The Chess Move that made World History ♔ ASMR ♔ Deep Blue vs Kasparov

- In 1997 the human world champion Garry Kasparov played a 6-game match against the IBM supercomputer Deep Blue (nicknamed Deeper Blue). He won the first game in a breeze, employing a standard strategy at the time exploiting the shortcomings of artificial intelligence. In the second game of the match, something unprecedented happened. This video dives deep into that game and explains why it is the most significant game of chess ever played.
When I refer to the 'opening book' I'm talking about a database of optimal moves found by chess experts and programmed into the machine. Nick De Firmian lead this effort.
Deep Blue was first developed as 'Deep Thought', based on the special purpose chip designed by Feng-hsiung Hsu. Kasparov played a 2-game match against Deep Thought in 1989 and won easily.
After this match IBM invested heavily in the project and by 1996 they were ready to challenge Kasparov again - this time with a huge version of Deep Thought that they had named Deep Blue (a reference to IBMs nickname Big Blue).
Kasparov lost the first game, but won the 6-game match convincingly. He employed a anti-computer strategy that exploited general flaws in AI at the time. By 1997 IBM challenged for a third time with a heavily upgraded Deep Blue and this time they won the match. Kasparov won the first game with his anti-computer strategy and looked to be cruising to another match-win. In game 2 however, Deep Blue played an absolutely fantastic game and won. It did not exhibit any of the usual hallmarks of AI and did not suffer from the flaws that Kasparov had previously exploited. In fact it played so intelligently, laid long-term plans and resisted material temptations that Kasparov was convinced that the Deep Blue team was cheating by having a human help the computer behind the scenes.
The next 3 games were drawn and it all came down to the 6th and final game, where Deep Blue had white. Kasparov employed an extremely risky opening, that is considered unsound and even losing by grandmasters. The opening requires an early positional sacrifice that no computer had previously been able to find. It therefore came as a shock when Deep Blue instantly played the sacrifice and won the game and thus the match. It was later revealed that Nick de Firmian and the opening book team had installed that particular opening because they were aware that the machine was not able to find the sacrifice itself. Therefore Kasparov lost the 'battle for humanity' against human opening preparation. Most videos you'll find on UA-cam about the match focuses on this last, 6th game. This is misleading. What is interesting is the 2nd game, where Deep Blue showed us that computer intelligence will not remain clumsy and 'artificial looking' and in fact the future was already happening.
Kasparov felt he was being mistreated during the match, with the Deep Blue team making life uncomfortable for him. He no longer believes that they cheated though. Kasparov is now a 'tech optimist' and has written extensively on the subject of artificial intelligence.
___
The Turing test, originally called the imitation game by Alan Turing in 1950, is a test of a machine's ability to exhibit intelligent behaviour equivalent to, or indistinguishable from, that of a human.
When going over game 2 of the 1997 match, it is not possible to determine if a very strong human grandmaster was playing the white pieces or if it was indeed a machine. There were no give-aways. In fact the machine played in a very intelligent and strategical way that seemed to mimick the style of Karpov, Kasparov's old nemesis.
But IBM had of course not hired Karpov to play the computer moves. Instead, what Kasparov was suspecting, was that they had a chess expert (by Kasparov's estimation someone of IM strength would be good enough) sit in a secret room with access to a screen showing Deep Blue's calculations. Whenever Deep Blue would suggest a 'typical computer move' the human assistent would simply press a button to make the computer drop that particular line. Rinse and repeat this process until you find a satisfactory move.
While Kasparov no longer believes that IBM cheated, this idea inspired the ever-rourceful russian to come up with 'Advanced Chess' where humans would team up with computers and play eachother. As Kasparov predicted the combination of chess grandmaster + computer was far superior to both the human and computer on their own.

The level of mind games during this match was absolutely insane. If only Kasparov could have found this channel back in 1997, he would’ve had a more relaxing time.
This is incredibly relaxing, thank you so much for it!
Omg I didn’t know you watch asmr chess! I love you both lol🧡🧡
love you ryan, didn’t know you were into chess haha
thanks man! I'm just getting into your channel now so I can only say; likewise!
