GRAN TURISMO 2'S BIGGEST ENIGMA (hint: it's a track)
Вставка
- Опубліковано 9 тра 2024
- After the success of the original Gran Turismo, the sequel expanded on both the cars and the circuits that featured on the previous game. And with the expansion in circuits, came the arrival of some real-world locations, such as Laguna Seca.
But part of the allure of Gran Turismo in general is its array of beautifully crafted fictional circuits, and of course, GT2 delivered a range of new ones to us - building on the classics like High Speed Ring and Trial Mountain.
Tracks like Red Rock Valley and Midfield debuted on GT2 and went on to become fan favourites - despite Red Rock Valley appearing on Gran Turismo 2 and only Gran Turismo 2.
But there were indeed other tracks that debuted on Gran Turismo 2 and were never seen again afterwards. There is another circuit in particular that fits this description - a circuit that has long been forgotten by fans of the series...

Ahh Rome Night. So cool that you made a video talking about it! It's legit one of my all-time favourite GT original tracks, I really fell in love with it after grinding out S-9.
It's such a PD move to design one of their best ever circuits and then use it for almost nothing lol. TBH I do like the idea of it being a pseudo-secret track, it adds a cool mystique to it.
Ditto, and same happened with Complex String for me.
Knowing Polyphony Digital, the underutilization of this track was probably just an oversight by the devs.
Not sure if that would be funny or annoying because the other two rome tracks have been so overused in the game
That´s what you get when you have to release the game half done :(
see also: cote d'azur in GT3, seoul in gt4, laguna seca in gt6
Touché for the "Rome wasn't built in one day" line!
GT2 has so many great circuits that should come back.
Especially Red Rock Valley. That track is a blast to drive. I like Grindelwald, too.
Personally, I feel like if they were brought back now, they would be altered in ways to make them "competitive" in sport mode along with the classics we have in GT7 like Trial Mountain, and Deep Forest Raceway, or completely change the look of the surroundings like with Grand Valley "highway".
I say with confidence GT6 is the last game where they would've 100% faithfully recreated GT2's original circuits before Kaz decided to hell with that
Rome Night is woefully underused. This, Route 11 and Red Rock Valley. It's as aggravating as what they've done to Grand Valley, a favorite of mine.
I'm glad that Special Stage Route 11 reappeared in GT3, though, after its absence in GT2.
@@jamiecinder9412 true, but didn't appear much more, sadly.
I can't believe Red Rock Valley never came back. Pretty much everyone loved it.
Fun fact: the AI literally does not know how to take the last corner in Red Rock Valley in an Escudo without crashing.
@@ShadowOfCicero is there any way to get the Pikes Peak Escudo to appear as an opponent at that track?
It was a shame since Rome Night could of been another racetrack for the Italian Nationals, European League, and for some Italian manufacturers races. I really hope GT2+ and Project: A -Spec would give this trace the opportunity to challenge the players to really watch these blind corners. It’s a bit ironic for me since Asphalt 9 has a Rome area so I wouldn’t mind really learning this track.
I would have loved to see an endurance race on Rome Night. Thinking about it now, the pit lane on Rome Night never gets used haha.
There’s been many a game-exclusive track that deserves to be brought back to life. Green Forest Roadway being one…
aint that just swiss alps in gt3 and 4
@@Samohut556That's Smokey Mountain South.
@@Samohut556 nah that’s Smokey Mountain South.
@@Ironicicle1990Smokey Mountain South later became Swiss Alps, with some changes.
It's like a hybrid of the 2. Like mix and matched some parts
In the Discord server of the A-Spec Mod we will add Formula One cars and a event/championship for them, and the most requested track for it by me and the community is Rome Night.
Now, tho I could be considered a developer of the team (kind of) I don't have a final word of that, so it's not guaranteed; but imagine a grid of open wheelers like the McLaren MP4/13 going full speed through the corners
I though you was media didn't realise they made you dev, congrats!
Tahiti Road is such a beautiful stage, the beach, the palm trees, the blue and clear sky, that stage would looks soo cool in moder hardware
GT2's night tracks has a sort of aesthetic I really like that perfectly capsulates the PS1 era to me
It legitimately pushed the ps1 to its limits with the data limitations they had to work with at the time!!! I have been captivated by gt2's beauty for a long time. It shines
I also love this aesthetic, where the lighting isn't really produced by their light source but by textures positioned in the right place. Also check out the night races from Ridge Racer 4 for the same type of graphics.
