants is an amazing visual style for the time? plus... nope cannot pick one LOL
My poor mother who has to post this to Australia - this box-set is huge! I used to have some of these on VHS, sadly I sold them all at car-boot sale years ago. Currently don't own any season 2 episodes, so can't wait to add this to my blu ray collection. I don't mind that we've got a telesnap for the Crusade, hopefully in the future they'll get round to animating it. Fun fact, Julian Glover was a teacher at the drama school I went to, as was Jeremy Young (Kal from An Unearthly Child), Mary Morris (Kinda), Leon Eagles (Jabel from The Face of Evil) and Martin Friend who played Stygron in The Android Invasion, it was like being at a Doctor Who convention every day. Got to say, The Time Meddler is definitely my favourite on this set, it still holds up really well.
Same here. I feel like I know Uncle Terrance through his many appearances in conventions, documentaries etc, and I've read Bob Holmes's biography many times, but I know relatively little about Whitaker... other than that, alongside Dicks and Holmes, he was arguably the finest script editor we had in the Classic Era.
I'm looking forward to the box set and I think I would only get the black and white series because I love them for me it's doctor who at it best, plus my favourite first doctor story is the time meddler.
Thank you for the video Jason! I too was shocked that an early season has been announced. I have mine on order for Reg A. I'm looking forward to The Romans. I love the historicals.
i did not think we whould get any of seasons 1 to 6 in these so this was a nice surprise i just wish they had animated the missing episodes from the storys that had them for the set that whould of been a nice extra for our first 60's doctor who release
Hi there Roslyn! Yes, I think most assumed that, at the very least, these early seasons would be left till last in the series. How thrilling! What is your own favourite serial in this season?
Brilliant news….can hardly wait. Restored picture looks great, loved the trailer. I am sure that Series one will be released next year. I particularly love the Chase - I expect Beatles clips will still be in it. I like all these stories
Great video Jason..have been checking regularly to see when your video would 'drop'. There were lots of rumours about Season 2 being first b/w season to be released so not a huge surprise but still SUPER excited.David Whitaker doco looks amazing. Arguably the best writer in 60's Who. Cannot wait to see what picture quality is like..pristine I imagine..favourite story The Crusade..it is some serious drama with a cracking script and the acting from guest cast is incredible. The acting between Jean Marsh and Julian Glover is dynamite. Hopefully released this year (going by number in previous years it will be 2,3,2,3). A nice Xmas present for myself🤞
Aww, thanks Heath - it's nice to think of someone looking out for a video of mine. :) Great to hear your fave serial too, and it will encourage me to revisit The Crusade.
Yes! The Chase is my favorite season two story, it is great fun. I also love the Mecaniods. Or as some of my friends call them Mecalloyds. I'm still hoping to see the Beatles, but I'm not holding up much hope due to production rights. Cheers! Lloyd two pints of lager and a packet of crisps please Bradshaw..(-:
Absolutely stunned at this news. I agree with you, the Chase is my favourite too. You mentioned the special effects, The Dalek Invasion of Earth had new cgi effects on its DVD release. It looks like they've included those.
Hello Jason glad you did this video. For me seeing this stories again is a bonus I enjoy them all. Behind the sofa and the interviews for me. Also my favourite in this season is The space museum followed very close by the time meddler. Great video as always so much in this set. 9 discs 9 stories 37 episodes is great. This is one I’ve been looking forward to for sure 😀
The photo of Hartnell as the Doctor is from The Crusade (slightly altered so his eyes are looking at the viewer). The "guy with the gun" is the Morok Commander from The Space Museum. I'm really looking forward to seeing how nice, sharp and clean The Dalek Invasion of Earth is going to look (especially episode 5!), also improved clean-up of The Crusade and Time Meddler episodes that were in very rough shape. Also seeing if there will be 2 versions of The Chase: 1) with the original issues as broadcast and 2) with the fixes they did for the DVD release (and maybe even more fixes/improvements...)
