This was her third single in The Netherlands, after Wuthering Heights and The Man With The Child In His Eyes. Curious to what else was on her debut album, because the songs were so different, I bought it. I could not have done anything better. The small Kate Bushworld I was invited into with that purchase, appeared larger than life! 13 songs of great quality and an urge I had only experienced with the greatest of greatest: Pink Floyd, ELO, Supertramp, Led Zeppelin, Yes. Where did she come from? Although my English was still rather basic after two years of English lessons (I am Dutch and 14 years old at the time), I could sense the depths she explored, but did not get the full meaning of them. In fact it influenced me to study harder for my English lessons! So thank you miss Bush! From that point on I also used lyricsheets included in lp's to study their 'poetry' and that way enriched my English.
So the rolling of the ball applied here as well.
    Yes Justin, that bass..... ❤

One of two songs Kate performed on Saturday Night Live in 1978 (which I believe has been her only live appearance in the US). The other song was "The Man With the Child in His Eyes" with Paul Shaffer on piano.

Just a little non sequiter here: the video from her Hammersmmith Odeon concerts in 1980 have some delightful choreography on this song. In that concert, Kate does a lot of dancing with a wireless headset fashioned out of a wire clothes hanger. She is widely regarded as the first artist to perform using a wireless headset. Kate felt it was a necessity because her performances combined dance, mime, and stage magic along with the music. While Todd Rundgren was probably the first artist to tour using wireless microphones, Kate was apparently the first to adapt it to a headset. If you can find the video of her in those concerts, this song is a fun one to watch.

Back in the late 60s and early 70s, heavy was used to describe ideas and people who were important... weighty. It also could refer to bad guys (heavies).

Another (less famous) woman singer-songwriter has a very similar song about how the musicians she listened to affected her, and about “passing the baton,” so to speak: Happy Rhodes, “Feed the Fire.” There’s even a special “tribute version” that she did live on the radio where she references a couple of her own inspirations: David Bowie and Kate Bush.

Great track, love the almost reggae lilt to it. Heavy in the sixties and seventies meant something that was deep, or profound or difficult to bear. Here a still teenage Kate is seeking to open herself up to learning about the world, different cultures, ideas, religions, etc, and seizing the opportunity to embrace knowledge while she's still young.

Hi Justin. Dave from Somewhere In Between. One of my favourites from this album, which was a hit single in the UK, and love her TV performances of it, although it's difficult to watch them without remembering comedien Pamela Stephenson's parody. Check out Not The Nine O'Clock News - England, My Leotard.
P.S. my song ref Somewhere In Between is from Kate's later album Aerial.

One of my faves of her early work. So glad you got to it. Dervishes are religious practitioners of the Sufis, which is found in Eastern Euope, parts of Asia and parts of North Africa. Sufis reach into driving the body into a state of ecstasy. One of those ways is the whirling dancing. Theres Sufi music and other Sufi rituals performed to reach that pinnacle of euphoria to bring your self closer to God. Kate really is intrigued by ecstatic states of being. The song Lily is a great example. It's one of the qualities I adore about her music and storytelling.

Gurdjieff was an esoteric teacher from Prussia in the early 20th century. He is a great example of 'heavy'. Jesu is a reference to gnostic Christian teachings from the Greek cycle of scriptures. The name 'Jesus' was the later Romanized or Latin version. The Dervishes are of course the devotees of the mystical Sufi branch of Islam. How and why a 17 year old girl would be familiar with, or interested in any of this is baffling to me, Lol....but of course it is Kate....

  • @robertjewell9727

Gurdjieff was a philosopher who developed a school of thought called The Work dealing with self-observation and the extinguishment of egoism. Fripp was and is a big studier of this process.

Because this song was a big hit single, many UA-camrs have reacted to it. It is nice, however, to see a reaction which is purely about the music and lyrics. I find the promotional video and the dance routines more of a distraction than a help. Great review of a great pop song !

There's a way in which Dervishes would be "Turkish", yes, but "Ottoman" would be more like it. (The Ottoman Empire - Turkey, Crimea, Romania, Greece, most of the Balkans, Saudi, Syria, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Libya ... and some others). All over the Empire there would've been a certain proportion of "Dervishes". They're the same people referred to as "Sufi", today. They would spin round and round wearing wide skirts that would flatten out into a disk, in a kind of "prayer dance". (I think maybe they still do, but I don't think it's all Sufis that do it. Take all of the above with a fair-sized _Maybe_ , BTW.)
I think there were some Dervishes in India and Persia, too. Before the Ayatollah took over there was quite a lot of religious freedom in Iran/Persia. You had new cults popping up, there, for instance. There was something like the "church and state divide" they have in Saudi today, there. (Saudi has one family that does the governing, and another that does the religion, AFAIK.) The Shah left religion to the Descendants of Ali, and they left the governance to him. There were Shahs who hinted at being ready to convert to Catholicism in exchange for French help in times of crisis, even. (Maybe. Might have heard that all wrong, or read it all backward.)
There was "freedom of religion" but people like Jews and Christians were always a bit vulnerable / had no power. Clerics that went radical could pretty much do what they liked to people not in line with their dictats. When it came to religious matters, the descendants of Ali were a law unto themselves. (But that's just from one book I remember, where the author was a Victorian era Christian convert - by Americans, actually. Looks like the main missionary effort there was American.)
Anyway, nice to hear Heavy People again.

Justin, you’re my favorite reactor, but it’s a little frustrating that I see certain artists (like Kate Bush) being reacted to a lot in your channel while 99% of the stuff I request or mention seemingly gets ignored. I know you probably don’t get a ton of requests for the stuff I would like to see, so of course you have to give the people what they want.