Nah, it was built in a day and a night!
Maybe because the track was too difficult for both the players and the A.I, that's why they only used in a license test.
It's a similar case to Complex String Ring, a course intentionally made to be difficult to master, not to do races
I agree with the difficulty, it was my most hated track as a kid, it's way more difficult to master than the other tracks. The first time I played GT2, it took me a month to bronze s-9.
Rome and Seattle's short layouts being completely absent after GT2 was an odd decision to me, especially since GT3 had a problem the lack of short courses (especially for the early-game; Grand Valley East's absence is probably the most notable example).
And on the transition from GT3 to GT4, was a shame to see Rome, SSR11, and SSR5 Wet excluded (especially since the last one apparently had an unfinished version present in the GT4 Prologue Prius build).
It's most likely because Gran Turismo 3 had to meet a tighter deadline than expected. Doing the short variations would mean more would have to be rendered, designed, and programmed since GT3 ran on a different engine than GT2.
Aren't there actually 2 tracks in GT2 not being used?
Rome Night and the "kart/drift" track in Arcade mode
Yeah there's Motorsports Land which you can only drive in Arcade Mode, in Time Attack Mode. But that one's more of a novelty - it's essentially a karting track.
@@MattJ155 Or a perfect Mines Evo V drift track 😈
I literally only drove on Rome-Night 2 times in my entire playthrough, first for the skyline meeting racing-style event, & second for License S-9
How do you know that? Or remember that?
@@NathanWoollaston cause I finished playing it a month or two ago
I'm glad you covered such a particular topic; the 90s were very important for automotive design and perhaps there was much more ability to dare than today; and my country is no exception... Maybe that's why they decided to pay homage to it with this additional setting that we could define as an almost Easter egg.
Almost got me with the Grindelwald shots, but I love the classic car event held there too much to forget LOL. But man do I want a re-imagining of Grindel. I'll even take an AC mod
Grindewald actually exists as a AC mod, i have a sleuth of GT tracks along with Grindel on my ac folder
@@DemonDomain666 like 5 seconds after I commented I downloaded it 🤣
@@StancedVacuum heh, there is a lot more gt tracks for Ac, my fav is Midfield
Honestly with the sheer variety of tracks made in Rome, Polyphony could make a solid update including Rome Circuit with all these variations available. They really should focus more on their original tracks seeing as thats what made Gran Turismo into what it is today.
My guess is Rome-Night's existence is to made up for Monaco Grand Prix and Indianapolis (or lookalike) didn't made it to the final game. Still the issue of layout not as accurate as the real Rome roads bugs me to this day.
What's very strange about this city track it's i think it's the only one in the GT series to take place in a real city but the layout is 100% fictional. All other city track i can remember follow real streets but not Rome Night. The only place that's look like a real one is what's seems to be the Piazza del Popolo (the fast chicane)
This track really needs to return. I remember driving on this track for hours on disc 1
I always hated it when I had to drive here on the One Make Races...
Fun fact, this track also appears on one of the demo replay videos. The featured car is a 1982 Corvette.
Wow, I had completely forgotten this track even existed...
Its a shame some tracks never came back
Or that they got violated for "more compatibility for a competitive setting".
There's no longer fun and passion with track desings, it's all "BuT tHaT's NoT rEaLiStIc". I will never forgive them for what they did to Trial Mountain
@@Ferrari255GTO RIP yeet chicane :(
This track was my favourite track in GT2!
I've long thought there was a short version of Rome Night that was planned but never created (or at least seen outside Polyphony Digital). Look at the blocked off road diverting to the right at 3:49 and how it has guardrails on both sides. Then there's the tarmac and blue-and-white barrier beyond the tire barriers in the hairpin at 4:24. Finally, look at the wireframe model at 5:02; sure looks like there's space set aside for a link road between the start of the backstretch and the hairpin.
Interesting observation. I wonder if a fanmade version could be created?
@@BeAGoodDoga well, unfortunately it's not possible for now, as the file format for tracks hasn't been thoroughly explored.