@@jarnopp The biggest complaint by the purists was a shot where a Dalek was filmed during the day but meant to be regraded for a nighttime shot... The Restoration Team corrected it to look like night like it was meant to. To quote Hitchhiker's: "This had made many people very angry and has been widely regarded as a bad move.'" There was also a missing bell toll and a clock that was superimposed over a Dalek moving past it that I believe were corrected. And lots of visible wires, especially in the "fun house", accidentally repeated dialogue, and even the legs of a prop handler at one point... Some were corrected, others would take more work.
I have to say I love the collection range but I'm just not that excited for this release and i don't really know why but I'm not a fan of the artwork this time round maybe it's that that's bugging me
@@jarnopp I’m gunnu fly from left field and say Planet of giants! The concept and what they try and do with the sets and effects is ahead of its time for the era. I love them going through a lawn like it’s a jungle really goood stuff underrated
Hi Jason, I'm so happy we have season 2, I didn't think that would be so early in the collection, I really thought it was going to be season 20 Peter Davidson. Its also nice to see 3 early companions on behind the sofa. I think the price is a little more bur so worth with the amount of stories. My favourite stories are both Daleks stories, Invasion & Chase. Thanks for the video Jason and hope your family are well.
Yes indeed Mark - we'd all heard rumours of S2, but I just kinda assumed that it was unlikely for a while yet. So... yeah, wow! What's your fave S2 serial?
I feel some people would probably laugh at me, but I've been wanting to go back and watch the classic DW episodes, but do you think i should just watch them on brit box or wait until the complete collection is complete and buy them?
Nobody would be laughing at you for wanting to watch classic Who in the best possible way. 😊 I'd say that if you just want to see the serials then Britbox will be just fine. If you love special features, though, and are interested in the best picture quality, and can afford a box set, then you'll also have a blast with The Collection! But there is no one way you be watching Doctor Who. 👊
@@jarnopp awesome thank you very much! 😀🤗 does brit box have the lost media episodes or do they have the animated versions? Or are those completely lost 🤔
@@TheNerdstalgicPodcast You're welcome! Been a while since I had a look at Britbox, but here's a video I made about it at Christmas: ua-cam.com/video/-cIXA6GWoq/v-deo.html Before that, I made three or four other videos too!
I'm a little not happy about this season set because one I have some of the episodes on DVD 2 it's probably not going to have The crusade animated or it might but as an exclusive to the season set if that's is true I be a little pissed because I'm collecting the DVDs of William Hartnell and Patrick troughton. Also big fan of dalek invasion of Earth and the web planet criminally underrated. Planet of the Giants not bad. Here's a good question if you could ask the BBC to anime one of the Lost missing episodes what would you choose you have to pick 3. I choose Marco Polo, underwater menace cuz that needs the two missing episodes animated and the Highlanders.

Hey there Scotty! Glad you ordered yours. I would guess it will be a few months before we hear about another Collection set - and what it will be is anyone's guess at the moment. 😊👊
Great video I am so excited for this set my favourite special features are in conversation with William Russel and the one about the 1960s murchendise and my favourite story is the chase and the time meddler
I was really pleased with this one. I think Season 2 is my favourite Hartnell season. It's so ambitious and has possibly the out and out funniest Doctor Who story in The Romans. I don't enjoy The Chase as much as you, but each time I watch it I hope I will enjoy it more. I love historicals too - straight or pseudo. The Web Planet is great. In terms of extras Looking for David Whittaker and the interviews are high on my list. I think btw the original DVD release of The Dalek Invasion of Earth had new special effects so I'm assuming it'll be an option here. But a great release and so much content. We really are spoiled.
Yes indeed, Tony - such exciting times! And ahhhh yes, thanks for the reminder on those optional Dalek Invasion effects. Will be nice to have those on the set.
Certainly looking forward to it. Annoying that Janet Fielding is on Behind The Sofa AGAIN. So, I'm guessing that she'll be slagging everyone off, and complaining about companion's outfits.