This match was sad in many ways. The Deep Blue team were doing all they could to damage Kasparov's preparation. They were given all of his games to analyse but refused to show Kasparov the training games Deep Blue had played with grandmasters. In the end Kasparov made a purposeful blunder thinking that Deep Blue wouldn't see the refutation because computers were materialistic back then, but Deep Blue refuted it and he lost. Garry could have won and saved humanity!
It was IBM that was screwing Garry over, it wasn’t the Deep Blue team. Him losing was really just a matter of time, though. Computers were always going to be better at chess than us, eventually.
@@jcers Same with Go. It was only a matter of time
@@alexanderzippel8809 same with our jobs. It is only a matter of time
@GD Magic Gaming says who? on what timeline?
Ive watched battle bots. I would LOVE to watch a season of AI compete in a thing... see what the literal best of the best can become.
@@georgew5038 you have evidence of this?
I paused and liked as soon as you referred to kasparov as “defending humanity against the machine”, that gave me goosebumps 😆👌
Man, you can really fall into a rabbit hole with the history of this game.
Lol if the pun was intended good job xD
Great reference lol
I watched this at night to fall asleep but then had to watch the whole thing again in the morning to follow the story. I always thought of chess as a technical game but this channel shows how dramatic and even romantic it is. I started learning chess because of this channel.
I'm extremely happy that my content inspired you to learn chess - that is like the best possible outcome for me! :D
This was actually really interesting, I found myself saving this video for the morning so I could actually watch it.
I absolutely cannot overstate how amazing these videos are. Thank you for the awesome quality you give us
You’re a true storyteller; the way you describe these historical games feels no different to being read a bedtime story 😍💤. Thank you as always ❤️.
You’re beautiful
@@TheWeeman007 Thank you! ☺️
@@Tiatabs13 hahah your welcome, we should talk sometime ? 🙂
thank you so much Tia!
@@TheWeeman007 jit is tryna pick someone up in a comment section, under a video about chess💀
YEEES A NEW VID. Btw i love the sideways shots thats a nice touch
I like the whispers you did at 2:50 you should make videos like that if its ok
I think it would be fine bro 😎
thanks for the feedback - I'll see if I can use this more in future videos.
Deep Blue : "I cannot come up with ideas"
Alpha Zero: "Hold my beer"
yes, that is the next chapter of this story and boy... Do you remember when you first saw those A0 games? Beautiful and frightening at the same time.
Stockfish 14.1 "Hold my king"
The ASMR in this video is so good I’ve watched it 4 times and still haven’t seen the end. I fall asleep every time.
Makes my day when I see this channel has uploaded a new video.
It’s always a good day when ASMR Chess uploads
this has got to be one of my favourite videos, great job!!!
Good stuff! I think I speak for many when I say we'd love more immortal games!
Instantly fell in love with this channel.
Lately i've been suffering from pretty severe tinnitus. Your video's are probably one of the only things help me fall asleep. Thank you and please keep going. This video was really high quality and interesting! Good stuff dude
The camera transition to break things up momentarily around 12:55 was a nice touch, great video as always.
dude your most recent content has really been hitting it out of the park. so relaxing and educational. iv been following for years, you're really starting to hit a new level as an ASMR artist.
thank you so much! It makes me very happy that the extra effort is appreciated :)
never been hype for an asmr vid before
I've never played chess and only recently learned the rules of the game, but this story is fascinating to me. Thank you for taking the time to tell this story in such a comprehensive and relaxing manner! A great video for a great story!
Been looking forward to your Deep Blue video! Super excited to get into it, what a cool game.
Another absolute masterpiece of a video my friend. Thank you for your time.
always awesome to see you in the comments man! Glad you enjoyed it!
This is the only ASMR channel I watch where I can't fall asleep. Why? Because I am too enthralled by the chess! What a wonderful channel!
Been away, but must say I really love this video - and watching both boards at the same time. Well done - thank you for another great vid!
This is the REAL top tier ASMR. Been listening to it since it first came to youtube and videos like this are the absolute best there is out there.
Wow, thank you!
That chess match made history. Good work on the videos, really nice
Technological development in Artificial Intelligence is one of if not my favourite topics at the moment. To see such things in the context of chess with the questions regarding the true intelligence of machines was absolutely fantastic.
You elegantly narrate the story in such an alluring manner, it’s heavenly. Thanks for the video!
The perfect time to upload this, just what I needed right now. Thank you very much!