@@thehwguy4293 well that’s understandable. But I’m sure future fan products could be made when the file format is explored & understood. More circuits could be made, to expand any future fan mods or make new ones from scratch…
Prefer this one over the daytime version
You can drive whole track just by grinding right side at start and hold acceleration button, the car will bounce from wall to wall and go straight
Oh! I almost forgot to mention that Grindelwald was only used in Gran Turismo 2 so as Green Forest Roadway, Tahiti Road was also used only in Gran Turismo 2 and of course Rome Circuit Short, Seattle Circuit North and Rome-Night was only used in Gran Turismo 2. But Special Stage Route 11 was debuted in Gran Turismo 1 but also used in Gran Turismo 3. Some new tracks for Gran Turismo 4 are Opera Paris, New York, Fuji Speedway, Twin Ring Morgeti Full Course, West and East Course, Motorland, Grand Canyon, Ice Arena, Chamonix and so many more new tracks are discovered in Gran Turismo 4. Did you know that Tokyo R246 debuted in Gran Turismo 3 and it’s also used in Gran Turismo 4. Not to mention that newest tracks are added for Gran Turismo 5, Gran Turismo 6, Gran Turismo Sport and Gran Turismo 7 for PlayStation.
Bashing out laps in the 155 on Rome Night was a right of passage. I came to love that track, the blind entries, the elevation and just fast enough to be flowing whilst just tight enough to be technical. It's such a shame it's never been seen again.
This is one of my favorite tracks from my childhood. It gives me a similar feeling to driving on SS Route 11 on GT1. Rome-Night would have made for an INCREDIBLE endurance race for touring cars.
I really liked Rome Night. It was a beautiful, unique, and nicely challenging track.
And criminally underused.
I sure wish it would come back!
That Rome Night challenge was probably the most difficult S-Licence test to Gold in GT2. I kept retrying because Golding all the S Licences awarded the GT-One Race car with the 1998 livery. Of course, I didn't know about the hairpin cut that didn't trigger an automatic test fail.
Grindelwald. That's the one I miss personally.
Also, I feel that gt2 is peak gran tourismo.
this track is so underrated
I remember when I was playing the expert mode of Event Synthesizer with a R33, the 3 first races were in Rome Night, the first was Rome Night (normal), the second was Rome Night (reverser) and the third was Rome Night one more time. The rest of races were Laguna Seca and Tahiti Road, It was the only occasion when I can play on that track 3 times in one championship. Greetings from Mexico c:
That Alfa 155 and Rome Night combo is close to perfection tho. So much fun chasing gold on that one.
I like how you mentioned PD might have thought it unnecessary to have two separate Rome circuits... over footage of a Skyline race! lol
I don't remember gt2 looking this sharp and good!
Love your content😍👍
Ahh Rome circuit. A love hate relationship. It became a track I became so good at simply because it was so hard learning braking and lift points. It’s a unforgiving circuit but once you lock in especially on the 1st long sweeper right corner it’s such a fun track
A perfectly made video. Well done!
Thank you!
Yeah, I really enjoyed the S license test on this track and always found it weird that it basically didn't exist anywhere else in the game. It would have been a great location for an endurance race.
Perfect timing, I've just been replaying GT 2 and the firsttime Rome night came up Iwas like wtf is this?!
Trial Mountain is my favorite, so much, I sometimes even dream of driving my old Subaru Outback beater in it haha.
Watching that Rome night footage reminded me of the night course in Motortoon Grand Prix (2).
My theory of why it's barely used is because the times it was meant to be used was mistakenly overtaken by Rome Circuit. I don't know about anyone else but I felt Rome Circuit overused in Gran Turismo 2 (hell, Rome in general, both the classic and PS3 versions were used way too much). I find it a shame because Rome Night is one of my 25 favourite circuits in Gran Turismo.
Also, why did they even make a new Rome Circuit for 5, anyhow? Time constraints on 5 and 6 or something?
GRINDELWALD
Particularly the middle section, if you look at the track and some of the corners the opposite way around, this course is very similar to Dragon Trail Gardens from GT Sport/7 - the series of corners that progressively get wider, into a mid-speed S into a hairpin, the corners are just in opposite direction. Flip the track and compare
1st sector: Jeddah
2nd sector: Laguna Seca
3rd sector: Adalaide
Rome Night would be very fun in some F1 games. It woluld be fun to see how fast something like a Ferrari F20-4 or Mercedes W11 can take the first sector, and it would be a real rollercoaster ride as well.
GT 2 the best racing game ever made.Every game after it copy or stole something from this game. The vector and red rocks two of my go two things when playing the game.
