Manifest V3 sunsetting v2 does annoy me, but he's right about companion windows. Unlike regular pop-ups, they can't be used for spam ads. They are in the content area, they do not overlay other websites or any navigation button you'd need, and they don't bother you in anything you're doing. Rather than pop-up windows, they're pop-up sections. Taking youtube as an example, it would allow you to browse anywhere on youtube while the video is still playing. It is a premium feature but it isn't as smooth as it could be, as you can't move it around, and it doesn't really integrate back all that well when you go back to the video's page. Just, no. This is so ripe for abuse that it's not even funny. Let's play ads one after the other in a popup window that is either docked or follows an element around on your page (through multiple pages). Let's not add a way to close this. Let's have it play audio as well. I can see countless ways to abuse this, and very few use cases that can't already be kludged around. Are those hacks annoying? Yes. Are they imperfect? Yes. The alternative is to have a popup window playing audio and video ads as I navigate the site, and can't be dealt with unless I leave the site. Would developers do such a thing (floating ads that cannot be caught or destroyed)? Yes. For sites with important information, you'll now have a captive audience. Again, just no.
It only makes sense if they implement it like notifications, requiring the user to consent to enable them, and giving the user the ability to revoke permissions if a site is abusing them.
To all the haters: did you miss the part where this could be completely emulated today? Wonder if they’ll expose an API to enable an easy way to designate a region for drag positioning as well (a likely use case). Also, I wonder how it’ll handle reloads if it is unaffected by navigation. Sometimes persisting across reload makes a lot of sense.