Thank you for your kind wishes. And I'm glad you're buzzed up about this new set and its special features!
And haha, yes, it could WELL be the doctor's Evil Twin 😲😲😄
About time a 60’s season
The black archive book on DIoE book is an interesting read on its developments
Ah thanks - I've never read any of those books I don't think. So they're behind the scenes type affairs?
Love the visuals when you discuss the bbc finding more money! A lovely vortex effect!
Ah, cool, glad you liked that, Barry! 😊👊💪
Hehe - it's a tricky proposition, NS! How about the special features - what is exciting you the most there?
It's the two Daleks stories - The Dalek Invasion of Earth and The Chase. Also The Time Meddler since seeing for the 1st time as BBC2 repeat.
Nice choices, even though you cheated and chose two. 😲😲🤠
Haha, that's wonderful about the Doctor Who con/school! And how happy you'll be when this box set turns up in Oz. Thanks for sharing your fave serial!
Really looking forward to the David Whittaker doc. I feel he's one of the key figures that I don't know enough about.
Yes indeed, John - me too! Should be great.
Yes indeed, guys - I know next to nothing about David Whittaker. Has there ever been a doc about him on the DVDs?
@@jarnopp I just had a shufti, and there's no David Whitaker doc I can find on any of 'em. Looks like this will be a first.
@@ftumschk That's really quite surprising, isn't it!
I'm looking forward to the box set and I think I would only get the black and white series because I love them for me it's doctor who at it best, plus my favourite first doctor story is the time meddler.
Hey there Jason! How brilliant - this box set is tailor-made for you, then, eh? :)
Thank you for the video Jason! I too was shocked that an early season has been announced. I have mine on order for Reg A. I'm looking forward to The Romans. I love the historicals.
You're very welcome as always, John! Glad to hear you're keen on those historical delights! :)
i did not think we whould get any of seasons 1 to 6 in these so this was a nice surprise i just wish they had animated the missing episodes from the storys that had them for the set that whould of been a nice extra for our first 60's doctor who release
Hi there Roslyn! Yes, I think most assumed that, at the very least, these early seasons would be left till last in the series. How thrilling! What is your own favourite serial in this season?
i have two fav serials from this series and they are: the time meddler and the chase! that was another great vid😀
Thanks for sharing your faves - and for the kind words. Glad you're enjoying the channel - please tell a Who/horror-loving friend! :)
👍
My only complaint about the artwork is that the Zarbi isn't right up front, bashing into the artist 😉
An understandable gripe. 🤔🤣
Brilliant news….can hardly wait. Restored picture looks great, loved the trailer. I am sure that Series one will be released next year. I particularly love the Chase - I expect Beatles clips will still be in it.
I like all these stories
Awesome stuff, Paul - glad you're thrilled! 🤠👊
Hooray - great to meet a fellow Chase lover, without Bradley Walsh being involved. :)
Absolutely stunned at this news. I agree with you, the Chase is my favourite too. You mentioned the special effects, The Dalek Invasion of Earth had new cgi effects on its DVD release. It looks like they've included those.
Hooray, a man of taste! Glad to hear you love that crazy serial. And yes indeed - good reminder on those Dalek CG effects!
As far as serials go, The Dalek Invasion of Earth and the web planet are my favorite ones
Very nice choices JT - thanks for sharing!
Awesome, Philip - so glad you're happy! And also nice to meet someone who loves The Space Museum to that extent. :)
Thanks Jay, for the great info! Hmm, I need to remind myself of what The Chase's broadcast issues were. 🤔
I have to say I love the collection range but I'm just not that excited for this release and i don't really know why but I'm not a fan of the artwork this time round maybe it's that that's bugging me
Ahhh, interesting. But how do you feel about Season 2? 🤔
@@jarnopp I like season 2, seen most of the stories on DVD and enjoyed them so I don't know maybe I'll feel differently when it's actually released
Vicki needs to return to Doctor Who
Hehe - that would be interesting!