Well… to me, it was Smokey Mountain North debuted in Gran Turismo 2 and it’s also used in Gran Turismo 3 from PS2. Swiss Alps (Formerly know as Smokey Mountain South) was debuted in Gran Turismo 3 and it’s also used in Gran Turismo 4. Don’t forget Super Speedway was also debuted in Gran Turismo 2 but it was used in Gran Turismo 3 and Gran Turismo 4. So as Apricot Hill Raceway, Laguna Seca Raceway, Complex Springs (Only for Gran Turismo 3) and much more of these tracks for all of Gran Turismo Game Series for PlayStation.
This track is accessible in two player mode and I'm pretty sure in arcade mode too. We raced this a lot
I had no idea about the event synthesizer despite beating all the gt2 races many times, guess I never bothered to get the super license
There's actually one track that's even LESS used than Rome Night in GT2!
And it's not even a new track lol
Autumn Ring Mini is completely unused, and is even blocked from appearing in the randomized races. It's only available in Arcade mode and that's it. Well, that and Motorsports Land, but everyone already know about this one. But i bet not many people noticed ARmini was missing in GT2
I think Rome Night was intended to replace Special Stage Route 11 🤔
as a longtime GT fan and game player, i certainly did not forget about this classic fictional track. one of my all time favorite rome circuit track layouts. i think of it as an arcade mode exclusive track. i think it was used only in the license tests on the simulation mode disc.
Since the tracks were randomized in the One Make Races, there was always a chance you could draw Rome Night or even its reverse version as the event track.
there is one track I was hoping to find through gameplay after the licenses, that one we got in the IA-10 with the GT ONE but as we can see it's only that sector of turns and nothing more, can some tell with track it would be or if it's just created to that test?
If it's the one I'm thinking of, it's called 'Super Fast Corners' and it's based on the Eau Rouge section of Spa. Sadly it's not a full track.
You can find out more about all the licence tests here. :) ua-cam.com/video/PDd0naRfaKk/v-deo.htmlsi=IG3Y2zjtioCFbhZL
I literaly just raced there. Doing a manufacturer event in GT2 😅
I've played Rome-Night a lot, but not calling it. To test my car setups I go through the Event Synthesizer's expert option since it is a championship and will generate me 5 tracks.
My favourite direction is the reversed one. The track feels more clear and natural to handle.
I think Rome-Night wasn't added maybe because the developers already did the events and forgot to include it after preparing the licenses.
I guess they have put most work on tracks and pathfinding, then made licensing by recording themselves and finished the development. Maybe they had a very short time to work on that they even forgot to apply rules to events with different types of cars and their manufacturing date.
About modding, I don't know why Project A-Spec choose to include the Test Course as new event of Endurance. It would be way better if we had a Rome Night 3 Hours race with a pool of mostly italian GT cars.
Going off the Rome-Night theme, one track I didn't had a luck to encounter is Autumn Ring reverse if possible. Would remind me of Gran Turismo 5/6.
Rome at night was banger, one of the best tracks in GT2
Id love polyphony digital to bring back some og tracks to gt7 such as seattle and special stage route 11. Even gt4 city tracks like hong kong and seoul/tokyo r246
LOVE THIS COURSE
I hated Rome Night when I was a kid
3:25 I thought of this as narration for goverment politics in my head xD
"I think i was being a bit conservative on this lap" xD
Probably just an oversight, but I like the idea of not driving on it until you get to the S9 licence. Makes it harder.
3:50 Lift off? If done properly you can do it flat (barely; it's also possible that was just my setup in arcade mode).
Id Love if you got the chance to interview for all of us, Mr Kazunori Yamauchi and ask him about all these facts and secrets , builds , etc ❤ , that would be amazing. By the way , i think Rome night was not as good as other circuits , unlike Seattle and Rome day , Rome night had nothing special , nothing too great to be remembered , i like the track , that section of fast curves , it was nice. But the scenery was a big "mehh" imo 😊
The track is avail on arcade disc right?
first 2 sectors of this track are extremely similar to the part of spa after Pouhon and to around Blanchimont. interesting considering the game has Eau Rouge and Radillion also present in the game lol
This track is fire, one of the best of PD. I hope it came back
I have checked Google Earth, and cannot find this track. Somebody claimed to have, but the dimensions are comedically off
Motorsports Land ✨exists✨
You could get to 98%, be less than an hour from finishing, then suddenly you're presented with a brand new track you've never been on before 🤔
Still playing on PSP.
am i the only one tho think that Matt sounds similar to TyDye RacingGaming?
Why is Rome Night the biggest enigma in Gran Turismo 2?
This track was my copium
i agree
