completely underrated Johny Highland, shunned from top 40 radio and main stream media ...and it hasn't hurt him one bit..lol....One of the best today..
if only I had been there to watch and hear this... imagine goin' out for a drink.. enter this bar... and then .... this ...... this would be heaven on earth....
That's basically how I ended up at a Dicky Dale gig. I heard a couple of songs sitting out front hitting the sidewalk beer bar. Asked the tender and bouncer who was covering surf rock. They just looked at each other for a bit, shook their heads and said it was the man himself. I think I got goosebumps and light-headed, then I definitely remember my eyes tearing up. Houston Continental club.
Seen Johnny so many times in the Nashville area, and not only is he a great guitarist/musician he is also a very nice, humble gentleman. So cool and with his vision disability he still plays better then more know so called guitarists! God Bless you Johnny!!!!
I thought I kept my ear pretty close to the ground as far as who's who in guitars. But I missed this guy. Wow! After hearing him do this and Slow Blues, he just shot up to the level of Gary Moore, Eric Clapton and all the other greats.
You may well be right. I used to say that my guitar playing was not so good because my fingers are kind of stubby compared to a lot of players. But Johnny Hiland just took all of my excuses away. He is precise and is one of the few guitar players that I know of, who uses the whole scale, 9ths etc. where most stay in the natural and 7ths. I'm certainly no expert but I think blues sounds so good when it is played using everything that's available in that scale.
With all due respect...guitar players know that was technically beyond any of the popular blues greats. The only guys nowadays who would want to go head to head with him would guys like Brent Mason or Guthrie Trapp. Great player whose hero was Danny Gatton. That’s the top of the mountain and Johnny belongs up there.
To everyone saying he "can't play the blues", I have never once read or heard him say that he was a blues player... He's just a guitar player. You people who insist on players sticking to the same old parameters and defined styles really need to think more about being music fans and less about your perceived role of music critic. Johnny is a monster player. That should be enough. Enjoy what he's sharing and stop dumping on the fact that he's not copying every other "blues" player who does the same old boring 12 bar licks that we've been hearing since Riley King picked up Lucille.
Matthew amen . he's a monster guitarist. he can play an type of music. I would rather listen to to his chicken picked style incorporated into the blues. than most other blues players. and I have never heard him rip any other guitarist. very humble man. bottom line the guy just has a ton of fun playing!
he is so so so much soulful and effortless player .....nd flexible in all sorts of genres.....he does not repeat himself.....everytime he plays.....he simply smashes it.....this is Johny Hiland.....a real deal.....not a so called big name who gets big by commercial success not by musical sense & skills.
Got that goosebump factor. Fired up the Altec 1569A s and let it blow thru the JBL s. I think the neighbors dug it too. Electricity in the air. One of my favorite pickers now!
Johnny has some of the fastest fingers of any player around...combined with a natural ear for the fretboard. He is an effortless guitar player and a master of many styles. Seems like a great guy, too.
Johnny is one of the younger players that is really amazing. He is gifted at jazz fusion, country, chicken picken, blues, rock and his versatility shines on with his speed and vocabulary. I wish him the best and to have a long career and success.
Flawless! Saw him in London some years back at a guitar show, he was demoing his first PRS signature, I'd read about him previously, but I wasn't into the Nashville thing, but watching him play- we were both blown away, he's a true master of styles, great feel and awesome tone...
The lick at 1:35 and again at 3:14 and a lot of his other fast runs, both here and in other videos, reminds me a lot of Shawn Lane. I think he's definitely one of many influences in Johnny's playing. He even throws in the Eric Johnson hybrid picking lick from Cliffs of Dover here and there, like Shawn used to do.
Iknow he uses a boss delay pedal, which is his main pedal, and some distortion but his sound comes from his pickups, which you can now buy..I think they're called johnny blades. Hope that helps !
Master class right there. N/C. No contest. It's over folks. Here's.......Johnny. The dood was on absolute fire that night. It's funny but the tapping is so rudimentary by comparison that it's a real step down for him to use that technique.
this guy is so underrated .one of the best guitarists to walk the planet .
Greig Morrison i think the same
AMEN BROTHER 👍🙏
This guy has got so much soul! So good at blues that he made Eric Clapton play bass ;)
+tunoa johnson absolutely.........eric clapton gave up
completely underrated Johny Highland, shunned from top 40 radio and main stream media ...and it hasn't hurt him one bit..lol....One of the best today..
hahaha.....good one
I thought it was Tommy Chong with a haircut!
80s Clapton 😉
if only I had been there to watch and hear this... imagine goin' out for a drink.. enter this bar... and then .... this ...... this would be heaven on earth....
to me it sounds like Dannny Gatton and Gary Moore had a science project on the side that resulted in Johnny Hiland!!

Best guitar man alive on planet earth today! I could listen to him all day. No one should be this good...damn!
Johnny! Everything is right here. This is how to play the blues. The tone. The crescendos. The changes. Genius.
Man johny is a beast he deserves so much jore recognition for god sake
Spacious enough to allow his phrasing to be. Clearly enunciated and never loses the natural ebb and flow of the. Groove momentum
He knows how to utilize the timbre of every note on the guitar to it's fullest tone. He is gifted.
This guy is not a one trick pony, other videos of him playing other styles, just Amazing.

Frighteningly amazing great sound
Phew! Some chops Man!
Whoa…that is great playing
In the same league as Danny Gatton and Roy Buchanan (and other super-pickers) ...
and great rhythm section too.
His agent told me that Danny was his idol...and he had Bill Holloman who played with Danny in his band for a time.
he should be in the g3 with satriani if he hasn't been, he is of an invaluable musical wealth.
Dude's the Boss. First saw him in Nashville in 1998. Hope to see him again one fine day...
speechless, i play rock/ heavy rock guitar, but i would love to be able to play like johnny.
Johnny is one of the younger players that is really amazing. He is gifted at jazz fusion, country, chicken picken, blues, rock and his versatility shines on with his speed and vocabulary. I wish him the best and to have a long career and success.