Super video and great content
Thanks Garry! Much appreciated.
Season 2. is the next doctor who. The. Collection release what cxcites. US. Most
what a surprise ... season 2, I pre-ordered mine .... can't wait! Top video Sir!
Thank you very much, Mark! Glad you've ordered yours. :) What's your fave S2 serial?
@@jarnopp Time Middler is probably the standout
Yes, am looking forward to watching that one again
WOW is all I can say, what do you think it is my boy? A space helmet for a cow! Can’t wait for this
Hehe, glad you're thrilled, Rob! What's your fave S2 serial?
@@jarnopp I’m gunnu fly from left field and say Planet of giants! The concept and what they try and do with the sets and effects is ahead of its time for the era. I love them going through a lawn like it’s a jungle really goood stuff underrated
@@robtheoldmongoose7546 Absolutely! As I say in the video, what mad ambition the team had, eh?
Hi Jason, I'm so happy we have season 2, I didn't think that would be so early in the collection, I really thought it was going to be season 20 Peter Davidson. Its also nice to see 3 early companions on behind the sofa. I think the price is a little more bur so worth with the amount of stories. My favourite stories are both Daleks stories, Invasion & Chase. Thanks for the video Jason and hope your family are well.
Thank you so much, Ray! Very glad you're happy. 👊🤠
S20 will probably be next year for the 60th
@@davidcallinicos1976 It's possible, David - but who knows? Apart from BBC Studios, obviously. 🤠👊
@@jarnopp Indeed S1 & S25 too?
@@davidcallinicos1976 Either of those would be lovely. I'm a big Silver Nemesis fan!
In excited for the whole box set, I love the artwork. I was really surprised with this release, was totally expecting another 4th doctor season.
Yes indeed Mark - we'd all heard rumours of S2, but I just kinda assumed that it was unlikely for a while yet. So... yeah, wow! What's your fave S2 serial?
@@jarnopp wouldn't be surprised if when a new backer is found we'll see more episodes animated.
@@markbelsom3174 If I had more money, I would definitely lay money on that. :)
In retrospect it's amazing how many brilliant stories there were in the second series of Doctor Who.
Indeed, Richard. And so very many stories too! Such a long run.
@@jarnopp I'm especially fond of Planet of Giants, The Web Planet and The Space Museum.
Lovely choices there, Richard!
@@jarnopp awesome thank you 😊 I'll check then out!!
@@TheNerdstalgicPodcast there are some of the older animations on there but not all of the more recent ones
Im in shock it is season 2 As u know Jason I so want 20
Iv pre ordered my sets Im actually looking forward to see a black and white set
do you think we will get 20 next Jason?
when do you think they will announce the next standard edition Jason?
Oh The Web Planet 😭
Hey there Scotty! Glad you ordered yours. I would guess it will be a few months before we hear about another Collection set - and what it will be is anyone's guess at the moment. 😊👊

Followed by planet of Giants or time meddler
Great video I am so excited for this set my favourite special features are in conversation with William Russel and the one about the 1960s murchendise and my favourite story is the chase and the time meddler
Thank you Lewis! And I'm so pleased you're excited about this set. Great story and special features choices too!
Amazingly I have only seen four stories in Season 2 (and I've been a fan for about 40 years!) Crazy.
But I think it's always lovely to have pockets of classic Who tucked away for a rainy day!
I confess I haven't seen a lot of Doctor 1, but a few years ago my brother bought me several Target books and one of them was the Zarbi. A fun read!
Such a gorgeous cover too, from the late Chris Achilleos.
Certainly looking forward to it. Annoying that Janet Fielding is on Behind The Sofa AGAIN. So, I'm guessing that she'll be slagging everyone off, and complaining about companion's outfits.
Ahhh c'mon, but she's a good character. Better than someone with little to say, surely? :)