These are always a treat! I really appreciate the quality of the videos! Thank you!
You got +5K subscribers since the last time I saw ur Channel. The quality of ur videos is just awesome, I think by the end of this year u will be close to 100K, just keep it up and u will get it done, awesome stuff
100k by the end of 2021 is my stretch goal actually! I've been dreaming of 100k ever since I started the channel. It is sort of a life goal for me. 6 months ago my channel started popping off a little bit and I made a vow to work hard on the channel throughout 2021 to see if I could make UA-cam a career (my ultimate dream).
I can tell a lot of work went into this video. Well done.
Amazing story telling and an even better game.
Please make more asmr over this chess board. Many many more!!!! It feels really good to see some quality chess before sleep.
More to come!
Very glad to hear you take on this classic match!
I've been watching your channel for years (thank you!) and this... may be my favorite video you've ever done. I love chess, but even more so I have been fascinated with AI and read the book The Age of Spiritual Machines by Ray Kurtzweil. According to Kurzweil, this was one of the defining moments in AI and you have explained that perfectly in this video.
This was an awesome and clean-yet-clogged game.
What a great video! Thanks for all your hard work and research on this! Love your channel!
Look at the quality, look at the description and everything he wrote, some people are just simply amazing.
Yeah I was gonna say even the description is fantastic on this one 👏
thanks for noticing!
I literally light up when I see a new video from you! Time for a good sleep😴
Crazy, I was gonna recommend doing the deep blue games on your next video,, guess my suggestion was answered !!
Got you a shoutout on GingerGM's stream today! He's well aware of your channel, apparently :D Sounds like he's a big fan!
Oh cool! He is AWESOME! Maybe I should try and ask if he wants to play me for a video?
The shots are just amazing!
So interesting how long it takes for a piece to actually by taken, demonstrating that positioning is as important as taking, and that a game can be decided even before starting
Yooo chessAsmr i have one last suggestion can you do when mikhail tal sacrificed two rooks in 1916
Tal was born in 1936 so I think you must be thinking of somebody else. Anderssen sacrificed both rooks (and almost every other piece) in the Immortal Game - maybe that is what you are thinking off? I have a video on it.
@@ASMRChess OMG im an idiot sorry is in 1987
yes. I’ve been waiting for this episode
I like how deep blue is built by grandmasters working for IBM and analysed by them when it is almost similar to the world vs Kasparov but without a computer nonsense.
Woohoo another kasparov❤ please do Bobby fischer next
I would be interested in you doing a video about a game where Alpha Zero slaughtered Stockfish in a Ruy Lopez when it went way off book playing stuff never seen before from either human or machine. Observers during the game thought it had gone bananas if memory serves. It would be fascinating to hear your thoughts on Alpha Zero's play in that game.
Your videos are so good!!!!
Looks like my plans for tonight are cancelled, sorry babe gotta watch this
Thanks for the unintentional birthday present!
Always been one of my favorites. ❤
¡THIS VIDEO IS MARVELOUS, WONDROUS, MAGNIFICENT, AMAZING, GORGEOUS, BEAUTIFUL!
Another wonderful video! I was wondering if you could review one of the games from the world championship between Anand and Carlsen.
Great suggestion!
Fed video, Godt forklaret og meget afslappende 😴
tak min ven!
Did not understand all words because of the low voice, but I noticed that the square names at 27:45 are not correct. (should be Bd5 and Be6)
Thank you for this 🙏🏼
Please become my History Teacher! You’re so good at telling stories!
Does anyone else notice the little whistles in the background?
You just blew my mind.
Interesting. Stockfish really doesn't like Move 26 (pawn to f4) or the follow up Nf6 from Kasparov...
This is possibly related to the fact that after white Qf1, BOTH players miss a sequence exchanging rooks before black pushes his queen to a1 for a check.
It really wants white to push it's king up to h2 to prevent this.
Similar things happening around move 32 (Bc5).
Love the kasparov vids
Why on 5:53 did the queen white move to d to make checkmatr
O sorry I mean e
You are a legend sir
"Defending humanity against the machine..." 🤣🤣🤣
2:28 there are aggressive variations like the Arkhangelsk, and the Jaenisch gambit
Amazing Video
this is sososo good
Uh, I would really love if you do the board sounds a bit loudern(or loader tappingy because the captures are loudn enough)
Hey, what chess board do you use?
