I am building a home in Washington State, building a conditioned crawl space environment, (no external vents). The new energy code requires an insulated 'envelope scenario' for the home, thus having to insulate the crawl space floor. My point, there is a code that requires a crawl space floor to be insulated. Thank you for the video!

You'd want a firebreak for the foam board just as it's required when it's installed in rim joists. Rockwool comfort board could be used in addition to the foam board.

Great coincidence, I am shopping for a quote for precisely that kind of work.
This probably matters : I am in Canada (Québec), so it gets cold in the winter, but hot and damp in the summer.
No contractor wants to insulate the ceiling of the crawlspace, neither bats nor spray foam. The 3 contractors I spoke to are all pushing me towards spray foam on the ground (3/4" gravel) and walls. Supposedly it can stand the humidity from below, it insulates and acts as a vapour barrier. The crawlspace becomes parts of the "living space" and you can heat it and circulate air the same way as the rest of the house. Supposedly it can stand a reasonable amount of foot traffic so it becomes usable space.
Does that make sense to you? I had never heard of that technique before. Any issues that I should look out for?

I just finished a job a few weeks back where we had so much left over scrap 2" rigid foam that we made a grid that covered about 1/3 of the crawl space floor. Then layed the vapor barrier over. There was a few day before we got the dehumidifier going so we naturally had some condensation on the vapor barrier but only where there was no insulation. The insulation worked as a thermal gap. Knowing what i know now, i will always put rigid foam under my vapor barriers (budget permitted).

Does the foam support your body weight when going into your crawl space? I believe the foam is not 'memory foam' material, so you're putting dents into it when rolling/crawling around on it?

@@soyomofo3162 rigid foam it is very strong as long as its not floating anywhere. And even with some uneven ground it just flexes and returns to form. The only caution i would put out there is pointy objects being on your person. I have had to tape to patch spots from a hammer on my tool belt and rolling over on it. I did a test before installing and spaced 2 by 16" apart and jumped up and down in the middle on the rigid foam and never could get it to break.

There are lots of variables with that situation. A lot of things to consider before locking in on a specific method. But I'm wondering if it would be a better solution to look into exterior insulation on the foundation walls and then dehumidify the crawl space and put a Good vapor barrier down. The dehumidifier would keep the space dry and would actually help the ground to stay warm. Coupled with exterior insulation keeping the whole crawl space environment insulated and warm.

    1. Is it possible to just cement over the crawlspace dirt floor or use pavers with gaps between each for moisture venting? This would work well for a mechanic creeper for crawlspace travel.
    2. Where would the poly sheet go in the above ideas, below or above the cement or pavers?
    3. I have moles coming into my crawl space. Should I bury a non-rusting steel mesh under the crawl space dirt to prevent them from burrowing in? This is why I think the cementing or paver laying would work instead, but don't know which is cheaper for a DIYer. Also mole tunnels could be used by mice and rats for those reading which causes another pest infestation.
    4. Can I replace my vent mesh with a smaller holed screen to keep most bugs (spiders) out of the crawl space and not affect the ventilation oveall?
    5. I have 'no backing' fiberglass for insulation on my subfloor with poly twine falling down. Can I replace the twine with landscape netting or mesh?

Your videos are great and super informative. Thank you! I have a dirt floor basement/crawl space and I have wood plank floorboards (roughly 3/4" x 4") above the joists with no subfloor...so not much between the living space and the damp basement. I was thinking of pulling up the floorboards and putting down a subfloor. Do you recommend putting a sheet of plastic as a vapor barrier ontop of the joists, then subloor, then floorboards? Is there any downside to that? I was going to then insulate between the joists in the crawlspace. My major concern is keeping moisture and smell entering the living space. Of course retaining the heat in the living space is a concern as well. Any thoughts, recommendations?

Having a weird odor only when AC runs. Just encapsulated with closed cell and 8mil vapor barrier. Looks solid work. Does every encapsulated crawl need a dehumidifier? Bought an April 1830

Here is a video we did answering your question: ua-cam.com/video/uT5-Q-md2Mc/v-deo.html You may also want to look into getting your ducts cleaned.

and check for holes in your ducting that runs under the crawl space as well as cleaning
