30 years ago you could gain this kind of knowledge from This Old House, not any longer. Following this build you could learn something about all the trades and how to build a structure like this. Great channel and hard working nice folks.
The planning that this shows is staggering. From framing to electrical, ductwork and vents... to knowing exactly what units you were going to use. Obviously you you never said "we'll figure it out when the time comes." And that's why your results are always stellar.
10 years in hvac and im super impressed. its impractical from a business and sales point but you took that to its fullest. so long as the static pressure is good thats a solid system, much better than you can buy without custom preferences.
This video is so good. Clear, no BS, and you preemptively explained every question that came into my head as I was watching.

Your plenum is actually a standard 20 x 20… Which can be bought at a supply house along with the endcap and the takeoff that you would need on the top

I wish you posted this 2 weeks ago 😂. I am a builder and DIY'er and ran into the exact issue. My good friends are HVAC pro's but are slammed. They at least helped me order what I needed. I figured I would disassemble the old equipment and have them install. Well I was very capable of the removal but when it came to reinstall they still were slammed. So I started with the install. This video is rear and I would have benefited from it greatly. I look forward to watching the next videos. I was fortunate enough to have the ductwork longer than I needed and was able to cut it and fit. I also finally got one of them to rework the two lines back to the new units and charge the system. I had to watch a bunch of videos to get an understanding of each step. Your video so far is exactly what I needed with start to finish.

Should’ve put cross breaks in the plenum…gonna hear a lot of popping probably.
Also, pull that coil and remove the horizontal drain pan. Install will say to, in order to get maximum efficiency. With a TXV present, I’m assuming that’s the goal.

I'm a builder of over 30 years and skilled tradesmen specialize in HVAC, plumbing, electrical etc .projects like this should be left to pros because if you don't have correct ductwork and furnace combo you can cause big problems !

Thanks, nice video. Did my own furnace install many years back. If I had known about the adjustable plenum that would have saved me a bunch. The sheet metal shop screwed up so I had to modify anyway. I had seen the S cleats (didn't use them) but never knew how they worked. Are you going to do your own refrigeration evacuation and charging?

What will you do about mold accumulation in your duct work. Had some work done and the man found mold on noise batting. He said there was something to combat this but I get confused when I try to research this subject. Please help this old man.

Iam doing a reno on my home iam at the point of the a/c system....I have the rheem units can some tell me where can I get the box that come off the supply and return.....iam in Cincinnati ohio.....or the air duck parts to build the supply and return like he did...and a great job that you can learn a lot from this channel

Nice install Paul, very informative. But had some questions 1. What size units did you go with? 2. Why no filter in return air?

Me three. Recently did my own HVAC, added Media Cabinet and UV to the return plenum. Media came with MERV 11 but I upgraded to MERV 13 but I went with the largest Media Cabinet I could get my hands on to help cut down on the pressure drop.
Is air from the blower supposed to be blowing out from the base of the cabinet into the room?
How did you seal the back of the return air duct? It appears that you left a gap?

I bought a duplex and it has radiators so I’m thinking about the most efficient and economic way of transitioning. Can I install a full system without necessarily hooking up the furnace and then at some point hook it up but yet have the AC fully working ?
You should build a platform underneath the furnace and sit the furnace at the top instead of messing up with the furnace cabinet
As usual another great video! Is there anything you don't know how to do!!! Lol. Paul, I was wondering if you could comment on the design of the HVAC system. How did you calculate the size unit you needed for the size of your building, and how did you design the duct work system? I have seen a lot of videos showing these Cadillac units that cost 7% of your budget not including a design service. That is simply out of reach for the average homeowner wanting to build a Bardo. Was wondering what your thoughts on this are?
Love the work it is just very unfortunate that there will be a great amount of air lose in the return line and the plenum because it appears that nothing got air sealed.
Isnt the air filter usually on the return air or u have a different system for that?
Places do hvac differently, most people in the south just use a filter grill. Lots of northern people like 4” filters at the unit.

Way overkill, just wrap the duct with 3” insulation and we would be done. At least in my area codes are different state to state.

His filter rack is built into that 90 he attached to the side of the furnace.

Is there a particular reason you chose a traditional HVAC system instead of a Mini Split system?
Upfront cost I’m sure, plus the unknown of repairs and reliability. But reliability went out the window when he bought a Goodman system.

I'm surprised you've gone with a furnace, I thought a ground source heat pump would be much cheaper given the space and land you have?
Geo is nice but the upfront cost is huge compared to central furnace/ac or heat pump.
Am planning 40x40 post frame house with horizontal loop geo in SW MN. It is indeed more expensive.