Or… since he’s showing a digital board on the screen as well, it might be a DGT board which is VERY expensive. It can automatically generate PGN’s by the played moves on the board
I believe it is a DGT elictronic chess board (USB) bought from chess house. And as yeeeesh mentioned in a previous comment, its pretty expensive. About 700 euros if i remember correctly. ASMRchess was only able to buy it because of his patreons. So if you want/have the means for it, be sure to support him on patreon ;)
@Black Swan55 “on your phone”….
@@Lars_Maassen Thanks man, even though I can't afford the board itself I didn't know about the chess house website, which is really what I was looking for
May 4th 1997? That’s my birthday!
What chess set do you use in your videos?
1:57 it was described earlier too by Damiano and earlier authors
Can you please tell me where you got this board??? I want one badly
21:10 that was more about evaluation that was how it evaluated things the.
2:57 why’d He swap the places can y do that,???
it is called castling. I have a video on it.
I feel good because for the first time ever i saw the queen move to reck house on deep blue sad really garry didnt force the draw
Sounds to me like Kasparov had one idea of what a computer could do, and as soon as it did something else, he declared that there must be a human behind it. Deep Blue didn't really exhibit intelligence, I think, but rather what can be done when a machine is really fast at calculating things.
I also think that the Turing Test should involve the computer convincing more than one person of its humanity, regardless of that person's skill at the thing being tested. Kasparov might have been convinced it was a human, but an AI software developer at an IBM-equivalent company possibly would not.
What qualifies a human to determine that a machine has passed the Turing Test?
At that time Kasparov was able to determine what version of what chess program was playing after looking at 5 of its' games with no other information given. Kasparov invented the .pgn format with the chessbase team and has always been at the forefront of chess AI development because it was an invaluable tool for his chess preparation.
10:30 is my stopping point for tonight, shall resume tomorrow night. 👍
23:00 is tonight’s!
I might me crazy but dosent rook A1 completely stop the draw ? 😅 I must be missing somthing right
The only asmrtist that manages to put me asleep every video. 👍👍
veery intriguing tale
Can someone explain why 7... d5 is bad?
This made me weep.
don't weep for Kasparov :) he is doing very well these days (and has been all his life tbh).
Pls post again🥺
Any chance you could do some Bobby Fisher games?
absolutely. Bobby is one of the absolute giants of chess and his games will appear on the channel at some point without a doubt.
Sometimes I wonder if today's chess elite would beat deep blue.
With neural nets, probably not. Quality of search > quantity of search especially when the difference in quality shears orders of magnitude off of the search tree size.
Opening Theory has evolved a lot since 1997, so if the machine was not updated with a new opening book it would stand at a giant disadvantage. Also humans now have a much better understanding of how to play against a brute force style machine like Deep Blue than Kasparov did back in 97. I'm confident that most top 20 players would win convincingly against a non-updated version of Deep Blue.
31:38 extremely dubious
It was a primitive engine and it blundered , Kasparov blundered back
Did this game have a time limit?
yes they played with classical time controls.
Analyze kasparov vs judit polgar please... , analyze first time magnus shock the world vs garry kasparov
both those games will appear on the channel at some point. I don't know when though.
Happy chess day.
Ya'll should also check out about AlphaGo.
Same concept but with a different game.
AI is already taking over low level jobs like cashiers. Next will come self driving cars taking all the taxi/trucking jobs. Then eventually AI will become better doctors, lawyers etc. I believe eventually AI will become smarter and more capable than humans, and will begin upgrading themselves, at that point humans probably won’t be able to stop it. But as of rn, I’m appreciating the uses. Just waiting on the day Detroit become human is a reality.
Many people laugh at this idea, but I think we are far closer to this than most people think. Particularly self-learning neural networks are scary and fascinating. Look what AlphaZero was able to do. And what most people don’t realize is that the dangers of AI has not been solved AT ALL. A general purpose AI could end us all and nobody has a solution to this.
6:47 well silicon more than steel
Literally i was saying queen to e3 could lead to a draw but i said maybe I'm just too stupid to understand any of this and i was right 😎
Yes, but the question is... could Deep Blue have beaten Bobby Fischer?
