Hi! new coach here. Can you explain why it's the 3rd and 1st baseman cutting off on throws home and not the ss and 2nd b?

These situations are for balls that are playable in front of the outfielders and chances are that the middle infielders are deep on the infield trying to make a play on the batted ball. This makes them too close to the outfielder and an unnecessary cut in most cases. The 1st and 3rd basemen can position themselves in the infield grass, behind a rounding baserunner, and potentially catch them off guard if trying to advance on a throw to the plate. It may not seem like it, but it's actually more efficient movement for your players. SS is already heading towards 3B on a ball batted to LF and the 2B is already headed towards 1B on a batted ball to RF. The 1B and 2B do have to cover a lot of ground on a ball batted to CF, but this puts the 1B in front of the mound to cut any balls that may be deflected by the mound itself. I don't think he mentioned it in the video, but your pitcher should be backing up home in these situations.

What if the ball is hit deep? Would there be double cut?

Yes, players would execute a double cut if the ball is hit to a distance where the outfielder + cutoff player can’t make the full throws to the base.
I didn’t cover double cuts in this video just because it’s intended to be a basic overview for beginners and double cuts is more of a next level concept in my opinion. But you’re correct 👍