Well real real quick you installed a horizontal evaporator coil vertically. It’s gonna drain strain down. Am I wrong?
You are definitely not wrong and it is going to leak everywhere unless he changed the install and removed the side evap pan and installed a different coil. The whole build is totally wrong from start to finishing. From ducting, return air, furnace size, wrong AC coil, no dehumidifier etc. If we learned anything, this is one way not to do things. Plus you can literally buy 20 x 20 ducting and should be sealing with mastic, silicon, foil tape and possibly internally sealing the ducts from Aeroseal. The return air is way undersized based on the space and size of the unit shown. He plans to go straight up with PVC ducting in an HE furnace out the roof? It needs to be angled 1/4" per foot horizontally. Where is the condensate pump and drain going? And I see no air filtration system or ventilator like an HRV or ERV. Manual J, D and S would be needed at a minimum but Manual T and P would be helpful also for best air flow and conditioned space.
@@Balticblue93 That coil he used has a drain pan underneath, rewind the video and look at the door. Also how do you know what size his furnace is? If you don't know the coil had a drain pan under it, how do you know sizing? As an actual HVAC tech looking at his video, he cut that unit's return open to be roughly 16x24 (a gas furnace is 28-29" deep depending on the door profile) It has 4 burners and it's 21" wide. Makes me think it's an 80k btu 4 ton which running a 10x24 inch return is perfectly fine. For a HE furnace it's a preferred method to go out the roof, water drains back to the inducer easier and there are less restrictions. His filter rack is built into that 90 he installed, you can see the hinges on the door. HRV's and ERV are options, not neeeded at all but are nice if you want to pay extra.
You bringing up energy loss/ductsize/airflow charts makes me think your a sales guy who has no idea what he's actually talking about.

My suggestion, buy a couple replacements of that computer board. In 10-15 years when it breaks down for no reason at all, you wont be able to buy that board or it will be ridiculously overpriced. I have furnaces from the 80s all the way until now. The 80s furnace runs perfectly, not a problem. The new high efficiency(computer controlled) models, break down without warning and at the best time... winter blizzard days.

Coil needs to face front of furnace, kills airflow
Am i the only one who doesn't understand how this unit is going to catch the condensation? It looks like he used a horizontal flow coil? The condensate pan is vertical and will not catch anything so in theory all the condensation will fall right on the heat exchanger and blower? Please correct me if im wrong i just cant see it any other way

I've thought it, but never said anything. Why did you ever go into police work with the skills you have? I grew up in everything construction and am as OCD as they come. I mainly do masonry work and I will saw a brick where others will chip or break them with a hammer and they aren't wrong. lol You could work on anything I have!
I know your a dabbler in this part of the trades but your making me cringe bro, you had all the tools to do S cleats AND drives to extend your plenum. Watching you struggle lifting and setting the cased coil was panful as well, next time take the coil out of the box, it slides in and out easier than it was trying to heave it all together. I would have run the return all the way down first in one piece assembled prior with S and D, connected it to the take off. then positioned the furnace in place, its like tiling in the corner of a room and working out and it enables you to tape your seams. I would cross broke the plenum too, there are two tools that I would get if your going to do this work regularly, a duct stretcher and a Hensler Bender. You can also make your own seams without the use of a Pittsburg machine, just with bar folders. Also, where's your filter rack?
As an owner of a HVAC company the fact that this guy is attempting to do this is disturbing. He doesn't have a clue what he is doing. He could have had the ductwork spray foamed and it would have been insulated and sealed in one shot. There will be serious condensation issues with the way he attempted to insulate the duct. And good luck when you have a problem, because he has no warranty.

@@smithbrothers125 Yeah yeah if all potential customers installed their own units instead, you wouldn't make any money, we get it.
Its hard to not be negative when you work in a field and can notice little things that bother you, but there is no major flaw in his work. Its funny, you can find these same comments on videos of any profession or hobby, people getting all territorial, their way or the highway.
And using the pink insulation slabs isn't a problem if it was sealed correctly. Can't condensate if there is no fresh air moving around it. But personally I'd just use the "reflectives" r6 bubble wrap and call it a day.
@@BeastPepper No major flaws in his work? The entire install is pretty well incorrect from the start. The Manual J, S, D, T and P would pretty much put all that to rest. There is literally item after item that is incorrectly installed or the wrong product being used. Are you kidding me? I would write a book on why and how this install is not properly done. I would love to see some of your designs or installs, if you think this is just "noticing little things." Clearly you need some more training.
@@Balticblue93 I agree that the install was far from perfect but it's on his own house, and he isn't teaching people how to be professional hvac installers, only how HE installed his furnace.
But maybe I need to find a new profession if people in my field are this perfectionist and OCD.
I had a lead that was exactly this way. Cool guy off the job site, but I hated every second of working with him. 6 hour days turned into 12-14 because of his need to rip out and fabricate everything from scratch as some show of his skill. (for the record we were paid per job, not hour)
Oh who am I kidding. Every profession has a cult of ignorant elitists whose only shred of personality is a reflection of their choice of work.

This is really, really bad. There are so many things done wrong here. Stop what you are doing and hire a professional to install good equipment and do it right. The HVAC and plumbing systems are the lifeblood of any building and you are killing it. Stop and think about what you are doing.

Congratulations, you just voided your furnace warranty and your furnace may not function properly. You are not allowed to position your evaporator that is sitting on top of your furnace the way you did. The evaporator coil has to ALWAYS face front and not to the side the way you did. I am not going to educate you, because these projects should only be done by a pro, doesn't matter how busy they are. This is why I hate videos by homeowners or I assume you are a carpenter (by your title) giving wrong advice. Your evaporator coil doesn't put cold air into your house, it absorbs hot air and sends it outside to your condenser, who uses pink board to insulate ductwork in the attic, they sell the proper insulation and which will pass your local codes, your picture with the furnace in the basement and you have round pipe connected to your furnace plenum, you require a PTO and rectangular duct and not round pipe like you have as you will affect your static pressure. I can go on and on, but I will give you advice, HIRE A PRO. Licensed Refrigeration Mechanic/Heating Technician Toronto, Canada and NATE Certified USA.
